Abstract

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common disorder defined by recurrent episodes of upper airway obstruction during sleep, resulting in intermittent hypoxia, hypercapnia, and disrupted sleep patterns. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) encounter increased risks of postoperative complications in surgical contexts, such as respiratory problems, cardiovascular incidents, and extended recovery durations. The perioperative management of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) poses distinct challenges for anesthesiologists and surgeons, primarily due to risks of airway obstruction, heightened opioid sensitivity, and associated comorbidities like hypertension and obesity. Postoperative complications are significant, as the sedative effects of anesthesia and analgesics heighten airway collapsibility, thereby increasing the risk of hypoxemia and apneic events. This review examines the range of postoperative complications linked to obstructive sleep apnea, emphasizing respiratory issues, cardiovascular instability, and the likelihood of extended hospitalization. It also delineates contemporary strategies for the perioperative management of patients with obstructive sleep apnea, encompassing preoperative screening, intraoperative monitoring, and postoperative care. The role of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, opioid-sparing analgesic techniques, and the necessity for individualized anesthesia plans to reduce risks is emphasized. Comprehending these management strategies is crucial for enhancing patient outcomes and decreasing the occurrence of postoperative complications in individuals with OSA.

Abstract

Stem cell therapy has shown great potential in regenerating neurons in the brain, offering hope for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by progressive neuronal atrophy. These therapies target key mechanisms of neuronal loss, including protein aggregation, oxidative stress, and inflammation, while promoting neuroprotection through neurogenesis and angiogenesis. The development of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) has addressed challenges related to immune rejection and ethical concerns associated with the use of embryonic stem cells. Despite advancements, challenges such as immune responses, tumorigenesis risks, and efficient delivery methods remain. Future research should focus on optimizing cell sources, improving targeted delivery systems, and exploring combination therapies to enhance treatment efficacy and safety. With successful integration, stem cell therapy has the potential to revolutionize the management of neurodegenerative diseases, ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

Abstract

The inherited AnWj-negative blood group phenotype is caused by homozygosity for a deletion in MAL, encoding Myelin and lymphocyte protein. Mal protein is expressed on red blood cell membranes of AnWj-positive, but not AnWj-negative, individuals. The 50-year-old enigma has been resolved with the discovery of a new blood group, MAL. Researchers from the University of Bristol, NHSBT's International Blood type Reference Laboratory (IBGRL), and NHS Blood and Transplant (Bristol) have determined the genetic foundation of the previously reported but enigmatic AnWj blood type antigen. The results make it possible to identify and treat rare patients who do not have this blood group. This mini review highlights on recent discovery of MAL blood group system after 50 years , to avoid transfusion reactions in the patients.

Abstract

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is a critical condition that significantly impacts both the physical and psychological well-being of patients, often leading to extended hospital stays and increased healthcare costs. This review explores the role of Occupational Therapy (OT) in managing AKI patients, particularly in enhancing functional outcomes and psychological health. The review synthesizes findings from 21 peer-reviewed studies published between 2019 and 2024, focusing on OT interventions for adult AKI patients. Results indicate that OT improves functional independence, as measured by ADL assessments, and enhances psychosocial outcomes by reducing anxiety and boosting self-management skills. Additionally, OT's role in interdisciplinary team approaches is highlighted, improving communication and individualized care. Despite the promising findings, the review also identifies limitations, such as small sample sizes and varying intervention methods. The paper concludes by advocating for more large-scale studies to establish evidence-based protocols for OT in AKI rehabilitation.
