Abstract

Design changes in construction projects often cause significant impacts on the cost, time and quality of work. This study aims to analyze the factors resulting from design changes that affect the construction project of the Maritime Integrated Laboratory Building, Gorontalo State University. This study uses a quantitative descriptive method with data collection through a questionnaire involving 13 respondents, consisting of contractors, consultants, and technical teams. Data were analyzed using the Relative Importance Index (RII) method to identify factors of design changes and their resolution actions. This study aims to analyze the factors and resolution actions of factors resulting from design changes that affect the cost, time and quality of the construction project of the Maritime Integrated Laboratory Building, Gorontalo State University. The results of the study indicate that project delays, daily target inconsistencies, and suboptimal work methods are the main factors that impact costs and quality. Proposed mitigation efforts include better risk management, improved communication between parties, and resource adjustments to minimize negative impacts. This study is expected to contribute to the management of construction projects, especially related to design change management.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of using the Riddles Technique in enhancing the English vocabulary of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 15 Kota Gorontalo. The study focuses on determining whether this technique can significantly improve students’ vocabulary mastery. The research was conducted using a pre-experimental method with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The population of this research consisted of all seventh-grade students, and the sample was class VII-1, comprising 20 students selected through purposive sampling. In the implementation phase, students were engaged in various vocabulary-based riddles during English lessons. These riddles were designed to stimulate students’ interest, challenge their thinking, and enhance their word retention. The pre-test was administered to assess the students’ initial vocabulary level, followed by a series of learning sessions using the Riddles Technique, and concluded with a post-test. The results indicated a significant improvement in students’ vocabulary scores. The mean score increased from 43 in the pre-test to 71 in the post-test. Furthermore, statistical analysis revealed that the significance value was 0.000, which is less than the standard alpha level of 0.05. This confirms that the alternative hypothesis (H₁) is accepted, indicating a significant effect of the Riddles Technique on vocabulary enhancement. In conclusion, the Riddles Technique proves to be an effective and engaging method for improving students’ English vocabulary. It is recommended for English language teachers as an innovative strategy to increase students’ participation and vocabulary acquisition.

Abstract

A project is a series of activities aimed at achieving specific objectives within limited time, resources, and constraints. In complex construction projects, such as dam and bridge construction, proper planning, execution, control, and monitoring are crucial to ensure timely completion. Delays in such projects can lead to increased costs and missed targets. This study focuses on the time acceleration of the Owata Bridge construction, which is part of the Bolango Ulu Dam Package III Project. The method used in this research is the crashing method, a project management technique used to shorten project duration at the lowest possible cost. The analysis was carried out on the foundation and abutment work components of the bridge. Based on the crashing analysis through the addition of workforce on critical path activities, the total project duration was successfully reduced by 17 days or 9.39%, from an initial duration of 181 days to 164 days. However, this acceleration led to an increase in total project cost from Rp. 4,125,666,382.00 to Rp. 4,153,661,940.15, resulting in a cost difference of Rp. 27,995,558.15, or an increase of approximately 0.7%. These findings indicate that time efficiency can be achieved with minimal cost implications using the crashing method. This research contributes to better project planning and decision-making in infrastructure development, especially in projects with tight deadlines and significant social-economic impacts.

Abstract

Language plays a crucial role in digital communication, and platforms like Instagram serve as key spaces for self-expression. This study investigates graphological deviations in Instagram captions, focusing on typography, spelling and grammar, and punctuation to understand their impact on written communication in social media. This research adopted a qualitative descriptive approach, analyzing captions from English Language Education Department students' Instagram accounts to identify and categorize graphological deviations. Data collection involved selecting captions with deviations in spelling, punctuation, and typography, followed by analysis using theories from Verdonk (2002) and Simpson (2004). The findings reveal that graphological deviations are intentionally employed to enhance aesthetics, convey emotions, and establish a relaxed, informal tone. Three main categories emerged: (1) Spelling and Grammar, which featured informal abbreviations and creative word formations and accounted for 10 instances; (2) Punctuation, where unconventional uses of quotation marks, ellipses, and dashes added emphasis and emotional depth, with 7 instances identified and (3) Typography, where unique fonts, emojis, and text layouts enhanced visual appeal, with 4 instances recorded. While such deviations may reduce clarity and professionalism, they significantly shape message reception in social media contexts. The study concludes that graphological deviations are a stylistic choice prioritizing aesthetics and emotional engagement over linguistic norms. Future research can explore their visual and emotional impact, typographic effectiveness, and multilingual adaptations in digital media.

Abstract

Satire is a form of literary device that mock the foolishness of individual, group or even a society Its goal is to highlight flaws or foolishness in the hope that it will encourage improvement. This study aims to analyzes the use of satire in Peter Farrelly’s film Green Book, focusing on the types of satire employed and their communicative functions. Utilizing M.H. Abrams’ classification of satire (Horatian, Juvenalian, Menippean), the research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach to examine dialogues from the movie script. The analysis centers on the interactions between the main characters, to identify how satirical elements address themes of racism, social inequality, and cultural disparity. The findings reveal nineteen instances of satire: eight Horatian, characterized by humor and irony to critique societal norms gently; ten Juvenalian, employing direct and harsh criticism to confront racial injustices; and two Menippean, highlighting situational irony and mental attitudes. Tony Lip predominantly uses Juvenalian satire to challenge systemic racism, while Dr. Shirley employs Horatian satire to navigate cultural tensions subtly. Menippean satire, though less frequent, underscores contradictions in societal perceptions. This research contributes to linguistic studies by expanding the understanding of satire’s role in cinematic discourse, particularly in addressing complex social issues. It highlights the efficacy of satire as a tool for social critique, offering insights into how different satirical styles reflect characters’ backgrounds and societal dynamics. The study provides a foundation for future interdisciplinary research on satire in media, emphasizing its relevance in contemporary cultural and political contexts.

Abstract

Many problems may arise during the execution of construction projects as a consequence of risks, and these problems may lead to substandard performance, substandard quality, and substandard work results. Knowing how risk management is applied to construction projects and what technical risk factors occur most frequently during the execution of work in the field are the main objectives of this study. The spillway construction of the Bulango Ulu dam project is the subject of this research, which aims to identify, analyze, and respond to potential risks. Consultants, supervision contractors, and construction management are the research subjects who measure risk variables and take preventive measures. Assessing risk variables through surveys and weighing the relative importance of various activities according to the Index of Relative Importance (IKR). After reviewing the data, we have identified five risk factor variables that significantly impact the Bulango Ulu dam spillway project. These factors include incorrect dimensioning (length, width, and height), incorrect time estimation, out-of-specification concrete quality, use of incorrect execution methods, and errors in reinforcement (iron dimensions, iron spacing, and iron quality).

Abstract

The implementation of infrastructure development in Indonesia has grown rapidly in recent years, particularly in the context of its status as a developing country. One major project receiving attention in Gorontalo Province is the construction of the Bulango Ulu Dam. However, this project has faced delays in completion, which necessitates an in-depth analysis to optimize both time and cost. This study aims to analyze the project’s work network to identify the critical path and evaluate time and cost efficiency through the application of a crash program using additional overtime hours. The research was conducted at several project locations: Tulova Village, Owata Village, and Mongiilo Village in Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province. The study employed the crash program method and utilized Microsoft Project and Microsoft Excel for data processing. These tools supported the identification of critical tasks and the analysis of overtime productivity, crash duration, cost slope, and post-crash program time and cost efficiency. The analysis revealed that critical tasks in the Bulango Ulu Dam construction include drilling and grouting, stockpile work, dam top miscellaneous work, cleaning, and jetty trash boom installation. Time efficiency resulting from overtime additions was found to be: 10% (1 hour), 16.90% (2 hours), 22.62% (3 hours), 26.67% (4 hours), and 30% (5 hours). Meanwhile, cost efficiency peaked at 2.58% with 4 hours of overtime. These findings suggest that the optimal scenario for time and cost efficiency in hoarding work is achieved by adding 4 hours of overtime.

Abstract

Heavy equipment plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and timely execution of construction projects. Inaccurate analysis of heavy equipment productivity and poor selection of equipment can lead to project delays and cost inefficiencies. This study aims to analyze the productivity of heavy equipment used in the main embankment work of the Bulango Ulu Dam, determine the estimated duration of work completion, and evaluate alternative efficiency strategies. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with a focus on excavators and dump trucks used in four categories of embankment excavation work: core, fine filter, coarse filter, and rock. The results show that the productivity of excavators in core embankment excavation reached 790.65 m³/hour, with a work duration of 69 days, while dump trucks recorded 820.50 m³/hour with 66 days of work. For fine filter embankment excavation, excavators achieved 779.24 m³/hour (32 days), and dump trucks 530.40 m³/hour (48 days). In the coarse filter embankment excavation, excavator productivity remained at 779.24 m³/hour (34 days), while dump trucks reached 511.20 m³/hour (52 days). In rock embankment excavation, excavator productivity was 898.00 m³/hour (394 days), and dump trucks 561.20 m³/hour (631 days). Based on the efficiency comparison, Alternative 2 is recommended as it provides a significant reduction in project duration with a relatively minimal cost increase compared to Alternative 1. These findings highlight the importance of accurate equipment planning to optimize project performance in terms of time and cost.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze feminist values in the film Suffragette (2015) through the lens of liberal feminism using Mary Wollstonecraft’s theory. Employing a qualitative method, the researcher examines dialogues, character actions, and the film’s script to interpret the representation of women's roles, resistance, and struggle for equality in a patriarchal society. The study uses a sociology of literature approach, positioning the film as a reflection of historical and socio-cultural realities. The analysis focuses on how liberal feminist ideals—particularly Equal Liberty, Gender Justice, and Mono-Androgyny—are embedded in the narrative and character development. From 15 selected scenes, 6 reflect Equal Liberty, showing the characters’ demands for equal political rights and participation. Seven scenes demonstrate Gender Justice, highlighting women's fight against discrimination in wages, work, and societal norms. Two scenes portray Mono-Androgyny, depicting women who transcend traditional gender roles and assert their autonomy. The findings suggest that Suffragette effectively visualizes the core principles of liberal feminism, especially those advocated by Wollstonecraft, by showing women's pursuit of fairness, independence, and legal recognition. This research offers a fresh perspective on feminist film analysis and underscores the continuing relevance of liberal feminist values in both historical and contemporary contexts.

Abstract

Reinforcement steel is one of the most expensive materials in building construction projects, accounting for approximately 20%-25% of the total cost. Poor management of this material can lead to significant finansial losses. This research aims to analye the dominant diameters of reinforcement steel that contribute to material waste, estimate the cost of the resulting waste, and identify the factors causing reinforcement steel waste. The research utilized primary data obtained through observation and direct interviews with project implementers, as well as secondary data in the form of shop drawings and budget plans (RAB) to calculate and analyze the percentage of reinforcement steel material waste. The results indicate that the dominant reinforcement steel diameters constributing to material waste based on cost estimation using the Pareto diagram are ribbed steel bars with 19 mm, 16 mm, and 13 mm diameters. The total estimated cost factor contributing to the waste is miscalculation in the estimation of reinforcement volume.
