Abstract

This study explores the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in language learning within English and Arabic classes. The research involved 18 participants, encompassing learners and teachers of both languages. It aims to understand their experiences, perceptions, and challenges when incorporating AI into language education. Learners demonstrated diverse use of AI tools such as Chat GPT, Grammarly, and Elsa, leveraging them for various language learning aspects including writing enhancement, speaking practice, and translation. While English learners extensively employed multiple AI tools, Arabic learners primarily relied on Chat GPT for scientific paper writing, with limited exploration of other available AI variations. Participants generally viewed AI integration positively, recognizing its facilitative role in learning, yet raised concerns about potential over-reliance, plagiarism risks, reduced creativity, and inaccuracies. Teachers relied on Grammarly for grammar correction and Chat GPT for language tasks, emphasizing the need for human validation to ensure contextual accuracy despite acknowledging AI benefits. Challenges identified included limited access due to premium features, connectivity issues, and ethical concerns surrounding AI-generated content. The study emphasizes AI's significance as a valuable aid in language education while cautioning against excessive reliance. It highlights the necessity for human intervention to validate AI-generated content, stressing critical thinking and a balanced approach to leverage AI's advantages while mitigating its potential drawbacks.

Abstract

Selecting course books involves matching the material with course objectives and learners' needs. This study examined the “Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/SMAK Kelas X Semester 1 English” textbook material using the McGrath, Cunningsworth, and National Education Standards Agency (BNSP) guidelines to develop an appropriate standard for a textbook evaluation. The blueprint of material evaluation consists of three major stages: pre-evaluation, evaluation, and post-evaluation. The level of compliance was divided into three categories: Yes (= 2 points), No (= 0 points), and Partly (1 point) for the purposes of tabulation and statistical data analysis. This simplified the discussion of the results by allowing a raw score of 0 to 2 for each of the categories examined. The research demonstrates that the textbook is appropriate for use as a teaching tool.  The results suggest that there are some highlights for the material evaluation. The provided activities ought to be well-rounded enough to grab the students' interests. Incorporating genuine texts from actual settings can offer students a true immersion in authentic spoken language, aiding them in effectively practicing language skills for real-life communication. It is important to include representations of gender equality and diverse ethnic groups to cater to the needs of students from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Abstract

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology have had a significant impact across various sectors, including language education. In Indonesia, the implementation of AI in language learning presents substantial opportunities, such as personalized learning and innovative assessment methods. However, there are significant challenges, including infrastructure limitations, technology access gaps, and a lack of teacher training. This research aims to analyze the challenges and opportunities of implementing AI in language learning in Indonesia. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method that combines in-depth interviews with education practitioners, language teachers, and technology experts, as well as document analysis from related literature. The results show that while AI can enhance the quality of learning through adaptive and interactive experiences, its implementation is still hindered by uneven infrastructure, especially in remote areas, and the need for more inclusive language processing models. In conclusion, collaboration among the government, educational institutions, and technology developers is crucial to addressing these challenges and maximizing the potential of AI in language education in Indonesia.
