Abstract

This study aims to look at the ideas and knowledge of how to use asbāb al-nuzūl in the work of Qur'an interpretation. The main focus in this article is to explore the principles behind asbāb al-nuzūl in Islamic scholarly interpretation. The discussion aims to challenge concerns regarding the legitimacy of accounts, the categorization of texts, and the correlation between written material and its historical environment. It analyzes how traditional scholars such as al-Wāḥidī, al-Suyūṭī, and Ibn Taymiyyah developed strategies to identify the motives behind certain verses; simultaneously, it will highlight how modern thinkers such as Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd and Fazlur Rahman provide more situational and adaptive interpretive approaches that align with current movements and societal trends. The method of this study uses a form of research called literature study which involves looking at old and new books and sources. This article intends to question the belief that asbāb al-nuzūl is exclusively related to past events. Instead, it argues that certain reasons are constructs shaped by society, representing the first Muslim community's interpretive understanding of the verse that sought to adapt the verse's contested meaning to the challenges of the times. In addition, this article will also shed light on important rules in asbāb al-nuzūl studies, including al-'ibrah bi 'umūm al-lafẓ lā bi khuṣūṣ al-sabab and the tension between lafzi and sababī methods. The result shows that a lot of asb b reports are more about how to read and interpret than to tell true history The end says that today we need to put classic ideas with modern ways of understanding together.

Abstract

This study re-examines the Qur'anic discourse on polygamy in the context of the patriarchal social structures of ancient Middle Eastern societies, where women were often regarded as property and denied bodily autonomy. Within this historical setting, the Qur'an introduced a significant ethical intervention by limiting the practice of polygamy and imposing a strict condition of justice. This restriction was not a validation of male privilege, but a moral correction aimed at gradually reforming an unequal social order. The result of this research has been collected through a qualitative method by using the scriptures as main sources. A transdisciplinary and futuristic hermeneutical approach has helped the authors in analyzing how the Qur'an allows polygamy with certain conditions for the sake of gender equality. The researchers emphasize a contextual and progressive moral framework responding social change which has not been discussed by previous research. It also recognizes the possibility of future shifts in human and ecological conditions that may influence the ethical balance of gender relations.

Abstract

This study examines how sound and community are essential for understanding the Qur'an in Javanese Muslim settings, where recitation is essential. It investigates how Qur'anic soundscapes serve as a form of contextual tafsīr during communal rituals. The research was conducted in Yogyakarta, Kudus, and Surabaya from February to June 2025. This study employs participant observation and informal interviews to examine Qur'anic recitation within communal gatherings, including pengajian wetonan, tahlilan, and slametan. The findings show that sound serves as an embodied hermeneutics, influenced by emotional resonance and Javanese values such as rukun (harmony) and unggah-ungguh (respect). Kyais and pesantren communities are key in mediating these interpretations. This work contributes to contextual Qur'anic studies by framing listening as a mode of exegesis that encompasses sonic, affective, and communal dimensions of Javanese Islam.

Abstract

This study investigates the legality, socio-environmental implications, and policy relevance of imported second-hand clothing (thrifting import) using an integrative theoretical framework that explicitly combines ecotheology, fiqh sosial Kiai Sahal Mahfudh, and fiqh muamalah. The research addresses the central problem of how thrifting imports intersect with Islamic legal norms, sustainability ethics, and state regulations amidst rising concerns over waste, illegal trade, and threats to local industries. Using qualitative library research supported by hermeneutic and content analysis methods, this study examines classical and contemporary fiqh sources, Qur'anic exegesis on muamalah, literature on circular economy and sustainable consumption, as well as regulatory documents and statistical reports. The findings show that thrifting import does not fulfill key requirements of a valid sale (ma‘qūd ‘alayh), contains elements of gharar and bāṭil, contributes to ecosystem degradation, and disrupts the textile industry. The study also formulates policy implications by proposing a maqāṣid-oriented regulatory design, including empowerment strategies for affected small traders, strengthening domestic industry, and environmental sustainability measures. These recommendations highlight the importance of integrating Islamic legal ethics with national economic and ecological policies.

Abstract

This comparative study analyzes the relevance of the methodology of the interpretation of two Kalimantan scholars, Sheikh Muhammad Arsyad al-Banjari (pre-modern) and Muhammad Basiuni Imran(transitional era), with the framework of muhammadiyah interpretation (modern), focusing on two problem formulations: (1) the intellectual relationship and methodological relevance between the three, and (2) the relevance of their interpretation methods to the development of religion in Kalimantan. With a qualitative method based on literature studies and content analysis, this study finds that there is an intellectual common thread in the spirit of tajdid, the use of rationality, and contextualization, but with fundamental differences in the institutional model in which Muhammadiyah has succeeded in building a sustainable collective model, in contrast to the individual model of the two ulama. The implications of this research offer a historical perspective for the development of a contextual and moderate Indonesian Islamic discourse, as well as conclude that the thoughts of the two scholars have a deep compatibility with Muhammadiyah, whose excellence lies in the ability to institutionalize the intellectual heritage adaptively.

Abstract

The protection of women's dignity from baseless accusations remains critical from classical to modern times. This study examines Q.S. An-Nur verses 6-9 concerning li'an using Fazlur Rahman's double movement hermeneutic to uncover ethical principles protecting women's dignity actualized in contemporary contexts. This research aims to analyze Fazlur Rahman's hermeneutic framework, examine classical mufassir interpretations of li'an, and contextualize women's dignity protection through the double movement perspective. Through qualitative literature review, this study employs two movements: understanding the 7th-century patriarchal Arab context and extracting universal moral values for modern challenges. Findings reveal a revolutionary divine intervention, transforming women from accused objects to active legal subjects with equal rights. Five implicit principles emerge: dignity protection ('ird), procedural justice, defamation prevention, nasab protection, and disgrace covering (sitr). These principles address contemporary issues including digital defamation, intimate content distribution, and social media slander through strengthening presumption of innocence, guaranteeing defense rights, protecting privacy, and imposing strict sanctions against false accusations. This research advances ethical Qur'anic interpretation methodology, formulates five previously unarticulated ethical principles, and provides a concrete framework for protecting women's dignity in the digital era, affirming the Qur'an's responsive ethical paradigm across time.

Abstract

This study examines Ali al-Sayis's stance toward the Seven Qira'at in Tafsir ayat al-Ahkam, with a focus on methodological analysis and its implications for the interpretation of Islamic legal verses. The primary issue addressed is the lack of in-depth research on how Ali al-Sayis integrates the variant readings of the Seven Qira'at into the process of legal derivation (istinbaṭ al-ahkam), despite the significant potential of qira'at in shaping the meaning of legal verses. The study aims to critically assess Ali al-Sayis's approach and methodology in responding to the Seven Qira'at and to analyze their relevance and contribution to the construction of contemporary Islamic law. This research employs a qualitative–descriptive method using library research techniques, with Tafsir ayat al-Ahkam as the primary source and Manna' al-Qattan's principles of the Seven Qira'at as the analytical framework. The findings show that al-Sayis adopts a selective yet open approach toward sound qira'at, adhering to the criteria of linguistic eloquence (fasahah), conformity with the 'Uthmanic script (rasm 'Uthmani), and the authority of the transmission chain (sanad). This approach not only demonstrates al-Sayis's methodological depth but also offers important implications for the development of contemporary Qur'anic studies—particularly in positioning qira'at as linguistic instruments that enrich interpretation without violating textual authority. Consequently, the study reinforces the understanding that qira'at can play a significant role in reconstructing modern fiqh in a more adaptive, contextual, and responsive manner to the needs of the present era.

Abstract

This study examines the process of instilling the values of religious moderation through learning tafsir in Islamic boarding schools in Pekanbaru City, Riau Province. Departing from the role of Islamic boarding schools as educational institutions as well as centers for character formation, this study highlights that violent acts are still found that show the weak internalization of the value of moderation. Using a qualitative approach, this study found that Qur'anic verses with moderate nuances-such as Surah al-Fatihah (1, 3), al-Baqarah (11–13), al-Furqan (63), Fushilat (34), al-Hujurat (9), and al-Mujadilah (11)-were transmitted through the subject of tafsir. The results of the study show that the internalization of values is carried out through three stages: textual understanding of verses, strengthening values through discussions and case studies, and habituation of behavior in the life of Islamic boarding schools. However, there are variations in implementation between Islamic boarding schools; Some have applied contextual and participatory approaches, while others still use textual lecture methods that lack critical reflection. This study has limitations on limited area coverage and no long-term observations. Nevertheless, these findings provide important implications for the development of a more contextual and effective interpretation pedagogy in building a moderate culture in the Islamic boarding school environment.

Abstract

This study examines the function of the Rateb Siribee tradition as a spiritual rehabilitation model for former drug addicts in Aceh, addressing the limitations of conventional recovery programs that primarily emphasize medical and psychological treatment. Although formal rehabilitation initiatives have been widely implemented, many former users continue to experience social stigma, emotional distress, and susceptibility to relapse upon reentering their communities. Existing research has largely focused on medical and psychological interventions, while studies investigating local spiritual traditions particularly Rateb Siribee as a structured rehabilitation model remain scarce. Scholarship on Rateb Siribee itself predominantly highlights its theological and socio-cultural dimensions, leaving a clear gap regarding its relevance to addiction recovery. To address this gap, the present study aims to: (1) identify the underlying reasons for utilizing Rateb Siribee as a rehabilitation medium; (2) describe its ritual implementation among former addicts; and (3) analyze the spiritual, psychological, and social meanings constructed by participants through their engagement in this tradition. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving religious leaders, mentors, and former addicts in Meulaboh. The findings reveal that Rateb Siribee supports a holistic recovery process through three interrelated forms of meaning-making: strengthening spiritual awareness inspired by QS. Ar-Ra'd: 28; enhancing psychological resilience by improving emotional regulation and reducing anxiety; and fostering social reintegration through acceptance within the dhikr community. Collectively, these experiences cultivate motivation, self-discipline, and a renewed sense of belonging. The study concludes that Rateb Siribee offers a culturally rooted and humanistic rehabilitation model that complements existing approaches and contributes to the development of Islamic-based recovery strategies in Aceh.

Abstract

Studies of the sun in Qur'anic scholarship have largely been fragmented and reductionist, focusing mainly on astronomical calculations or physical characteristics while neglecting the broader influence of sunlight on living beings and its theological significance. Existing research often treats the sun as a cosmic object or a temporal marker, without integrating classical Qur'anic exegesis with contemporary scientific knowledge. This condition reveals an epistemological gap between traditional tafsīr studies and modern scientific discourse, particularly within thematic Qur'anic interpretation rooted in the intellectual legacy of Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī. This study aims to examine the Qur'anic concept of sunlight through the exegetical framework of Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, analyze its influence on humans, animals, and plants, and explore the divine wisdom behind its creation by engaging with modern scientific perspectives. Methodologically, this research employs a qualitative library-based design using a thematic (tafsīr mawdhū‘ī) approach combined with descriptive-analytical analysis. The primary source is al-Rāzī's Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb, which is critically contextualized with contemporary scientific literature in ecology, health sciences, and natural sciences. The findings indicate that al-Rāzī conceptualizes sunlight not merely as a physical source of illumination, but as a multidimensional divine sign. Sunlight functions as a source of life energy, a regulator of biological rhythms, a determinant of time, a contributor to human health, a driver of animal ecosystems, and a fundamental factor in photosynthesis and plant growth. These insights demonstrate a strong conceptual resonance between al-Rāzī's rational-philosophical exegesis and modern scientific principles, despite differing epistemological foundations. At the global level, this study contributes to strengthening religion-science dialogue, promoting ecological consciousness, supporting environmental sustainability, and advancing a holistic ethical framework for understanding the interconnected relationship between humanity, nature, and the Divine.
