Abstract

Mental health problems are an issue that is getting more and more attention in various parts of the world, including in Indonesia. Based on data from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, the prevalence of People with Mental Disorders (ODGJ) continues to increase every year. ODGJ, which includes individuals with severe mental disorders such as schizophrenia, requires not only medical care but also a holistic approach, including spiritual support. Although there are various studies on spiritual therapy, there are almost no studies that examine the implementation of Qur'anic therapy in the context of pesantren-based rehabilitation institutions in Indonesia, especially those that apply the concept of living Qur'an. This study aims to analyze and explain the implementation of Qur'anic verses as spiritual therapy for the recovery of ODGJ at the Daarul Hakim Social Welfare Institution in Sumber Village, Kradenan District, Blora Regency, which is a special Islamic boarding school for ODGJ that receives support from the Indonesian government. The results of the study show that the implementation of Qur'anic verses is realized through several forms of spiritual therapy, such as ruqyah syar'iyyah, recitation of certain surahs, dhikr, and structured religious assistance. These practices not only function as a method of spiritual healing, but also as a means of fostering inner peace, reducing psychological symptoms, and improving the self-control ability of ODGJ students. Thus, the application of Qur'anic verses as spiritual therapy has a significant contribution to the recovery process of ODGJ and is an important foundation to be studied further in the context of socio-religious institutions, filling the research gap related to the integration of Islamic spirituality in pesantren-based mental rehabilitation.

Abstract

This study examines the interpretation of the stories of the prophets in the Qur'an through an epistemological critique of Ahmad Muhammad Khalafullah's literary-historical approach using al-Ghazālī's theory of imagination (al-khayāl). Although there has been extensive discussion of the narratives of the prophets in the Qur'an and literary approaches, previous studies have rarely examined the epistemological implications of imagination within Khalafullah's literary-historical framework, particularly in relation to the ontological truth of revelation. Khalafullah places the imaginative dimension in Qur'anic stories as a literary element that does not depend on historical truth, thus raising debates about the ontological status of revelatory stories. Meanwhile, al-Ghazālī, through Mishkāt al-Anwār and Iḥyā' ‘Ulūm al-Dīn, asserts that imagination is an epistemic medium that connects sensory reality and spiritual essence, so it cannot be reduced to fiction. This study aims to critically reassess Khalafullah's position by employing al-Ghazali's hierarchical epistemology of truth. This study employs a qualitative literature based method with descriptive critical analysis of primary works of Khalafullah and al-Ghazali, supported by contemporary Quranic studies. The findings demosntrate that al-Ghazālī's epistemology of al-khayāl offers a corrective framework to Khalafullah's reductionist tendency by situating Qur'anic narratives within a layered structure of truth encompassing literal, moral, and spiritual dimensions. This integrative framework preserves the pedagogical function of imagination without negating the ontological status of revelation. This study contributes to strengthening contemporary interpretation methodology by offering an integrative perspective between literary aspects and revelatory truth. At an international level, the study offers a conceptual alternative for ongoing debates on scripture, narrative, and imagination across Islamic Studies, religious, hermeneuthics, and comparative theology.

Abstract

Contemporary Islamic education in Indonesia faces a critical challenge: students master Qur'anic recitation technically but struggle to comprehend, internalize, and apply Qur'anic values in daily life, reflecting a problematic textual-contextual dichotomy in pedagogical practice. This study addresses this gap by developing an Integrated Tilawah Framework-a transformative model of Qur'anic literacy-through thematic analysis of tilawah interpretations across five authoritative tafsir works (Al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir, Al-Qurtubi, Al-Mishbah, Al-Azhar) using Braun & Clarke's Methodology. Analysis of two key verses (Q.S. Al Baqarah:121; Al-Muzzammil:4) identified four integrated dimensions: Authentic Transmission Preservation (16.7%), Deep Meaning Comprehension (41.7%), Spiritual Value Internalization (16.7%), and Transformative Practical Application (25.0%). The framework demonstrates substantial synergy with Paulo Freire's critical literacy theory and Ron Miller's holistic education, offering a paradigm shift from technical-passive toward transformative-active Qur'anic engagement. This synthesis of classical Islamic hermeneutics with contemporary critical pedagogy provides educators a comprehensive, culturally-rooted blueprint for curriculum development in Islamic educational contexts. Expert judgment validation is recommended to confirm implementation feasibility. The findings reveal four core themes: authentic transmission preservation, deep meaning comprehension, spiritual value internalization, and transformative practical application. These themes are synthesized into a hierarchical and cyclical framework that reconceptualizes tilawah as transformative Qur'anic literacy rather than mere recitation. Globally, this framework offers a theoretically grounded and pedagogically operational model that contributes to discussions on religious literacy, critical pedagogy, and holistic education. It provides a transferable reference for Qur'anic education across diverse cultural contexts, promoting faith-based learning that is intellectually rigorous, spiritually meaningful, and socially transformative.
