Abstract

The Concept of Asbabun Nuzul in the Context of Warfare: A Tafsir Ahkam Study of QS. Al-Baqarah: 190–193 Based on Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, explores the concept of asbabun nuzul and legal rulings (ahkam) within the war-related verses of the Qur'an. Focusing on Al-Qurtubi's tafsir, the research analyzes the historical and socio-political contexts surrounding the revelation of QS. Al-Baqarah: 190–193. Utilizing a library-based method and historical-contextual approach, it investigates both the background of revelation and its legal implications. Al-Qurtubi's interpretation highlights key Islamic principles in warfare, such as justice, self-defense, and the prohibition of transgression, especially toward non-combatants. The findings affirm that these verses provide ethical guidance in protecting civilians and limiting harm. The study also discusses the contemporary relevance of these principles in the framework of international law, particularly concerning the right to self-defense and civilian protection. Ultimately, this research contributes to the ongoing discourse on Islamic jurisprudence and its application in modern global contexts, emphasizing the value of classical exegesis in shaping fair international policies.

Abstract

Wasathiyah Islam has become one of the issues that has been widely researched recently. This issue arises as a response to the increasing behavior of extremism and radicalism in society. Several studies indicate that wasathiyah is a concept of teaching aimed at producing a moderate character in every aspect of community life. This research aims to uncover the concept of wasathiyah by using QS. 2:143 as the primary source and revealing its meaning through the ma'na cum maghza approach. This study is a library research using a qualitative method based on a deconstructive paradigm—the interpretation of QS. 2:143 is conducted with textual-literal analysis (grammar study) combined with contextual analysis (micro and macro historical study). Both reviews were conducted to understand the substance of the phenomenal historical meaning and the significant dynamics of the implementation of QS. 2:143. The sources of literature used are books on understanding, grammar, and history as data sources in this research. The results of the study show that based on QS. 2:143, wasatiyah is a hallmark of Islam, which does not teach ideologies and doctrines of extremism. Islam also provides certain limitations on radical and liberal thoughts that allow reason to work outside the control of the heart in practice. Thus, in the contemporary context, the discourse of wasathiyah represents Islam's position as a religion that has many methodologies and pays attention to the aspect of balance within it, not only in social behavior but also in worship practices, beliefs, and mu'amalah.

Abstract

The increasing number of cases involving violations of children's human rights indicates that the principles of child protection have not been fully implemented in society. Understanding and internalizing children's human rights is crucial and must be embraced by all parties, including families, educational institutions, and broader communities. This understanding is vital to creating a safe and nurturing environment that supports the optimal growth and development of children, while simultaneously preventing acts of violence, neglect, and exploitation. This article aims to explore the interpretation of Qur'anic verses related to the rights of children and analyze the implications of fulfilling these rights on their emotional well-being. Although children's human rights are not mentioned explicitly in the Qur'an, the essential values and principles concerning their rights are implicitly conveyed across various verses. This study uses a literature-based, descriptive-analytical method and applies a thematic approach by collecting relevant verses under a unified theme to construct a comprehensive conceptual framework. The findings suggest that fulfilling children's rights in light of the Qur'anic teachings has significant implications for their emotional well-being. First, the right to life (QS. Al-An'am: 151) contributes to children's sense of safety and protection, fostering happiness. Second, the right to sustenance (QS. Al-Baqarah: 233) and the right to education (QS. At-Tahrim: 6) enhance children's feelings of being valued and supported, thereby promoting optimism. Third, the right to kind treatment (QS. Ali 'Imran: 159) supports the development of empathy and interpersonal skills. Fourth, the right to express opinions (QS. Ash-Shaffat: 102) nurtures critical thinking, confidence, and a sense of responsibility.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of a differentiated instructional model grounded in STEAM principles, augmented by an interactive PILAR media, on the memorization of Surah At-Tin among fourth-grade elementary students. A true experimental pretest–posttest control-group design was employed, involving an experimental cohort (n=6) and a control cohort (n=9). Both groups completed a baseline assessment of Qur'anic memorization before undergoing four instructional sessions; the experimental group received STEAM-based differentiated activities and digital media support, whereas the control group experienced conventional lecture-based instruction. Posttest results revealed that the experimental group achieved a mean score of 91.67 (SD=8.54), compared to 69.44 (SD=15.32) in the control group. Normalized gain analysis indicated a high gain (g=0.90) for the experimental cohort and a moderate gain (g=0.64) for the control cohort. These findings demonstrated that aligning pedagogical strategies with individual learning preferences, integrating multimodal STEAM tasks, and leveraging interactive technology significantly enhanced both the quantity and accuracy of Qur'anic memorization. The study concluded that a differentiated STEAM-based approach, supported by PILAR media, constituted a superior method for optimizing primary-level Qur'anic memorization and recommended its broader application and longitudinal evaluation.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the tradition of reciting the Qur'an at a funeral as a manifestation of the concept of the Living Qur'an in the socio-cultural context of the Bireuen community in Aceh. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and visual documentation. The research findings show that this tradition is not only understood as a form of respect for the deceased but also as a means to strengthen social solidarity, reinforce Islamic identity, and embody the actualization of Qur'anic values, such as amal jariyah and ukhuwah. However, in the last decade, this tradition has faced challenges from reformist groups who criticize it as a form of heresy, as well as the dynamics of the younger generation who have begun to reinterpret its meaning within the framework of purifying religious teachings. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA)-based analysis shows that completing the Qur'an at a funeral expands the realm of the Living Qur'an into the event of death, showing a close relationship between the sacred text, social practices, and the life experiences of the local Muslim community. This study provides a new contribution to enrich the discourse of the Living Qur'an by emphasizing the importance of understanding Qur'anic practices within the framework of contemporary culture and social change

Abstract

This study aims to examine Wahbah Az-Zuhaili's views on the practice of magic and black magic in Islam as explained in Tafsir al-Munir. Using qualitative methods with tahlili and descriptive-analytical approaches, this study analyzes three main verses: Surah Al-Baqarah: 102, Al-Falaq: 4, and Thaha: 66-70. The research process was carried out through a literature study of the interpretation text, complemented by a comparison with classical literature and contextualization of black magic practices in Indonesia. The results of the study indicate that black magic is a form of deviation from the faith that can lead to disbelief, while black magic is categorized as a branch of black magic because it contains elements of manipulation through supernatural media. Az-Zuhaili emphasized that black magic is a major sin that deserves severe legal sanctions. The mitigation strategies offered include strengthening monotheism, ruqyah syar'iyyah, and Islamic education as preventive measures. This research emphasizes the importance of Tafsir al-Munir as a reference for contemporary interpretation that is not only normative but also responsive to modern socio-religious challenges. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of tafsir, fiqh, and the local Indonesian context in explaining magic and witchcraft in an applied manner.

Abstract

Catcalling, as a form of symbolic gender-based violence, has become a serious issue in urban public spaces, particularly within Muslim societies. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of catcalling through a Qur'anic interpretive framework, focusing on Tafsir Al-Misbah by Quraish Shihab, to formulate educational and advocative strategies grounded in Islamic spirituality. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach and thematic tafsir methodology, data were collected from in-depth interviews with female catcalling survivors and a textual study of relevant Qur'anic verses and prophetic traditions. The findings reveal that catcalling contradicts the principle of karāmah insāniyyah (human dignity) (Q.S. Al-Isra' [17]:70), the prohibition of talmizu (mockery) (Q.S. Al-Hujurat [49]:11), and the Qur'anic spirit of gender-equal righteous deeds (Q.S. An-Nahl [16]:97). Moreover, prophetic teachings on ethical speech serve as a moral foundation to reject verbal abuse. The study also finds that spiritual recovery grounded in Islamic values can be an effective curative approach to the psychosocial impact on victims. Preventive strategies involving maqāṣid al-syari'ah-based education and Qur'anic public campaigns have the potential to foster a culture of respectful and just communication. These findings affirm that Qur'anic interpretation, when applied contextually and practically, can serve as a transformative instrument in addressing gender-based violence. The methodology included in-depth interviews with survivors and semantic-thematic analysis of religious texts.

Abstract

This study examines the understanding of students at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra (UINSU) regarding aurat and sharia-compliant clothing as outlined in QS. An-Nur: 31 and QS. Al-Ahzab: 59. Employing a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, the research explores the subjective experiences of 20 students from diverse faculties through in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Findings reveal that while most students possess a general awareness of Aurat boundaries, only a few can articulate the relevant Qur'anic arguments in detail. The practice of wearing sharia-compliant clothing is predominantly shaped by social influences-such as peer dynamics, campus culture, and digital media exposure-rather than a deep textual understanding of the verses. Social media functions as a contested space: it simultaneously serves as a vehicle for Islamic outreach (Da'wah) and as a channel for aesthetic fashion trends, often leading to ambivalence in religious expression. Thematic analysis identifies three core factors influencing students' clothing practices: religious education, social norms within the campus environment, and digital media influence. This study underscores the urgency of a contextual and integrative Islamic educational framework-grounded in Maqashid Shariah-to cultivate an ethical, reflective, and substantive awareness of Islamic dress among contemporary Muslim students.

Abstract

This study examines the Quranic terms "Dukhān" and "Wardatan Ka-ddihān" found in Surah Ad-Dukhan (10–11) and Surah Ar-Rahman (37) through a thematic scientific lens. Using a qualitative approach, it bridges classical tafsir (interpretation) with modern astronomical insights. The term "Dukhān" is interpreted as cosmic dust, possibly symbolizing the universe's final phase, while "Wardatan Ka-ddihān" is linked to the explosive death of a star, resembling nebulae such as the Rosette Nebula. These findings suggest that the Quran contains descriptions that align with observable cosmic phenomena, highlighting its relevance to scientific exploration. The research underscores the potential of religious texts to inspire inquiry and deepen understanding of the universe. By integrating faith and science, this study encourages interdisciplinary dialogue and opens new pathways for interpreting sacred texts in light of contemporary knowledge. Ultimately, it contributes to both Quranic scholarship and the broader conversation on the harmony between spirituality and scientific discovery.
