Abstract

The researcher used a Classroom Action Research (CAR). This classroom action research was done at class X Sciences SMA sunan kalijogo jabung. Subject in this research was 25 students’. The instrument used to collect the data was observation checklist and test. The research consisted two cycles where each cycle concerned of three meetings. The researcher findings indicated that the use of Sequence signal words in writing narrative text was able to improve the students’ writing skill based on the three aspects. Equally important, the successful indicators which needed to be reached by the students significantly increased. From the pre-cycle test, there were 6 students successful and the students who fail. But, when the first cycle finished, the students who fail significantly decreased to 10 students only. It meant that, successful indicators increased three times after the researcher did it. Keywords: Sequence Signal Words, Writing, Narrative.

Abstract

This study is intended to find out whether self-regulate and self-concept in learning correlate with student’s reading achievement. The researcher used 57 students of MTs. Khairuddin Gondanglegi, Malang as the subject. The instrument of this research used questionnaire of self-regulate and self-concept in learning and reading test. The design of this research is quantitative research. The researcher used correlation research with multiple regression analysis to analyze this data. The finding of the research is self-regulate and self-concept in learning has no significant correlation on student’s reading achievement. The recommendation for further researchers is the result of this research can be used by the further researchers as a consideration to conduct further research in different aspects such as English skill, research areas, and also research design.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to measure the effectiveness of the THIEVES strategy on the reading comprehension achievement of students at Junior High School seventh grade students. This research was done in five meetings. One meeting for pretest, three meetings for treatment, and one more for posttest. In this study, researcher used quantitative methods with pre-experimental research design in which this study was only conducted in one research class. The subjects was 20 students taken from the seventh grade of Private Junior High School in East Java, Indonesia. This study was conducted during the Covid 19 pandemic so it was conducted online. Face-to-face learning in this study was conducted online using zoom and WhatsApp. In data collection, by presenting a multiple choice test consisting of 20 items for each test, the researcher performed a pre-test and posttest. The data was analyzed using SPSSS to calculate paired sample t-test.The results of statistical calculations obtained the mean score of pre-test 55.50 and 68.25 for the post-test. The t value 12.074. Based on the "Paired Sample Test" the sig. is (2-tailed) 0,000 < 0.05. So these can be stated that there is a difference mean score between the results of the pretest and posttest which means that there is the positive effect of the use of the THIEVES strategy on students' reading comprehension at seventh grade of Private Junior High School in East Java, Indonesia.

Abstract

zainularief1982@gmail.com  ABSTRACT The aim of this analysis was to investigate the form of remedial guidance a teacher requires for the writing of students. Twelve students from ten levels of state higher secondary school were studied according to certain criteria. The study employed a qualitative approach. The data sources collected in this analysis included written corrective feedback from the instructor on the development of students in class, concentrating on three types of mistake: the subject-verb error, choice of words, and sentence form in the descriptive text of the students. Such results have been analyzed and used the corrective feedback theoretical frameworks (2009) of Ellis, which include: direct feedback, indirect corrective feedback and metalinguistic corrective feedback, by analysis and interpretation of the teacher's written corrective feedback. The results of the study show the type of corrective to correct the descriptive writing of students used by the state high school teacher. Specific revisions are the form of corrections mainly used by teachers when reviewing their students ' grammar mistakes.. Abstract

The teaching strategies have a significant impact on the students' understanding in a process of learning. This study aimed to investigate the teachers’ strategies and problems faced by the English teachers in applying the strategy especially in teaching English speaking skills at SMP Negeri 12 Malang. The study involved three English teachers as participants of the study. This research design was qualitative research of case study. Based on the end of the result, it was discovered that there were some strategies that the English teachers used in teaching English speaking skills. The strategies that the English teachers used are the active learning method which combines with role-play strategy and the expository learning method which combine it with the drilling strategy. Besides those strategies, the teachers also have another technique to solve any problems in conducted speaking class such as lack of vocabulary, lack of confidence in speaking English and pronunciation problem. To overcome this issue, each of the English teachers has different techniques in solving this problem.

Abstract

EFL students should have vocabulary mastery as basic unit to  support the understanding of the English learning process. This study is focused on several aims Those are to find out the features of vocabulary learning strategies, to find the most strategy which is used by efl learners, and to know the least common vocabulary learning strategy which is made by EFL  Darussalam Islamic Institute. The study was carried out to 61 students as samples to collecting data.  The majority of the respondent consist of 53 female respondents and 8 male respondents. The data collection involved observation, questionnaire, and interview instruments. Afterward, main instrument is a set of questionnaires which was adapted on Schmitt‘s (1997) taxonomy; determination strategy (DET), social strategy (SOC), memory strategy (MEM), cognitive strategy (COG), and metacoginitive strategy (MET). The 33 questions are adapted. The overall implication of vocabulary learning strategies indicated that the most strategy applied is a cognitive strategy which is preferably used strategy by EFL learners with the highest total average score among others 3.27. And the least vocabulary learning strategy used is social strategies with the lowest total average scores 2.81 And the features shown by the respondents are they tend to use a mechanical means. Keywords: “Language Learning Strategy (LLS)”, “Vocabulary learning strategies (VLSs)”, “EFL students”.

Abstract

Indonesian government seriously takes the issue of the teacher education graduates who are considered not to have an established ability to become professional teacher in school, even resulting in disagreement with the implementation of the program. This further calls for a more thorough investigation of the inherent legitimacy of new teachers in Indonesia, as well as their quality. The objective of this study was to reveal pre-service teachers' perceptions of their own competency and readiness to teach. This study employed a survey research design involving 67 undergraduate students of university in Lamongan. The result of this research showed that p value (.258) is greater than ɑ (.05), sugeesting that there was no correlation between pre-service teachers’ perception toward their competence and readiness for teaching profession. Nevertheless, on their perceptions, the pre-service teachers perceived their competence and their readiness were positively in good category and ready for teaching profession. By realizing and considering the aspects for the teaching profession, they feel more confident and ready to face the real environment of teaching as their profession.Keywords: pre-service teachers, perception, competence, readiness

Abstract

Strategy is the way how the teacher achieves the goal based on the objective of teaching or depend on the class and students’ need. English department whose science is secular and non religious must deal with the vision and mission of IAIN Madura which is religious and competitive. The researchers uses basic qualitative studies. The aim of this study is to identify the teaching strategies and how the English teachers of IAIN Madura integrate the Islamic value into their teaching. Teacher 1 used brainstorming in teaching English. Teacher 2 used demonstration or games in teaching English. Teacher 3 case-based small group discussion strategy in teaching English, while teacher 4 usually used case-based small group discussion strategy. Holistic integration was done by teacher 2who used the text of Islam in teaching reading and teacher 3 also used the Islamic audio in teaching listening. While teacher 1 puts the Islamic values in the evaluation. But the teacher 4 did not put Islamic values in the material. The specific integration was done by teacher 1, 2, 3 and 4. They always try to exemplify with a good attitudes and moral values as shown when the teacher always implement honesty, good attitude, patience, and others in teaching learning process. The researcher found that all teachers apply curriculum approach, namely context-fictional approach, the lecturers replace greeting with Assalamualaikum and pray or say Basmalah before and at the end of the teaching and learning.

Abstract

In a line with the development of technology, many teachers use flipped instruction model as their model to teach in the classroom, especially in reading class. Flipped instruction model is an inverse learning method of the traditional method in which students are usually given material by the teacher in class, and then the assignment will be done at home. Hence, this research aimed to determine the effectiveness of flipped instructions model on students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text. Quantitative research was the type of research with the Experiment method. The design is pre-experimental that utilizes one group pre-test and post-test without a control group. There were two variables in this research: independent and dependent variables, where the independent variable is flipped instruction model and the dependent variable is the students’ reading skills. The participants in this research were 33 students from SMP NEGERI 1 LANDONGI, consisting of 12 males and 21 females. The pretest was given to measure students’ prior reading skills before applying treatment. After the treatment, the students are given a test as a post-test. A total of 20 multiple-choice questions were included in the pre-test and post-test. SPSS 16.0 for Windows was used to analyze the data and hypothesis testing (paired-sample T-test). The value of sig. (2 tailed) is 0.000. The T-test is lower than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05).According to the result, the researcher interprets that using Flipped instructions model was effective to teach reading comprehension, especially in descriptive text.

Abstract

English textbook especially senior high school must consist of qualified English reading tasks in order to boost students’ english skills by being trained with reading and vocabulary mastery at once. This drives the researcher to do a qualitative with one research questions to fiugure out; “how is Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in essay reading exercises distributed in English SMK/ MAK textbook for X, XI, and XII grades?”. The researcher selected senior high school English textbook for X, XI, and XII grades by BUMI AKSARA. Analysis steps were sequentially completed started from textbook observation, question selection, data reduction, and finally analyzing the HOTS data collected. From the data analysis, there obtained 9% with 6 HOTS reading essay questions (C4:2, C5:4) in English textbook of X grade, 6% with 7 HOTS reading essay questions (C4:5, C5:2) in English textbook of XI grade, and 10% with 12 HOTS reading essay questions (C5:12) in English textbook of XII grade. These factual results recommend all English teachers to be selective in utilizing English textbook due to improving students’ critical thoughts. Also, the researcher suggests the further researcher to investigate HOTS effects on students’ achievement.Keywords:  Reading, Essay Task, HOTS
