Abstract

This research conducted to probe the outcome of CSR on reading comprehension across reading motivation. Moreover, this research aims to investigate the modification concerning the students taught with CSR and the students taught with conventional strategy on reading comprehension. Nonetheless, the variance between the students with intrinsic reading motivation and extrinsic reading motivation on reading comprehension, and the interaction within CSR and students reading motivation on reading comprehension. This research used quasi-experimental research.  Furthermore, the sample of this research was two classes of seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 12 Malang. However, the instrument that used in this research was posttest and questionnaire, and examined by SPSS Version 20. The result revealed that the students taught by using CSR have higher score than the conventional strategy. CSR was effective students’ reading comprehension. The outcomes point out that students’ reading motivation does not affect to CSR on reading comprehension. In contrast, it has no interaction between CSR and the reading motivation.

Abstract

With the growth of the technology, this study is aimed to develop a supplementary media in the form of interactive media that can help students in improving their reading comprehension skill of “Recount:Historical text” and produce a guideline to help the students using the media.  This research adapts two models of research and development from Latief (2017) and ADDIE by Taylor (2004). The final product is in the form of interactive media that can be played in android devices and PC/laptop. The media was the result of need analysis conducted by the researcher. The media was assesed by the expert using a questionnaire and tried out to the students. Then being analysed using SPSS. The result of the questionnaires by the expert for the media was 94%. Meanwhile, in mean pretest and  mean posttest of the try out, there is a difference in the amount of 30,55 which that mean posttest is bigger than mean pretests.. It can be concluded that there is significance difference in students’ reading comprehension, before and after they use the interactive media. The above explanation strengthens that the interactive media give a positive attribute in the process of learning.

Abstract

Reading is being one of the important activities in order to obtain knowledge because there are a lot of information that can be acquaired through written media and can add the learners’ vocabulary. The purpose of this research are (1) to find the teacher’s strategies in teaching reading and (2) to find the students’ interest factors in learning reading. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative method. Through this method, the researcher analyzed the strategies that used by the teacher in teaching and the interest factors of the students in learning reading in class IX at SMPN 5 Camplong. The techniques used in this research to collecting data were observation, questionaire, and interview. The result of this research showed that in teaching reading the teacher used some strategies, there are: (1) 3 phase technique, (2) scaffolding, and (3) think aloud. While the students’ interest factors are caused by: (1) students’ previous experience, (2) teacher values, (3) understandable subject.

Abstract

Grammar is considered as basic foundation in learning English and becomes one of the most pivotal language elements. Task-based instruction (TBI) is a method in English teaching dealing with grammar teaching through communicative use of language. This study attempted to examine the effect of applying TBI on students’ grammar competence. This study utilized pre-experimental with one group pre-test and post-test design applied in basic program of Kampung Inggris LC. This study was carried out in five meetings namely: (1) conducting a pre-test in the first meeting; (2) giving treatments in the second, third, and fourth meetings; and (3) giving a post-test in the last meeting. The data were gathered by utilizing multiple choice grammar test, and the data analysis utilized paired sample t-test formula. The result denoted a significant distinction between pre-test and post-test with value (t= 0.000 < p=0.05). Additionally, The mean scores of the students comprised 58.82 for the pre-test and 75.82 for the postest. Therefore, TBI is effective in teaching grammar competence.

Abstract

The study was aimed to measure the effectiveness of realia in teaching writing descriptive paragraph at junior high school students. The design employed was pre- experimental. The subject was one of the class of eight grade at SMPN 2 Malang. The samples were 32 students of this study. The data was collected from pretest and posttest score. During six meetings for treatments and two meetings for pretest and posttest. The students were given writing test using writing test. The data was investigated using t-test of IBM SPSS 20. The data were analyzed by comparing the mean of students’ scores of pretest and posttest. Based on the statistical analysis, it could be comprehended from the result of mean score of posttest of students is 75.31 and the mean score of pretest 49.06. Then, the t-test (20.35) was higher than t critical value (2.04) at a level of significance 0.05. Thus, it can be established that who were taught by using realia had a enhanced performance in learning writing especially on descriptive paragraph.Keywords: effectiveness of realia, writing descriptive paragraph

Abstract

As the fundamental sources of language learning, yet some researchers found that many English textbook did not match to the students’ need, while good English textbook does not only emphasize the language acquisition but also provide and introduce cultural meaning to the students (Tomlinson, Swain, and Kramsch in Toledo-Sandoval, 2020). The use of local culture in language material improved students’ cultural awareness and motivate them to intercultural interaction. Thus, Indonesian English language teaching material should offer them real life and contextualized communication. The local cultural values refer to the 83 values within Pancasila and daily life, and Some character of textbook brings into line with philosophy base of Permendikbud No 36 year 2018, that broke down into 29 aspect. The method was qualitative descriptive content analysis approach. The data derived from the locally produced ELT textbook of senior high school grade X, XI, XII of senior high school published by Kemendikbud by used 8 procedure to conduct the study, then crosscheck the data, discuss and consult to the expert and advisor repeatedly. From that method found out that there are 30 variety for grade X, 31 variety for grade XI, and 33 variety for grade XII of local cultural values. Some activities given engage students’ critical thinking and evolve psychomotorand affective competencies and based on nowadays situation whereas some main materials in some chapters are not contextualized. Thus, it is a necessity to build the quality of this book, by evaluate each chapter and consider the local cultural values needed on it and mentioned in curriculum.

Abstract

Reading is one of the basic in English skills, just as important as writing, speaking, and listening. Besides, reading is closely related with other subject. There are many types in reading, one of them is narrative text. Narrative text is taught to the 2nd grade students of Junior High School. Students need some method in teaching narrative text that can help them to learn easier, one of the method that can be applied in teaching narrative text is Think Pair Share (TPS).  TPS is categorized as cooperative learning that demand students to share their ideas to their pair. The students worked in pair or in small group discussion to discuss the topic given and share each other. The objective of the research to know the effectiveness of Think Pair Share (TPS) method on students reading achievement.  The research design of this study is experimental research. The researcher apply quasi experimental. The subject of the research was second class students of MTs Mamba’us Sholihin Suci Manyar Gresik Tehnique of data collection is test, pre-test, treatment, and pos-test. Meanwhile, tehnique of data analysis , the researcher used IBM SPSS statistic 20 for windows. The result of the research showed that the significant value of students test both experimental group and control group was 0.00. It was lower than <0.05 as level of significant which meant that students who were taught by Think Pair Share methods get higher score of reading comprehension than the students who were taught by conventional method with the significant value of 0.00<0.05. So, this research showed that Think Pair Share method affect significantly on students’ reading comprehension of 2nd grade students of MTs Mamba’us Sholihin Suci ManyarGresik.  The result of this research, conclude that students who are taught by Think Pair Share method got higher score on their students reading comprehension.

Abstract

ABSTRACTCorona virus was first discovered in Wuhan, China, in 2019. This virus is spreading very quickly to the various countries of the world, and to make all the elements of life find obstacles in social mobility, economy and education. Therefore, WHO then took a stand to declare the spread of this virus to be a pandemic for entire countries. In the context of education in Indonesia, the government has issued various policies to tackle the spread of this virus by closing all formal educational institutions. The offer given by the government from this closure is an online learning method during the corona virus pandemic. The focus of this researvh is to investigate how the online learning process during a pandemic, how the influence of teachers on students when learning onlineThe researcher of this study is conducting by using qualitative descriptive research. The research belongs to descriptive qualitative design because it is intended to find out how is teacher’s perception of online English learning in the Covid-19 pandemic at secondary school. To collect the data, the researcher used online interview. The subjects of the study were 5 teachers who teaches at the secondary schools. They have been teaching English for 2-5 years and the participants was chosen because during this pandemic all teachers are teaching online.The results showed of teacher interviews that all respondents give good and bad lived experiences about teaching online learning. They claim that they can improve their learning system and get new experiences from the media used in online learning. On the other hand, the teacher also gave the perception that online learning has obstacles, there are bad networks, inadequate facilities, inadequate quality of mobile phones, minimalist quotas and applications used in online learning. However, teachers must continue to apply online learning or distance learning in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. For future researchers who wish to conduct similar study can use this research as a reference which is not only focuses on the teachers' lived experience and perceptions but also student perceptions with different participants.Keywords: Online Learning, COVID-19, English Language Teaching

Abstract

AbstractThe research was conduct to measure the effect of listning while reading to promote students  reading fluency. Quasi-experimental applied in this study and the sample was all second grade students of senior high school 1 JANAPRIA in academic years 2018/2019. The sample this study was two classes of second grade students of senior high school JANAPRIA. Class XI IPS II was the experimental group and class XI IPS I was the control group. the result of Independent T-test computation of  post-test showed that Tobt for reading comprehension was (t=8.958) was the same with Tcrit was (t=8.958) and for reading rate Tobt was (t=13.739) and was the same with Tcrit was (t=13.739)and the value significance for reading comprehension and rate were .000 hence, due to the sig (2-tailed) .000<.0.05 means that there were significantly different between the post-test scores of experimental group and control group after treatment. Hence, it can be concluded that the level of significant of LWR and conventional method are significantly different. Overall, the students who are taught using listening while reading had better on reading fluency than those who are not.Key words: Reading Fluency, Listening while Reading (LWR), Narrative text.

Abstract

The research aims to: 1) explore the description of perception of English teachers in SMAN 1 Karangrejo on the professional development, 2) describe the English teachers ‟perception on their professionalism after taking professional development, and  3) describe English teachers ‟professionalism after taking professional development.The research was conducted in SMAN 1  Karangrejo Tulungagung. The subject of this reserach are three English teachers at the school. The research uses qualitative method research in the form of case study. The researcher used interview, observation, and document analysis as the strategy for collecting data.The results are: 1)  all the three teachers in this research had been taking professional development before. They all agreed to the idea that professional development was an ongoing process to teach in the classroom according to the lesson plan, 2) conducting professional development supplied a lot of advantages for the three teachers. They thought that professional development brought some improvements in teachers’ professionalism. They were able to develop students’ thinking and communication skill, to manage the class, and to enrich teaching techniques, and 3) the teachers acknowledged that conducting professional development gave massive benefits for them, especially in improving their qualities as good English teachers. Keywords: professional development, perception
