Abstract

Stakeholders in education must understand the relationship between students' mathematical performance and their mathematical skills in order to develop a more effective mathematics curriculum and education. It is on this basis that this study examined mathematical skills as a predictor of students’ performance in secondary school mathematics in Ogun State, Nigeria. The survey design used for this study was descriptive. The population of this study consisted of all Senior Secondary School Two (SSS2) students in Ogun State. Four hundred eighty (480) secondary school students from the SSS2 class comprised the study sample. In this study, simple random and purposeful sampling methods were used. Purposive sampling technique was used to select twelve (12) schools among secondary schools in Ogun State, while the simple random sampling technique was used to select forty (40) respondents from each school. For this study, two research questions were used. The instruments used for data collection are: Mathematics Performance Test (r = 0.762); Numerical Skills Test (r = 0.86); Spatial Reasoning Test (r = 0.78); and Problem-solving Style Questionnaire (r = 0.82). The results showed a significant positive relationship between mathematical skills and students’ performance in mathematics. The correlation of independent variables in relation to the performance of students in mathematics is as follows: Numerical skills (r=0.122,p<0.05); Spatial skills (r=0.182, p<0.05); and Problem-solving skills (r=0.139,p<0.05) respectively. It was further revealed that mathematical skills relatively contributed to students’ academic performance in mathematics. It was then concluded that mathematical skills are an important factor that enhances students’ performance in mathematics.

Abstract

Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students' academic success. However, at Mid-West University (MU) in the Humanities and Social Sciences, irregular attendance among students has been observed. The percentage of students who attend more than 80% of the classes held is zero for undergraduates and only 0.5% for graduates. It is very important to disclose the underlying causes of it. There is no prior research exploring attendance barriers in the context of HSS, MU. Similarly, current institutional policies have not adequately addressed the root causes of student absenteeism. Thus, there is both an empirical and policy research gap. The specific objective of the study is to identify the key barriers that prevent students from attending classes regularly in HSS, MU. The research site for the investigation is the Surkhet district, Karnali Province, based on the programs of HSS and MU. This study has employed a descriptive research design. In-depth interviews and a survey (closed-ended) are the data collection tools. The sample size of the survey is determined based on [ ]  formula where the margin of error is 0.05, in which the sample size (n) is 63. Barriers to students' regular attendance in the Humanities and Social Sciences at MU include socio-economic, institutional, academic, and personal factors. This study has both policy and pedagogical implications, suggesting new structural changes and teaching and learning approaches that could be introduced.

Abstract

Learner disengagement remains a pressing concern in Araling Panlipunan (Social Studies) classes, where the subject is often viewed as monotonous and detached from students' interests. This action research investigated the potential of gamification as an innovative approach to enhance learners' engagement in Araling Panlipunan. Conducted during the 2024–2025 school year, the study involved a selected Grade 10 class consisting of forty (40) learners at San Rafael National High School in Tigaon, Camarines Sur, Philippines. A single-group research design was employed, and purposive sampling was used to select participants from a section with relatively low classroom engagement and academic performance. A five-week intervention was implemented, integrating game-based elements such as point systems, leaderboards, and reward mechanisms into Araling Panlipunan lessons. Learner engagement was tracked through structured scoring for participation and the quality of responses, supported by weekly leaderboards that fostered healthy competition. The pre-intervention results revealed a Mean Percentage Score (MPS) of 44.44% in engagement-related indicators, classified as "Did Not Meet Expectations." Post-intervention assessments significantly rose to 86.88%, categorized as "Very Satisfactory." The post-intervention results showed a statistically significant improvement (p < 0.001), confirming the effectiveness of gamification in enhancing engagement in Araling Panlipunan. Based on the findings, it is strongly recommended that educators integrate gamified strategies into classroom discussions to cultivate a more engaging learning environment.

Abstract

Citation metrics play a crucial role in evaluating the impact and significance of scientific publications within the research community. Among the widely recognised indicators are the journal impact factor and the h-index, the latter often used to evaluate and rank academic conferences. Despite the prominence of these metrics, many scholars remain unfamiliar with a range of alternative measures available for assessing scholarly output. This review examines various citation-based metrics employed to assess scientific publications. Although some of these metrics offer distinct advantages, they have not yet been widely adopted by journals, funding bodies, or researchers. This review aims to provide a detailed overview of lesser-known citation indicators and to support researchers in making more informed evaluations of academic influence and research quality.

Abstract

The increasing demand for education services in Indonesia has significantly influenced the growth of private tutoring businesses. PT Kanaka Belajar is a company that provides private tutoring services, yet it continues to face challenges related to revenue uncertainty and fluctuating student enrollment, which can affect financial management and increase the risk of business bankruptcy. Therefore, a reliable and accurate revenue prediction system is necessary at each level of education to estimate income for the coming year. The Monte Carlo method is a computational algorithm that uses repeated random sampling to obtain numerical results. This study applied the Monte Carlo method to forecast revenue based on historical data from 2021 to 2023. This research aims to develop a web-based revenue prediction system for educational services at different levels by implementing the Monte Carlo simulation. The results demonstrated that the model provided high prediction accuracy for private tutoring income at the elementary school level in 2023, with an MAPE value of 1.57%. The system predicted 314 tutoring sessions, while the data showed 319 sessions, resulting in a minimal difference of 5 sessions. These findings suggest that the Monte Carlo method effectively forecasts educational service revenue, where smaller percentage error values indicate higher accuracy, while larger errors suggest lower forecast reliability.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of tax incentives—specifically those related to Tax on Income (ToI) exemptions—and minimum wage dynamics on foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows in Cambodia, with a focus on the role of Qualified Investment Projects (QIPs). Using descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, Tukey’s post hoc test, and multiple regression analysis, the research reveals significant variability in FDI inflows. The results strongly support Hypothesis 1, confirming that tax exemptions (5%, 10%, or 15%) are positively associated with higher FDI, although benefits diminish beyond a 5% exemption. Contrary to Hypothesis 2, a strong positive correlation (r = 0.950, p < 0.001) was found between the minimum wage and FDI, suggesting that rising wages may reflect economic stability and labor quality, thereby encouraging investment. Regression analysis (R² = 0.931, p < 0.001) reveals that both tax exemptions and minimum wage are positively related to FDI; however, only minimum wage demonstrates individual statistical significance (B = 11.586, p = 0.002). These findings offer partial support for Hypothesis 3, indicating that while tax incentives are relevant, wage levels play a more influential role in attracting FDI. The study concludes that a combination of higher minimum wages and generous tax exemptions yields the highest predicted FDI inflows, emphasizing the need for balanced economic policy.

Abstract

The current study aims to examine the influence of social factors on the self-efficacy and job performance of Cambodian high school teachers, with a particular emphasis on the differences between gender and age groups. To achieve this, a quantitative descriptive method and a causal-comparative analysis were used with data obtained from 639 high school teachers working in four provinces in Cambodia. Specifically, four important social aspects were investigated: the impact of colleagues, education policy, the income of teachers, and the socio-economic background of teachers. The findings indicate that all social determinants have a considerable impact on the self-efficacy and performance of teachers, with salary making the most important contribution. However, there were no statistically significant differences in teachers' perceptions across gender and age groups. This means that all the teachers need additional payments as a priority. Consequently, these findings bring to light the general significance of social effects on teachers' performance and emphasize the necessity of making systemic adjustments in teacher compensation, policy implementation, and support mechanisms. In brief, theoretical and practical implications for educational development in Cambodia are offered, contributing to the expanding body of literature on teachers’ living standards. Finally, future studies should employ a mixed-methods approach better to understand the same or different regions in the country.

Abstract

This study investigates the evolving practice of the Mangalehen Tuor tradition in Mandailing wedding ceremonies, particularly in Damuli Pekan Village, and its potential as a source of contextual sociology learning. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis involving traditional leaders and indigenous Mandailing community members. Data were analyzed through reduction stages, presentation, verification, and conclusion. The findings reveal significant transformations in the tradition, particularly in the quantity and types of tuor offered, and in the dynamics of the negotiation process. Historically grounded in customary values and kinship relations, the Mangalehen Tuor tradition has shifted toward more pragmatic considerations influenced by economic factors and modern lifestyles. These shifts reflect broader processes of social change, modernization, and the influence of globalization on local cultural practices. This transformation offers valuable insights for sociological inquiry, particularly regarding adapting traditions in response to contemporary societal pressures. As such, the case of Mangalehen Tuor provides a relevant and culturally rich resource for sociology education, enabling students to examine the interplay between tradition and modernity critically. This case study contributes to a deeper understanding of socio-cultural transformation and its pedagogical implications for contextualizing sociology education. It also underscores the importance of preserving local wisdom amid global influences, offering a pathway for younger generations to engage with and learn from their cultural heritage.

Abstract

Children's education is the main responsibility of parents as the initial foundation for shaping children's character and intelligence. This study analyzes parents’ perceptions and preferences in selecting schools for elementary-age children. The research employed a quantitative descriptive approach using a survey method involving 112 parents of elementary school-aged children. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and cross-tabulation with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings indicate that parental decisions are influenced by their perceptions, which are shaped by factors such as educational background, personal experience, and income. In contrast, preferences tend toward factors like school facilities, safety, a conducive learning environment, technology integration, religious education, leadership, academic performance, and location. The characteristics of the respondents also affect their school selection behavior. These results help explain the declining interest in public schools in certain areas. This study contributes to a better understanding of how parental decision-making may inform educational stakeholders in developing policies and school programs that align with family expectations and student needs.

Abstract

Instructional media serve a pivotal function in facilitating the achievement of learning objectives. The integration of interactive learning media represents a significant innovation within the educational landscape, particularly in fostering enhanced learning motivation, encouraging students to engage more actively in the learning process. This study examines how interactive media influence fifth-grade students' learning motivation at SDN 9 Ampenan. Employing a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method, the research utilized a nonequivalent control group design. The population consisted of all fifth-grade students, with the sample comprising class Va (31 students) as the experimental group and class Vc (29 students) as the control group. Data were collected using a structured student motivation questionnaire. The results, analyzed using an independent sample t-test, revealed a calculated t-value of 8.061, which exceeds the critical t-value of 1.988 at a 5% significance level (α = 0.025), with a p-value of 0.001 < 0.05, indicating statistical significance. These findings suggest that the application of interactive media exerts a significant positive effect on the learning motivation of fifth-grade students at SDN 9 Ampenan.
