Abstract

Background: Papillon-Lefèvre Syndrome (PLS) is a very rare genetic disorder (autosomal recessive) that usually affects infants between the ages of one and five years. PLS is characterized by palmar-plantar hyperkeratosis and premature loss of primary and permanent teeth with extensive, severe, and rapid destruction of the alveolar bone, leading to the premature loss of both teeth. Objective: To report on the management of PLS patients. Case: A 9-year-old girl and a 2.5-year-old boy from Nganjukto General Hospital, Pediatric Dentistry Division, RSGM Airlangga University with the main complaints of upper left tooth pain, rocking, difficulty eating, erythematous hyperkeratosis hands and feet, periodontal inflammation, mobility. bad teeth. Case Management: Nine-year-old girl: Teeth #26 and #46 could not be retained and extracted due to buccoversion and severe mobility. Periodontal supportive therapy was periodontal debridement, scaling and root planing and oral hygiene counseling with 0.20% chlorhexidine gluconate. Two-and-a-half-year-old boy: Too young, he is observed every 3 months. It is recommended to take vitamin B complex in appropriate doses and fruit juice as an additional supplement. Conclusion: Intensive periodontal treatment and administration of antibiotics only delays the progression of periodontal disease and cannot be used to prevent primary and permanent teeth. Extensive and repeated prosthodontic treatment is required to provide functional teeth to children during their period of jaw growth.

Abstract

Background: The incidence of HIV/AIDS has increased significantly over the last decade, both globally and in Indonesia. In this situation, the patient has severe impairment in their cellular immunity, making them susceptible to various kinds of opportunistic infections. Oral candidiasis is the most common oral lesion related to HIV/AIDS. Oral candidiasis in people living with HIV (PLHIV) needs to be treated because it can evolve into a systemic infection through the lymphatic system that attacks vital organs. Objective: To know the management of oral candidiasis in PLHIV. Methods: A web-based search was performed via the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar database. Original research and case reports (2018–2023) published in the English language were included to appraise various topics. The number of articles included in the review amounted to 9 articles. Literature Study: Management of patients with oral candidiasis in PLHIV by eliminating predisposing factors, improving oral hygiene, and administering antifungal drugs such as topical agents and/or systemic triazoles. Discussion: In cases of oral candidiasis associated with immunodeficient individuals, topical agents may not be effective in such cases, hence triazole systemic administration is necessary. Oral candidiasis in PLHIV is less responsive to polyene antifungal drugs (nystatin and amphotericin B). Conclusions: Management of oral candidiasis in PLHIV sufferers are eliminating predisposing factors, Improving oral hygiene and stopping habits that can worsen the patient's oral hygiene, administration fluconazole antifungal drugs, giving chlorhexidine gluconate mouthwash, and antiretroviral (ARV) treatment.

Abstract

Background: The Ministry of Health’s Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) in 2018 showed that the largest proportion of dental and oral problem is among the age group of 5-9 years (67.3%) where only 14.6% have received treatment by dental professionals. This is due to a lack of knowledge about maintaining oral health in children, and one of the health efforts to reduce dental and oral problems is to provide Dental Health Education (DHE). Generally, DHE activities are carried out face to face and practiced together in the field. The implementation during the Covid-19 pandemic requires a strategy that considers health and security aspects to prevent the transmission of the virus. Objectives: This research aims to determine the difference in children's knowledge level about dental and oral health before and after DHE with educational video media. Methods: This is an experimental analytic research with a cross-sectional study design. It was conducted at the Alamy Integrated Islamic Elementary School in Subang, where third-grade students completed the pre-test before watching the educational video, and post-test after watching video. Results: The average value of children's dental and oral health knowledge before and after being treated was 40.0 and 42.1, respectively. Furthermore, the Wilcoxon test showed a significant effect on the provision of DHE to children's knowledge about oral health. Conclusion: The provision of DHE significantly affects children's knowledge conveyed through educational videos.
