Abstract

This study explores the stereotyping practices faced by Black women in the film Hidden Figures (2016), focusing on the lived experiences of three central characters—Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson. Using feminist literary criticism and the "reading as a woman" approach, the research investigates how these women navigated and overcame institutionalized racial and gender discrimination at NASA during the 1960s. The findings indicate that prevailing stereotypes—such as assumptions of intellectual inferiority, incompetence, and submissiveness—were instrumental in marginalizing Black women within scientific spaces. However, through persistent effort, exceptional intelligence, and professional integrity, these women challenged and ultimately dismantled such stereotypes. Their success not only contributed to key space missions but also reshaped the dominant narrative around race and gender in science and technology. The study connects these fictionalized portrayals with real historical events, informed by stereotype theory, intersectionality, and existing scholarly literature. By doing so, the analysis underscores the importance of inclusive representation in media and its role in social awareness and change. In conclusion, Hidden Figures serves as a powerful narrative that reclaims Black women’s agency in history and affirms their rightful place in the scientific community.

Abstract

Idioms are fixed combinations of words whose meanings cannot be interpreted literally, making them difficult to translate without prior familiarity. This study aims to analyze the translation difficulties faced by mining engineering students in translating idiomatic expressions from English to Indonesian. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques. The findings reveal that students encounter several challenges in the translation process. These include difficulties in identifying idioms, conveying equivalent meanings, selecting appropriate translation strategies, finding idioms with equivalent meanings, and locating idioms with equivalent structures and meanings. Among these, the greatest difficulty lies in identifying idioms. Out of a total population of 221 students, 61 students (approximately 27.6%) reported challenges in recognizing idiomatic expressions. Despite this, when students are familiar with certain idioms, they tend to translate them accurately and are even confident in using them in daily conversations. This suggests that familiarity with idiomatic expressions significantly influences translation accuracy. Therefore, it is essential to expose students to idiomatic expressions through various contexts and practices to improve their comprehension and translation skills. The study concludes that enhancing students’ exposure and understanding of idioms can reduce difficulties in translation and improve their overall translation competence.

Abstract

One vital factor in designing earthquake-resistant structures is the torsional moment generated by eccentricity, or the distance between the center of mass and the center of rigidity. Thus, the eccentricity value needs to be minimized to reduce the resulting torsion. This study aimed to analyze the effect of variations in staircase placement on eccentricity, using the Inpatient Building at RSUD (Regional General Hospital) Dr. Hasri Ainun Habibie, Gorontalo, as a case study. Modeling was performed on seven variations of stair placement, with placement 1 representing the existing condition using shear walls. The shear walls were then removed to assess the structural effectiveness of the stair placement changes. The analysis results indicated that even without shear walls, eccentricity values were lower than those obtained for placement 1 (the existing), namely for placements 6 and 7. The smallest eccentricity value was discovered in placement 7 with a value of 0.76%, where the stairs were symmetrical about the X and Y axes. Conversely, the largest eccentricity value was discovered in placement 4 with a value of 10.55%, where the stairs were positioned close together. These differences confirmed that the staircase placement configuration significantly affected the building’s eccentricity.

Abstract

The Domestic Component Level (TKDN) policy plays a crucial role in enhancing national industrial competitiveness, reducing import dependency, and stimulating economic growth in Indonesia. This study analyzes the TKDN implementation in the construction project of the Technical Implementation Unit of the State Civil Service Agency (UPT BKN) Gorontalo to evaluate the contribution of local materials, labor, and equipment to project costs. This research adopts a quantitative descriptive approach by collecting secondary data from project documents, including material specifications, unit price analyses (AHSP), and budget plans. The TKDN calculation follows Regulation of the Ministry of Industry No. 16/M-IND/PER/2/2011, focusing on three key components: materials, labor, and equipment. The findings indicate that the project achieved a TKDN value of 55.57%, exceeding the government’s minimum requirement of 25%. Local materials such as mortar, sand, and lightweight bricks, along with the full engagement of Indonesian workers (100% TKDN), significantly contributed to this outcome. However, imported heavy equipment and mechanical components remain a challenge. The study highlights that optimizing domestic products and workforce utilization in construction projects effectively strengthens national industrial independence. Recommendations include simplifying TKDN certification, increasing local production capacity, and fostering technology transfer through international collaboration.

Abstract

Learning interest is one of the internal factors that determines students’ academic success. In the context of Hydrologic Engineering courses, which require analytical understanding, strong learning motivation is needed to participate in learning optimally. This research was conducted due to students' low learning outcomes, even though they regularly attended lectures. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of learning interest on student learning outcomes in the hydrologic engineering course in the Civil Engineering Study Program, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. This quantitative research, with an ex post facto approach, used all students (84 people) who had taken the hydrologic engineering course as a population and a sample (total sampling technique). Data were collected through learning interest questionnaires and academic score documentation, then analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. Based on the analysis, there was a significant relationship between learning interest and student learning outcomes. Students with a high interest in learning tend to get better academic grades. Aspects of interest, attention, and active involvement in learning have been shown to play an essential role in academic achievement. Thus, it is recommended to implement interactive and contextual learning methods and utilize supporting facilities, such as simulation software and real-life case studies, to improve student motivation and learning outcomes.

Abstract

Lemon cichlid fish has the Latin name (Neolamprologus leleupi) is one of the ornamental fish species with a promising level of potential. The brightness of the color of lemon cichlid fish (Neolamprologus leleupi) is one of the important factors that must be considered by lemon cichlid fish farmers. This is because the brighter the color of the lemon cichlid fish, the higher the selling price, thus affecting the income of lemon cichlid fish farmers. Efforts to increase the brightness of the color of the fish can be done by adding carotenoids derived from marigold flowers (Tagetes erecta) which are mixed into the feed. The use of marigold flower flour (Tagetes erecta) in feed to improve the color of lemon cichlid fish has not been widely carried out, so this study was conducted. This study aims to determine the addition of marigold flower flour to fish feed can provide a real effect. The method used in this study is an experimental method with a completely randomized design (CRD). The main treatment carried out was the provision of marigold flower flour with different doses, namely: 1%, 2%, 3% and one control treatment (without the provision of marigold flower flour). The addition of Marigold flower flour did not give any significant effect based on the results obtained.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the potential of Ageratum conyzoides (babadotan) extract in controlling Colletotrichum sp., the causative agent of anthracnose in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.). The experiment was conducted using a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with six treatments: negative control (F0), positive control inoculated with Colletotrichum sp. without treatment (F1), synthetic fungicide (F2), and babadotan extract at concentrations of 40% (F3), 60% (F4), and 80% (F5), with three replications each. Observed parameters included incubation period, disease incidence, and disease intensity. The results showed that treatments F4 and F5 (60% and 80% concentrations) were the most effective in suppressing the disease. These treatments extended the incubation period to 13.17 and 13.58 days, respectively. Furthermore, the lowest disease incidence was recorded in F4 (1.39% at 58 days after planting and 9.72% at 62 days) and in F5 (0% at 58 days and 2.08% at 62 days). Disease intensity also decreased with increasing extract concentration. These findings suggest that babadotan extract, particularly at 60% and 80% concentrations, has strong potential as a natural alternative to synthetic fungicides in controlling anthracnose disease caused by Colletotrichum sp. in eggplant cultivation.

Abstract

In the era of globalization, product quality plays a crucial role in meeting consumer demands and maintaining a company's competitiveness. This study aims to identify the causes of product defects and provide improvement recommendations in the production process of Alfitra Bakery using the Six Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) methodology combined with Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA). The research was conducted through field observations and interviews at Alfitra Bakery, Gorontalo, focusing on two dominant types of defects: scorched (burnt) bread and under-expanded bread. The scorched defect was found to have a Risk Priority Number (RPN) of 490, while the under-expansion defect had an RPN of 210. The main factors contributing to scorched bread include prolonged baking time, inaccurate monitoring by workers, and manual calculation of baking time. Recommended improvements involve increasing employee supervision during baking, conducting regular briefings before production, and installing automatic timers to control baking time. Meanwhile, under-expanded bread was caused by inadequate yeast in the dough, poor employee precision, excessive fermentation time, and unstable oven temperature. Recommendations for improvement include using a measuring tool for yeast dosage, improving fermentation time management, employee training, and using ovens with automated temperature control systems. These recommendations aim to reduce defect rates and improve product quality consistency. The integration of Six Sigma and FMEA proves effective in systematically identifying and resolving quality issues in the bakery industry.

Abstract

The rapid growth of population has significantly increased the demand for housing, leading to the acceleration of residential construction projects. In this context, the efficiency of project scheduling methods plays a critical role in ensuring timely delivery and optimal resource utilization. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of the Line of Balance (LoB) and the Precedence Diagram Method (PDM) in the construction of the Citra Agrindo III Housing project. Employing a descriptive approach and utilizing secondary data such as S-curves and project time schedules, the research provides a detailed analysis of each method’s strengths and limitations. The findings reveal that the PDM method results in a shorter project duration, completing construction in 119 days, which is 4 days faster than the LoB method, requiring 123 days. This indicates that PDM is more effective in projects where task dependencies and sequencing play a significant role, as it clearly maps the relationships between activities. On the other hand, LoB demonstrates its superiority in managing repetitive tasks, ensuring smoother resource allocation and workflow consistency across housing units. The results highlight that both methods possess distinct advantages depending on project characteristics. Thus, project managers are encouraged to select scheduling methods that align with the nature of the project to achieve greater efficiency in both time and cost management. This comparison contributes to the broader understanding of construction project management and provides practical insights for improving scheduling strategies in the residential sector.

Abstract

Material is one of the most crucial resources in the construction implementation process. However, the occurrence of material waste not only fails to contribute added value to the project scope but can also lead to significant financial losses for the project implementer. This study aims to analyze the factors that cause material waste in the construction project of UPT BKN Gorontalo. The research focuses on several contributing aspects, including design, procurement, handling, implementation, residuals, and other unexpected factors, as well as efforts to minimize material waste. A combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches was employed, involving field surveys, participatory observations, secondary data analysis, and the distribution of questionnaires to contractors and consultants directly involved in the project. The data were then processed using SPSS software to determine the significance and strength of the influence of each variable. The results showed that among the seven variables analyzed, three had a significant effect on material waste: handling (X3), implementation (X4), and other factors (X6). Meanwhile, variables such as design, procurement, residuals, and minimizing material waste did not show a statistically significant effect. Furthermore, the correlation analysis indicated that the variable "other factors" had the strongest relationship with material waste, followed by implementation and handling. The findings of this research are expected to serve as a reference for improving material management in future construction projects to reduce waste and enhance efficiency.
