Abstract

In general, Karl Marx's discussion is framed in socio-political aspects. However, Buya Hamka chose Karl Marx as an influential figure in the modern century and mentioned him in the Al-Azhar interpretation. This article was written to analyze Karl Marx's position in Buya Hamka's Al-Azhar interpretation. This research is framed qualitatively with a descriptive-analytical approach to realize primary data and reveal Hamka's argumentative description related to Karl Marx. This research is based on two primary sources, the Al-Azhar interpretation and research relevant to the discussion. To reveal the representation of Karl Marx in Surah Al-Baqarah verses 177 and 272, this study theoretically adopts Stuart Hall's theory of representation to comprehensively reveal the role and position of Karl Marx. Preliminary results show that at the reflective representation level, Marxism is often portrayed in mainstream media as a dangerous ideology. Also, at the intentional representation level, the political bias of the old order, which tended to be anti-communist, colored Hamka's interpretation and positioned Marx as its figurehead. And at the constructional representation level, Hamka compared Marxist teachings with the Islamic justice system. In this case, Hamka's interpretation shows the results of social and cultural construction in the anti-communist era. Ultimately, this study bridges the understanding of Karl Marx's socialism and Islamic social teachings with nuances of interpretation, as well as offering a critical study of non-Muslim figures who have made significant contributions to Islamic discourse.

Abstract

This research departs from the urgency of understanding poverty not only as an economic issue, but also as a multidimensional phenomenon that is full of social and spiritual meaning in an Islamic perspective. This study aims to reinterpret the term "miskīn" in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 184 using Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic approach. The research aims to explore the textual and contextual meaning of the verse through Ricoeur's three stages of hermeneutics: semantic understanding, reflection, and existential appropriation, to produce meanings that are more relevant to contemporary social conditions, especially in the context of poverty in Indonesia. The method used is qualitative with literature studies as a data collection technique, and analysis is carried out descriptive-analytically based on a hermeneutic theoretical framework. The results of the study show that the term "miskīn" in the verse does not only refer to material conditions, but also reflects the structural vulnerability, helplessness, and social responsibility of Muslims towards vulnerable groups. This verse contains an ethical dimension that demands the internalization of the values of care, empathy, and social justice through worship such as fidyah. The conclusion of this study emphasizes that the understanding of the text of the Qur'an needs to be contextualized with social realities through a hermeneutic approach, so that the divine message can be a transformative inspiration in overcoming poverty as a fundamental humanitarian problem.

Abstract

Research Objectives: The research aims to demonstrate Muhammad al-Ghazali's approach to the objective interpretation of the surahs of the Holy Quran, and the extent to which it meets the conditions for the objective interpretation of the surah. Study Methodology: The research followed an inductive and descriptive approach, studying the entire interpretation. In light of this study, the issues related to the method of the objective interpretation of the surah were identified, and the main and subheadings were developed from there. Results: The most important results reached by the research are that al-Ghazali's approach represents concise spiritual reflections and insights, focuses on cognitive foundations, and generally fulfills the conditions for the objective interpretation of the surahs of the Quran, with the exception of some conditions. Research Originality: The value of the research is demonstrated by the extent to which the conditions for the objective interpretation of this book are met.

Abstract

This research delves into the idea of physiognomy as a means of interpreting human nonverbal cues within the context of the Qur'an and Fakhruddin al-Razi's commentary in Mafātihul Ghaib. Traditionally considered a pseudo-science, physiognomy is reimagined here as a link between the physical and spiritual aspects of human expression. The study addresses a gap in prior research, which often confines nonverbal analysis in the Qur'an to linguistic or semiotic aspects, neglecting psychological and spiritual dimensions. Employing a qualitative library research method, the study investigates nine Qur'anic verses that depict facial expressions, gestures, and bodily signals through al-Razi's hermeneutical perspective. The results indicate that al-Razi consistently views the human body as a communicative entity that expresses internal states-such as faith, arrogance, sorrow, and joy-through nonverbal cues that resonate with divine communication. By integrating al-Razi's interpretations with contemporary nonverbal communication theories, the study highlights an epistemological continuity between classical tafsir and cognitive science. This study aims to analyze how al-Razi interprets nonverbal human signals in the Qur'an and to connect his interpretation with modern cognitive science.

Abstract

This research examines the major challenges confronting tafsir education in halaqat al-'ilmiyyah (study circles) within Borno State, Nigeria. The objectives of the research are to assess the current state of tafsir teaching, identify the main obstacles affecting its effectiveness, analyze their implications on Islamic educational goals, particularly in preserving religion (ḥifẓ al-dīn) and intellect (ḥifẓ al-'aql) as emphasized in Maqasid al-Shari'ah, and to propose strategies for improving the system. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining eighty (80) questionnaires administered to students of halaqat and twenty (20) semi-structured interviews with scholars actively engaged in tafsir teaching. Findings reveal that the absence of a structured curriculum, linguistic barriers, socio-economic hardship, insecurity, and resistance to modern educational innovations significantly hinder effective tafsir education. The lack of standardization in teaching content and limited access to materials reduce learning consistency and depth. Insecurity, especially the Boko Haram insurgency, further disrupts the continuity of study circles across affected areas. The research recommends the establishment of a unified curriculum, teacher training, improved resource support, and collaboration with educational authorities to enhance the quality and sustainability of tafsir learning in the region.

Abstract

Where do the meanings lie? This is one of the most intriguing questions in Qur'anic studies both in the West and the East. Some scholars say that the meaning of the Qur'an is inherently located in the scripture. Then, Indonesian Salafism came up with the slogan "Back to the Qur'an". However, some scholars challenged that notion and said that no meaning in the scripture, because meanings are located in the tradition, mufassir. Sukidi Mulyadi proposed the notion of "Back to the tradition", instead of to the Qur'an, because no meaning in the Qur'an. This article will elaborate the Sukidi's notion, elucidate his arguments, examine the context and implications of his claims, and then compare with the views of some related scholars, such as Mun'im Sirry and Sahiron Syamsuddin. This work will use the application of qualitative content analysis. With this approach, this article will provide valuable insights into the complexities of Qur'anic exegesis. By doing so, the study not only clarifies Sukidi's contribution but also highlights the broader intellectual dynamics of meaning-making in Qur'anic exegesis. This article demonstrates the novelty of revisiting Sukidi's thesis in dialogue with contemporary Indonesian scholarship, thereby offering significant insights into the evolving contestations of authority and interpretation in Qur'anic studies.

Abstract

Previous studies on asbāb al-nuzūl primarily focus on hermeneutical approaches, legal derivation, and classical or contemporary exegetical perspectives. However, a significant research gap remains, as these studies rarely connect the occasions of revelation to modern socio-political challenges such as misinformation, negative media exposure, and their psychological impact on society. This study seeks to address this gap by integrating classical and contemporary frameworks of asbāb al-nuzūl with current societal issues. The objective of this research is to explain the methods used to determine authentic asbāb al-nuzūl, to examine the conceptual understanding of classical and modern scholars, to explore the functions of asbāb al-nuzūl, and to analyze its implications for Islamic legal rulings (fiqh) and contemporary social concerns. Using a qualitative library-based method, this study examines Qur'anic verses alongside authoritative classical and modern texts. Data were analyzed inductively through classification of methodological approaches, comparison of scholarly perspectives, and exploration of legal and social implications supported by relevant textual evidence. The findings show four major methods for determining asbāb al-nuzūl: selecting the most authentic narration, preferring the stronger (rājiḥ) narration, reconciling complementary reports, and acknowledging double revelation when reports cannot be combined. Classical scholars emphasize the indispensability of asbāb al-nuzūl for accurate interpretation, while contemporary scholars highlight its role in contextualizing Qur'anic teachings for modern realities. The implications of this study affirm that asbāb al-nuzūl is crucial for deriving legal rulings—such as the phased prohibition of alcohol and the legal reasoning behind ẓihār—and for strengthening the relevance of Qur'anic interpretation in addressing modern issues like misinformation, ethical criticism, and responsible public discourse. This demonstrates that the Qur'an's contextual wisdom remains essential for guiding contemporary society.

Abstract

The revitalization of the teacher's role as murabbi in the digital era is an urgent necessity to preserve the holistic and spiritual essence of Islamic education. The rapid advancement of digital technology has transformed learning interactions, often reducing them to transactional exchanges and diminishing the moral and spiritual bond between teachers and students. This study aims to explore how Fazlur Rahman's double-movement hermeneutic approach to Surah Āli 'Imrān (3:79) can offer a conceptual foundation for restoring the role of teachers as murabbi in the digital context. Using a qualitative library research method that analyzes both classical and contemporary tafsīr and studies on hermeneutics and Islamic pedagogy, the research follows three stages: historical analysis of the verse, extraction of moral values, and contextual application in digital education. The findings reveal that the ideal murabbi embodies intellectual mastery, moral integrity, and spiritual guidance rooted in rabbāniyyah values. The study concludes that integrating these values into digital pedagogy can strengthen ethical and spiritual dimensions in education. Theoretically, it contributes to the discourse on Islamic hermeneutics and digital pedagogy, while practically, it provides insights for teachers and institutions to implement rabbāniyyah-based education in digital learning environments.

Abstract

Qur'anic interpretation has undergone diverse methodological developments throughout Islamic intellectual history, one of which is tafsīr bi al-ra'y or interpretation based on reason and ijtihād. However, this approach has long been debates among scholars, particularly concerning its potential status as a form of dakhil fi al-tafsir. In this context, two prominent scholars, Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn 'Āshūr, represent two contrasting epistemological orientations. Ibn Taymiyyah viewed tafsir bi al-ra'yi critically, considering it a deviation when not grounded in authentic narrations from the Prophet, the Companions, and the Tābi'īn. Conversely, Ibn 'Āshūr, as a modernist exegete, legitimized the use of reason in interpreting the Qur'an, provided it remained consistent with shar'ī principles and linguistic conventions. This study aims to analyze the epistemological foundations and interpretive methodologies of both scholars, highlighting how their differing intellectual contexts shaped their approaches to tafsīr bi al-ra'y. The research gap lies in the limited comparative studies that systematically explore this epistemological tension between textual traditionalism and contextual rationalism. Using a qualitative approach and library research, this study examines primary sources of tafsīr and uṣūl al-tafsīr written by both figures. This study contributes to the broader discourse of Qur'anic hermeneutics by offering a nuanced understanding of how classical and modern paradigms interact in defining the boundaries of rational interpretation, thereby enriching contemporary discussions on methodological renewal in Qur'anic studies.

Abstract

In this digital era, religious practices are no longer confined to physical spaces but have also been transformed into digital spaces. This phenomenon is represented through the practice of Qur'an journaling which has recently become a trend on several social media platforms as an actualization of the activity of tadabbur al-Qur'an. Therefore, this study aims to determine how tadabbur al-Qur'an is manifested through practice Qur'an journaling that takes place in virtual communities on social media, and to understand the dynamics of meaning and internalization of Qur'anic values in this practice. The theory used in this study is Wolfgang Iser's reception theory to understand the interaction between the text of the Qur'an and readers in practice Qur'an journaling. Using a netnographic approach, data was collected through participant observation, interviews, and documentation of the activities of the Indonesian Al-Qur'an Journal community, which takes place virtually. The research findings show that, the practice Qur'an journaling in this virtual community, it is structured through three stages, namely: Writing verses of the Qur'an along with their translations, understanding verses based on interpretation references and guidance learning menu, and personal reflection that connects the meaning of the verse with the context of everyday life. In this practice, community members take an active role as implied readers who fill in the gaps in the Qur'anic text through their life experiences and personal reflections, thereby forming a process of internalization and actualization of Qur'anic values. These findings indicate that Qur'an journaling is a contemporary form of tadabbur that broadens the understanding and application of the Qur'an in the digital sphere.
