Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia or Makara Hubs-Asia is a regional journal that seeks to advance understanding of human behavior in the context of Asia through the publication of empirical research articles that may stimulate further research. The word Makara symbolizes the emblem of the journals publisher, Universitas Indonesia, which means the well of knowledge that spreads across the continent. We use the word Asia to refer to people from the Asian continent, regardless of where they live. The journal welcomes research from any discipline that provides significant advancement of our understanding of human behavior in the context of Asia. The journal welcomes original research and review articles from the social sciences and humanities. Disciplines covered in this journal include Anthropology, Communication, Cultural Study, Criminology, Education, Management, Psychology, Psychiatry, Political Science, Public Policy, and Sociology. The mission of our journal is to stimulate research on human behavior in the context of Asia, which will ultimately improve our understanding of human behavior in Asia. The Asian continent has pressing social challenges in the 21st century, and this journal contributes to addressing those issues.

Abstract

Indonesian migrants in Taiwan have been dominated by low skilled workers who are labelled uneducated sojourners, consumptive, the misplacement of future orientation, and a minority group struggling to survive. Several individuals concern about the migrant condition, and they are so-called migrant social entrepreneurs. Through social-religious activities and interrelations with the migrant worker community, the Indonesian entrepreneurs have created solidarity for migrant workers’ to generate living conditions that are more favourable and improve their livelihoods. Three important factors shape this condition: the marginal position of second-class migrant workers-immigrants, the virtuous value of religion, and social apprehension. Thorough analysing the religious experiences of entrepreneurs and social-religious activities, this paper shows the positive effects of the relationship between business activities and religious value application, which establish the immigrant self-identity, solidarity, leadership, and collective work formation of the Indonesian migrant community in Taiwan. The primary data is based on the observation of participants’ daily business activities and in-depth interviews with Indonesian entrepreneurs from June to December 2014. The ethnographic research method is applied as a means to explore the effect that migrant-entrepreneur social relations have on the mode of entrepreneurship practices

Abstract

Entrepreneurship is the symbol of endeavor and success in business, and entrepreneurs play a crucial role in economic and social development of communities. Since Organizational Entrepreneurship (OE) contribute to earning stable finance required for administration of urban affairs, it is very important in the case of municipalities. For this reason, this study aims to investigate the role of social capital (SC) in the development of entrepreneurship in Tehran municipality. Research method was descriptive and non-experimental, and required data were collected through 204 questionnaires distributed among managers and experts of the organization. Stratified sampling was used, in which 37 managers and 167 experts participated. Number of male participants was 147, and number of female participants was 57. The mean age of participants was 41 years, and its standard deviation was 0.765. In order to test the research hypothesis, structural equation modeling (SEM) was used. The results of the study showed that social capital and its three dimensions (Cognitive, Relational and Structural dimensions) had positive significant effect on organizational entrepreneurship.

Abstract

Previous studies on alienation were mostly done within Western business context focusing on gender and racial/ ethnicity differences. However, their results were still equivocal. Less attention has been given to address the phenomenon in higher education context, especially in a developing country with collectivist culture. The present study examined gender differences at the levels of alienation amongst psychology students enrolling in semester two, four, six, and eight at the University of Indonesia. Participants were 107 female and 20 male university students (Mage = 19.95; range = 18– 24 years old). It was found that levels of alienation among male and female students were not significantly different. Although male students showed higher levels of alienation than their female counterparts, only semester six female and male students showed significance difference at their level of alienation. Results indicated that gender had a marginal influence on alienation. These findings suggested that the awareness of university demands and learning process are important; familiarity to learning environment is vital; and optimisation of the student support service is needed.

Abstract

This study has explored the role of cultural intelligence as a mediator in the relationship between the openness to experience personality trait and job satisfaction among expatriates. Expatriates were required to fill up online questionnaires to measure all the three variables. This study used a regression and bootstrapping analysis to test the hypothesis in a sample of 265 expatriates. The result indicates that the variance in job satisfaction accountable to the openness to experience personality trait is fully mediated through cultural intelligence. This finding provides evidence that possessing cultural intelligence acts as a mechanism in which an open expatriate could feel satisfied with his or her job. Moreover, this study discusses the practical implications especially for multinational companies and suggests some future research directions.

Abstract

Past studies indicate that the effect of intergroup contact on outgroup attitude is not isolated to contextual factors. One of the contextual factors that has begun to be studied is group norm. However, group norm in these studies is still merely conceptualized as the perception of how ingroup members evaluate outgroup members. In fact, according to norm focus theory, in a given context, individuals are influenced, at least, by two types of group norms, namely injunctive norms (i.e., what most people morally accept to do) and descriptive norms (i.e., what most people do). To fill the gap, present studies attempt to answer the question of how two types of group norms might have different effects on the relationship of intergroup contact and outgroup attitude. Built on past studies, it was hypothesized that both quality (H1) and quantity (H2) of cross-group friendship would positively affect outgroup attitude. Further, built on the fact that the nature of attitude in present studies is more utilitarian than hedonic, it was predicted that injunctive norms would be more likely to function as moderator in the effect of cross-group friendship on outgroup attitude, either in dimensions of quality (H3) or quantity (H4). 110 Muslim students were recruited as participants and asked to fill in a self-report questionnaire regarding their interactions with Christians. The findings partly support the hypotheses.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the influence of marriage communication skills and sexual satisfaction on the marriage quality of female nurses who work at a mental hospital and whose husbands also work. Working females, especially those who work in shifts, have less time to spend with their families and spouse, which, in turn prove to be great challenges to building a good relationship between partners. Our principal instrument of data collection is questionnaires. 108 female nurses who work at Dr. Radjiman Wediodiningrat Mental Hospital and have working husbands participated on this study. The results of the multiple regression analysis demonstrated that marriage communication skills and sexual satisfaction can influence marriage quality. This finding suggests that the marriage communication skills variable and the sexual satisfaction variable exert 58.1% influence on the marriage quality variable, while the remaining 41.9% influence is exerted by other variables. These findings are expected to support our recommendation for employing institutions to reconsider the distribution of their employees’ working hours, so that each individual can spend more time with their families. Besides that, every couple must proactively find the best way to maintain their marriage quality by taking into account communication quality and sexual satisfaction factors.

Abstract

Tropes have always attracted the attention of specialists in linguistic as well as in literature, but it seems that there are still some problems which can not be solved, some topics are not yet explained clearly. This research is an effort to understand the formation of tropes from semantic point of view. It does not claim to analyse all tropes, because there are too many tropes to be analysed. By telling about the relation between the signifier, the signified and the referent, this research tries to achieve a better understanding of the problems related to the tropes.

Abstract

The research has a starting point from assumption that compose accurate social marketing strategy is being needed to overcome social health and environmental problems in the sleim settlement area in Jakarta. The strategy should consider the condition of target area, target adopters and some factors that influence in the community participation to some social products. The research was done in three sleims area, (i) narrow street, (ii) flood plain river and along the railway track. The research was designed as descriptive research correlation which is analyzed by multiple regression and distribution frequency table. The result of the research is being used as material for compilling social marketing strategy. The component strategy consist of consideration of marketing mix and communication elements.

Abstract

The Indonesian people as a nation consist of a variety of ethnic groups with differentiated culture as well as witch has been planted over such long periods by authorities, has finally exploded coming to the surface in form of various rioting. Should a more in-depth analysis be made then, the actual basic matter to bridge the problem in the existing tolerance for the differences within our multicultural society. An understanding of a certain related tolerance according to François Shanen is expressed in language. As such, literary works and other essays in newspaper with SARA as themes as well as the nation disintegration, forms the corpus of this investigation. From the analysis of the interdiscourse between literary and non-literary texts, it has been conclude that there exists a parallel of thought patterns offered by the literary and non-literary texts against the insight of tolerance in Indonesia, that is violence in the country as caused by there being no tolerance for that which is difference be in differing opinions as to religion, ethnicity or race. Such matter has brought forth the spread of deceptive hatred against religious, racial and certain ethic groups.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to look for determinants that effect leadership. The research was conducted in 13 airports and in the head office of its managing organization consisting of 84 different working units on different levels. The sample size is 3.048 respondents from a total of 4.150 employees. The findings are 22 hypotheses explaining leadership significantly: 16 independent variables determine positively and show a mutual impact as well as an accumulative direct influence to and from leadership. Only one variable shows a positive impact on leadership without any impact back. Five variables show a negative and non-accumulative effect towards leadership. Determinants show to have a positive, mutual and accumulative direct impact towards leadership. These determinants are: conduct to change, communication, working with leadership, networking, developing human resources, influence, working in groups, managing differences, using local language, commitment, discipline, non-reward based working, optimism, mutual caring, and consistency. One determinant, leader using software other than MS Office has a positive effect towards leadership. However, leadership has no impact on the use of software other than MS Office towards the leader. The other 5 variables show a negative, non-mutual and non-accumulative impact towards leadership, these variables are: happiness, perseverance, efficiency, serving others with respect, and adherence to norms.
