Abstract

Abstract: This study is to describe how Online Group Discussion can improve the seventh-grade students` writing skill in descriptive text. This study was a Classroom Action Research (CAR) in two cycles process starting from making lesson plan, implementation, observation, and reflection. The quantitative data were obtained from the test and questionnaire; the qualitative data ware obtained from observation of the teaching and learning process, the students’ answers, and the researcher’s field-notes. After the implementation of the plan in cycle 2, the criteria of success were fulfilled. The mean score is 77.2 better than first test, 75.8. it means that the writing descriptive text of the students in the seventh grade students at SMPN 15 Malang improve. Based on these results, it is recommended that teachers apply online group discussion in teaching descriptive text. Key words: Writing Skill, Descriptive Text, Online Group Discussion

Abstract

This research is goaled at measuring the effectiveness of digital comics (DC) in teaching of writing recount texts at eighth of SMPN 2 Krian Sidoarjo. A complex activity is teaching writing than the other. There are same aspects that should be understood such as grammar, punctuation and spelling, organization, cohesive and coherent devices and vocabulary. Therefore, the teachers should have a great interest, selection of media and strategies in writing activities. The objectives of the study are (1). to describe the process of teaching and learning writing skill of recount text, (2). to know of the problems faced by the teacher and the students in teaching learning writing skill of recount text. Recount text which retells experiences or happens in the last. A recount text owns an orientations, a kind of happens in chronological messege, personal remarks on the happens, and re orientation which the sequence of events.It can be concluded that teaching writing of recount texts using by digital comics is more useful and effective to be taught to the eighth class students of SMPN 2 Krian Sidoarjo. It can also be seen from the calculation and the table of students’ achievement from their writing score in pre-test and post test by using digital comics is higher than the students’ writing score. Therefore, digital comic can be an appropriate media that can be recommended in teaching writing of recount text. Especially for the eighth class students of SMPN 2 Krian Sidoarjo in academic year 2018/2019.Keywords: Digital Comics (DC), Writing Recount Texts.

Abstract

ABSTRACTZulkifli.2019, The Effect of Teaching Vocabulary Using Picture on The Second Grade Students’ Vocabulary Mastery Thesis. English Department, Graduate Program.University of Islam Malang.Advisor Dr. H. Nur Salam, M.Pd.,                                      The objectives of this research are to know the significant at students ‘on teaching Vocabulary using traditional way and using picture way in mastery vocabulary.The research employed experimental and control group, which consisted of 48 students MTS. The students were put into two groups; twenty four students were put into the experimental groups and another twenty four students were put into control groups. The instrument was test items, administered to the both groups. The data was analyzed with mean score and t-test formula. The result of this research showed that the significant of the students taught of vocabulary by using picture (experimental groups) was better in the post –test showed that out of 24 students and the achievement of the students of control group was at fair standard 24 students classified. This revealed that there was a significant of the experimental group and control group. In the table of significance, it can be seen that on the df = 46 students and the degree of significance 5% the value of degree of significance is 337.31 by comparing the value tois bigger thantt. The result of t-test (to) shows that t-test (t0) > t-table (tt) (337, 31> 2.021). It means that the students who taught by media on students’ vocabulary in experimental group is better that students taught without using media.  Key Words:  Teaching Vocabulary using picture vocabulary mastery

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of giving corrective feedback through peers and teacher in writing paragraph description of junior high school students. The initial sample in this study included 50 students which divided into two groups, experimental group and control group. In peer-corrective feedback group, the correction code was carried by their peers who assessed the paragraph using Chandler's composition model as the coding descriptor. In teacher corrective feedback group was carried by the teacher also using Chandler's composition model as the coding descriptor. Then both score of students’ paragraph are given score by the teacher by using the composition reference by Jacobs et al.  In this study the use T-test is to investigate differences in writing results obtained by students before and after providing corrective feedback from friends and teachers. This finding also revealed to find out the aspects that improve the most after the implementation of peers and teacher feedback. Giving feedback in this study is more focused on grammar and mechanics, paragraph content, vocabulary, and organization. Students also revealed that giving feedback by peers and teacher had a positive impact on the ability in writing their paragraphs and it also could exchange insights with friends.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the effectiveness of using videos and photovoice on the students’ achievement in writing Explanation text. It is a quasi-experimental design which involves 70 students of MAN 1 Banyuwangi in 2020/2021 academic year. XI MIPA 1 as the control group and XI MIPA 2 as the experimental group. These two groups were proved on the same level of writing ability by the score of pre-test. There were six meeting in this research, a meeting for pre-test, four meetings for the treatment through E-Learning Madrasah, and a meeting for post-test. The data obtained were analyzed by using independent t-test formula. The result showed that the t-value =-2.729, p =.008 and the results indicated that there is significant difference after having treatment by using videos and photovoice since p =.008 is less than 0.05.  Based on the result of data analysis, the eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Banyuwangi who were taught by using videos and photovoice achieve better score on writing Explanation text than those who were taught by using PowerPoint.Keywords: videos, photovoice, explanation text

Abstract

The objective of this research was to develop supplementary english speaking book for students of MTsN 1 Malang Gondanglegi. This research was a research and development (R&D) study. There were two types data collection instruments in this research that is questionnaires and interview. The product was supplementary English speaking book. The product consist 4 topics that can be used as speaking topic. Each of them has some sub topics. Every topics began with find vocabularies, vocabularies relates to the topic, commom verb, common expression, some dialogues, marching words and free writing. It also completed by grammar section coded by color that can make students easy to remember.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research aims to determine the effectiveness of vlog media in improving students' speaking abilities better at 7th L students at MTsN 1 Kediri. This research used a design of pre-experimental through one cluster pre-test and post-test. The material provided was a descriptive text. The instrument in pre-test, students are ordered test orally in the class one by one directly, the researcher gives them a topic then the students tell it. while in post-test, students are ordered to make Vlog to speak up by recording. Both of pre-test and post-test must be done about two until five minutes. This research was conducted in 7th L class MTsN 1 Kediri with 20 students as respondents. In this study, data of the research was a test score. The researcher obtained two data from the pre-test and post-test. In this study there were 2 raters. The first rater was a teacher; and the second rater was a researcher. The reliability of this research was inter-rater agreement where there was agreement on the tolerance for different scores between raters. the split score was 2 or more in scale of 1-5. The researcher only used the smaller scores of the split score to be calculated. there are four steps to analyze the data. First, calculating the mean of the scores from the pre-test and post-test. Next, comparing the mean of the pre-test and post-test. Next, calculating the homogeneity test. Lastly, calculating the significance level of the difference in the average data through Paired Sample t-Test. This method is done using SPSS 21. From the analysis above, it could be decided that there was a significant difference in the test results between the pre-test and post-test results of the 14 students that were counted. The students' mean score on the post-test was 92.125 and the mean score from the pre-test was 46.625. The different mean was 45.5 and the significant value was .000. So, the researcher resolved that the use of Vlog was very effective in improving the speaking achievement of 7th L class at MTsN 1 Kediri.

Abstract

In learning and English, EFL leaners and teachers may concern to universe English but actual one the learn and teach specific one. Since there is no absolute boundary in how to learning and teaching English itself together with the growth of Englishes. This survey study makes out the differences of these British and American English and discusses the attitude of learners in term of how teachers of theirs varied in teaching English. The finding revealed that 86.08% of 627 respondents engage themselves in recognizing their knowledge in “Amertish English” and willingness to learn as the norm of English mastery. Further, 62.04-64.5% % of 323 respondents can easily recognize vocabulary items and spelling correctly compared to the use of grammar. 50.9% of respondents correctly differ the forms and 49.1% do incorrectly. Thus, a half of respondents face the language problem here. This means EFL half of learners here have been familiar with Englishes. 127 respondents met the English teachers with vary accents in teaching. Also, 108 respondents say quiet. This could really mean that as a main media of teaching and spreading English, teachers have been teaching English based on personal tendency.Keywords: Englishes, British and American English, EFL pre-university learners, Attitude.

Abstract

This research reports in-depth investigation based on classroom observation about the practice of English as medium of instruction in teaching academic subject matter and how often the teacher spoke English in class. The data were obtained in ten times observation with the science and math teachers as the participant of the research. Observation sheet checklist was used to measure the frequency of English spoken by the teacher. The finding revealed that the school adopt Cambridge international curriculum. Moreover, the practice of EMI was underachieved. Both of the teachers preferred to use mix language than English fully. Moreover, students’ self-anxiety was occurred as the barrier in successful EMI class. This study suggests that the administrator should emphasize the English language policy communicatively to the teacher therefore they will understand of what teachers ought to do. Further, it is very necessary to implement various teaching strategies to emerge the students’ motivation. Key words: Policy, practice, English as a medium of Instruction

Abstract

This research aimed to develope supplementary reading material for students of religion program especially in first grade of Al – Khoirot Islamic Senior High School, Malang. According to the researcher’s preliminary study on February 2019 by analyzing the book that used, namely “Bahasa Inggris X” from the government and analyzing the syllabus, the researcher found many problems from the book such as the book used the common English for the students in Senior High School and didn’t focused for specific student, whereas the students of religion program were not interested to study English. The research design of this study was Research and Development (R&D). The development model used by the researcher was ISD model. The procedures include five steps : analyzing the needed materials of the students in religion program, designing the reading materials, develop reading materials for students of religion program consists of Recount text, Narrative Text, and Song lyric, implementing the product which had been developed and evalutating the result of the implementation. The types of data in this research were quantitative and qualitative data. Questionnaire and observation sheet were the instrument used by the researcher. The research finding indicated that based try-out result and the expert judgment, the developing supplementary reading material were acceptable to be taught at the first grade of the religion program students in Islamic  Senior High School.                       Keywords : Supplementary, Reading material, Religion Program.
