Abstract

The cello is a musical instrument that plays a vital and distinctive role in the keroncong music ensemble, primarily as a rhythm keeper during the performance. Nowadays, the way the cello is played in keroncong seems to have evolved. Many young artists are now trying to develop their playing style in new directions, such as by adapting it to other music genres. This indicates that playing the cello in keroncong is not static but continues to evolve alongside changing musical tastes, advancements in technology, and socio-cultural factors, leading to a variety of playing styles among its musicians. The keroncong community in Pacitan experienced this same trend: artists from different generations interact, blend, and create diverse playing styles. This study aims to identify the various cello playing styles within the keroncong music community in Pacitan. The research method is qualitative, employing a musicology approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and document review, with data triangulation used for analysis. The findings show that keroncong cello playing goes beyond traditional practices, shaped by social experiences, cross-genre influences, and each artist's role in the local keroncong scene. The study concludes that keroncong cello styles are varied, reflecting each artist's musical interpretation and evolving according to socio-cultural changes.

Abstract

Mental health issues are increasingly receiving widespread attention across various disciplines, including the field of music. Music serves not only as a medium for entertainment and communication, but also as a means of emotional expression and psychological reflection. This study aims to examine the process of creating a musical work that addresses the theme of anxiety disorders through a creative approach that combines musical and non-musical elements. The method used is Practice-Based Research (PBR), an approach that places artistic practice at the core of the research process, with reference to the creative stages of exploration, improvisation, and formation. The result of this study is a musical work entitled Fragile Anxious, a minimalist musical composition that uses glass as the primary medium for producing sound. The creative process in creating this work involves musical techniques such as adaptation, repetition, phasing, and augmentation to build an emotional atmosphere that represents anxiety. This study demonstrates that a simple sound medium, such as glass, can be musically processed to present complex psychological expressions. Furthermore, this work demonstrates how music can be a reflective medium for mental health issues and contribute to the development of creative discourse in contemporary music. Thus, this research not only contributes to the artistic realm, but also opens up an interdisciplinary space between music and psychology.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Music education in schools requires a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Understanding number notation is an important foundation for reading and singing melodies, including in solfeggio exercises. This study aims to analyze the relationship between understanding number notation and the ability to sing solfeggio in grade XC students at St. Arnoldus Janssen Kupang High School. The method used is quantitative research with a correlational design. The sample consisted of 37 students, obtained through total sampling technique. Data were collected using a musical notation understanding questionnaire and a solfeggio singing ability test, then analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test and Pearson Product Moment correlation test. The results showed that both variables were normally distributed and there was a positive and significant relationship between understanding musical notation and solfeggio singing ability, as indicated by a value of r = 0.512 with Sig. = 0.002. These findings indicate that the higher the students' level of understanding of musical notation, the better their ability to sing solfeggio musically. This study confirms that strengthening music theory, especially musical notation, needs to be integrated with vocal exercises to support the development of students' singing skills.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of understanding musical elements on the music analysis skills of 11th grade students in Music Arts classes at St. Arnoldus Jansen High School. Understanding musical elements, such as melody, rhythm, harmony, tempo, dynamics, and song form, is an important foundation for developing musical appreciation and analysis skills. The method used is a quantitative method with a correlational approach. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires to measure the level of understanding of musical elements and tests to assess students' musical analysis skills. The research instruments were tested for validity and reliability before use. Data analysis was performed through normality, homogeneity, Pearson correlation, and simple regression tests using SPSS version 25. The results show that the data are normally distributed and homogeneous, thus meeting the requirements for parametric analysis. The correlation test yielded a value of r = 0.305 with Sig. = 0.070, while the regression test yielded a value of F = 3.494 and Sig. = 0.070. Both results indicate that there is a positive but insignificant relationship between understanding musical elements and musical analysis skills. Thus, understanding musical concepts does not yet have a significant effect on students' musical analysis skills, which may be influenced by other factors such as practical experience and interest in learning music.

Abstract

Choral singing constitutes an essential component of music education that supports the development of musical, social, and affective competencies among students. However, the processes of choir formation and choral learning continue to face various challenges that may hinder the effectiveness of instruction. This study aims to analyze the main challenges encountered in choir formation and choral learning, as well as their pedagogical implications within the context of arts education. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, this research is based on a conceptual review through literature analysis of national and international journal articles published within the last five years. Data were analyzed thematically by categorizing challenges into pedagogical, vocal-technical, and social-managerial dimensions. The findings reveal that disparities in students’ vocal abilities, limited application of adaptive instructional strategies, ineffective rehearsal management, and low levels of motivation and attendance are dominant challenges. These results highlight the importance of collaborative, student-centered, and process-oriented pedagogical approaches in improving the quality and sustainability of choral learning in educational settings

Abstract

K-Pop songs function not only as entertainment but also as a medium for conveying emotional messages and representing meanings closely related to listeners’ experiences. The song “HELLO” by ZEROBASEONE is a ballad that represents feelings of encounter, emotional attachment, and belief in destiny, particularly within the context of a group formed through a survival program and bound by a limited activity period. This study aims to analyze the representation of encounter and destiny in the lyrics of “HELLO” using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic approach. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through lyric documentation and analyzed using the concepts of signifier and signified. The results reveal that the lyrics of “HELLO” construct the meaning of encounter as an emotionally charged moment filled with anticipation, which gradually develops into awareness of mutual attachment and culminates in the belief that the relationship is part of an inevitable destiny. The word “hello” is represented not merely as a greeting, but as a symbol of beginnings, continuity, and resistance to separation. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that “HELLO” represents encounter and destiny as emotional meaning constructions shaped by language, experience, and social context, reinforcing the role of music as a medium for expressing collective emotions between ZEROBASEONE and their fans.
