Abstract

Toxic masculinity is a harmful behavior shaped by complex social and cultural pressures, as illustrated in The Devil All the Time (2020), which presents an environment full of trauma and violence that shapes male identity. This study examines the depiction of toxic masculinity and its impact, using Terry A. Kupers as the primary framework, supported by a film analysis approach. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the data were selected through dialogue techniques focused on the main character, Arvin Russell. The results identified three main characteristics of toxic masculinity depicted in Arvin’s character: emotional suppression, aggression, and violence. Additionally, it is also found that there is an impact of toxic masculinity, emotional isolation, and loneliness as a defense mechanism. Thus, this study concludes that toxic masculinity illustrated in the movie operates as a socially destructive force and has psychological impacts that are harmful to both individuals and society. Abstract

This study aims to analyze linguistic phenomena in digital communication conducted by advertising agencies, particularly in their interactions with influencers as strategic partners. The research focuses on hybrid language styles, code-switching practices, and personalization strategies in shaping communication that is both effective and professional, yet friendly. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews involving 13 influencers and 3 agency representatives (Maleo, VML, and Kanan Kiri). The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify linguistic patterns and the pragmatic functions of commonly used phrases in digital interactions. The findings reveal that the language style adopted by advertising agencies reflects an adaptation to the digital communication landscape, where phrases like "done," "well noted," and "is it possible?" characterize a hybrid form that blends casual and formal tones. English expressions such as "thank you for reaching out" and "as per our discussion" serve to enhance the agency’s professional image, while Indonesian elements foster emotional closeness with communication partners. Moreover, hierarchical structures remain respected even within casual language use, as illustrated by phrases like “escalate to the superior”. Efficient and well-structured communication is key to ensuring smooth project execution and accelerating workflows. The study concludes that digital communication in advertising agencies serves not only as a message delivery tool but also as a strategic medium for building productive and harmonious professional relationships. These findings contribute to the development of corporate communication strategies grounded in pragmatic linguistics in the digital era. Abstract

Research on “Denotative and Connotative Meanings in The Hundred-Foot Journey Movie (Semantic Study)” aims to identify references and meanings, with a focus on denotative and connotative meanings. The objective of the research is to understand the constructed meanings of cultural differences using Geoffrey Leech's theory (1981) in a semantic study approach. Conversational sentence data was taken from the film The Hundred-Foot Journey. The descriptive-qualitative method consists of the production of texts from verbal sources, text analysis, and interpretation to analyze data in discourse analysis. The findings show that meaning in speech is not limited to simple denotative meanings, but often develops into connotative meanings that are rich in cultural, emotional, and social power relations. The denotative and connotative meanings identified provide an understanding of each object or concept, resulting in an awareness of cultural differences in the communication process, especially in the dynamic interpretation of language Keywords: Denotation, Connotation, Culture, Film

Abstract

This research is entitled “Shay Cormac’s Characterization in Assassin’s Creed Rogue Game.” In this study, the authors focus on the classification of the character of Shay Cormac at the beginning and at the end of the storyline. This study employs the theory of the Six Pillars of Human Character, as outlined by Josephson, to derive character classifications such as citizenship, responsibility, respect, caring, and trustworthiness. The research method used in this research uses the descriptive method, which involves collecting data and then observing aspects related to the problem under study. The data obtained is then processed and analyzed further based on the theory that has been studied to obtain a more detailed picture of the object. The findings show that Shay demonstrates responsibility in preventing further destruction, respect in evaluating the actions of different groups, and caring because of his concern for innocent lives, and citizenship to show his integrity. Overall, from this study, we can see that Shay is not a simple character but has many sides. Keywords: Characterization, Six Pillars of Character, Shay Cormac

Abstract

This study explores interpersonal metafunctions in Billie Eilish’s “Wildflower” using Systemic Functional Linguistics framework, focusing on MOOD and modality patterns. The research analyzes 34 clauses from official lyrics using descriptive qualitative method to understand how interpersonal meaning is constructed. Findings reveal declarative MOOD dominates (88.2%), followed by interrogative MOOD (11.8%), while imperative MOOD is absent. For modality, no modality appears most frequently (44.1%), followed by high modalization (23.5%). Results indicate Eilish uses declarative statements to share personal truths and create intimate connection with listeners, while interrogative moments reveal vulnerability. The prevalence of no modality establishes honest emotional facts, while high modalization provides certainty in uncertain situations. These linguistic choices demonstrate how contemporary artists construct authentic emotional connections through vulnerable yet respectful communication strategies. Abstract

This study aims to explore the symbolic meanings of black cats through Roland Barthes' semiotic framework, focusing on three levels of meaning: denotative, connotative, and mythological. Black cats have long served as cultural symbols associated with myth, mysticism, and diverse interpretations across Indonesian and Western societies. This research applies a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing direct observation and literature review for data collection. The findings reveal that visual elements such as black fur, eyes, and claws of cats carry layered meanings influenced by cultural values, ideologies, and community beliefs. The color black symbolizes darkness and death; cat eyes are associated with mystical realms; while cat claws are seen as omens or warnings. These symbols are shaped and interpreted through complex social and historical processes. The results highlight that even a simple object like a black cat can possess deep, culturally constructed meanings that require contextual understanding. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the power relations between humans and Fish-Men in the One Piece Arc Fish-Man Island. The conflict presented in this arc depicts social tensions caused by discrimination and inequality, which shape the personalities and attitudes of the characters. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a structural analysis approach to examine the intrinsic elements of characterization, combined with Michel Foucault’s theory of power relations to interpret the dynamics of domination and resistance between the two races. The findings reveal that the characterization of Fish-Man figures such as Hody Jones and Arlong represents collective trauma and hatred toward humans as a consequence of historical oppression. In contrast, the character Jinbe embodies reconciliation through wisdom and efforts to establish equality. The power relations between humans and Fish-Men demonstrate patterns of domination that oppress, but also open space for resistance and negotiation. Thus, the Fish-Man Island Arc does not merely portray physical battles but also serves as a symbolic representation of the struggle against discrimination and the pursuit of social justice. Abstract

This study examines the meaning and speech acts contained in The 1975's song "I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes)" from a pragmatics perspective. The goal is to explain how Searle's (1969) speech act theory and Grice's (1975) cooperative principle operate within the lyrics to create emotional messages and hidden meanings. This study employed qualitative, non-numerical research methods. Specifically, the analysis focused on utterances in the song that directly express emotion (expressive speech acts) and utterances that reveal the speaker's thoughts or beliefs (representative speech acts). Key findings include the following: First, expressive speech acts were used to express emotions such as sadness, emotional exhaustion, and internal conflict. In contrast, representative speech acts conveyed the lyricist's personal beliefs and profound reflections. The study also found that lyricists deliberately violate the rules of language, such as failing to state the truth (violating the maxim of quality) or omitting details (violating the maxim of quantity), to create deeper, more metaphorical meanings. Simply put, the song conveys emotions through metaphors and ambiguity rather than literal words. Such strategies allow listeners to fill in the gaps in the lyrics themselves, deepening their empathy. Therefore, pragmatic analysis goes beyond simply understanding word meaning and significantly contributes to understanding how contemporary popular music constructs and conveys emotions. Ultimately, this study demonstrates the utility of pragmatics in interpreting song lyrics, shedding new light on the relationship between language, emotions, and popular music.
