Abstract

Carbonated soft drinks (CSDs), widely consumed globally, have been linked to numerous health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and including ocular complications. The composition of these beverages, including high sugar content and additives, contributes to oxidative stress in ocular tissues. Elevated glucose levels from excessive sugar intake may damage the ocular surface’s glycocalyx, weakening and increasing susceptibility to infections. CSDs also contribute to obesity and type 2 diabetes, both of which are risk factors for significant eye diseases like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and cataracts. While occasional consumption of CSDs may not have severe consequences, excessive intake poses long-term risks for both systemic and ocular health. The review calls for increased awareness about these potential risks, emphasizing the need for further research specifically targeting the direct effects of CSDs on the eyes. Public health campaigns should consider incorporating information on the ocular impacts of sugary drink consumption alongside well-known risks to general health, thereby encouraging healthier lifestyle choices to protect vision

Abstract

Nipah virus (NiV), a highly pathogenic zoonotic virus belonging to the Paramyxoviridae family and Henipavirus genus, was first identified during an outbreak in Malaysia in 1998-1999 and has since been reported in South and Southeast Asia, primarily in Bangladesh and India. The virus is transmitted through zoonotic spillover from animal reservoirs, particularly fruit bats (Pteropus species), as well as human-to-human transmission. Pigs can become infected by consuming fruits contaminated by infected bats, and humans can contract the virus through contact with infected pigs or bats. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the transmission dynamics of Nipah virus, emphasizing zoonotic spillover, direct contact with infected animals, and human-to-human transmission during outbreaks. Understanding these transmission pathways is essential for developing effective control and prevention strategies. NiV outbreaks have occurred in Malaysia, Singapore, Bangladesh, India, and the Philippines, often resulting in severe respiratory and neurological diseases with high mortality rates in both humans and pigs. Diagnosis of Nipah virus infection involves various techniques, including serological, molecular, virological, and immunohistochemistry methods. The potential for human-to-human transmission poses a significant public health concern, highlighting the need for improved diagnostic and surveillance measures..

Abstract

Background: Adolescence is characterized by significant biological changes, including menarche among female adolescents. Inadequate knowledge of menstrual and reproductive hygiene may increase the risk of reproductive tract infections (RTIs). Therefore, improving reproductive health knowledge is essential to promote healthy hygiene behaviors among adolescent girls. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between reproductive health knowledge and reproductive organ hygiene practices among female adolescents at Van Duynhoven Senior High School, Saribudolok. Methods: This study employed a quantitative research design with a cross-sectional correlational approach. A total of 86 female students were selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. Univariate analysis was used to describe respondents' characteristics, while the relationship between variables was analyzed using the Chi-square test with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The findings showed that the majority of respondents had good reproductive health knowledge (55.8%) and demonstrated positive reproductive organ hygiene practices (60.5%). Bivariate analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between reproductive health knowledge and reproductive organ hygiene practices (p = 0.002; α < 0.05). These findings indicate that better reproductive health knowledge is associated with more positive hygiene practices among female adolescents. Conclusion: Reproductive health knowledge is significantly associated with reproductive organ hygiene practices among female adolescents. A comprehensive understanding of reproductive health contributes positively to the development of adaptive and healthy hygiene behaviors. Abstract

Background: Three-month injectable contraception is one of the most widely used contraceptive methods in Indonesia due to its practicality and effectiveness. However, long-term use is often associated with weight gain, which may affect women's physical, psychological, and social well-being, as well as the continuation of contraceptive use. Objective: This study aimed to explore the experiences and perceptions of women using three-month injectable contraception regarding weight gain in the working area of Bahu Public Health Center, Malalayang District, Manado City. Methods: This study employed a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 12 participants selected using purposive sampling. The number of participants was determined based on the principle of data saturation. Data were analyzed to identify themes related to participants’ experiences and perceptions of weight gain during the use of three-month injectable contraception. Results: The findings revealed that most participants experienced weight gain after using three-month injectable contraception. The increase in body weight affected their physical activities, caused feelings of discomfort, reduced self-confidence, and influenced social interactions. Despite these challenges, the majority of participants chose to continue using injectable contraception because they perceived it as practical, effective, and suitable for their family planning needs. Conclusion: Weight gain is a common experience among users of three-month injectable contraception and has physical, psychological, and social impacts. Nevertheless, the perceived benefits of this contraceptive method remain the primary factor supporting its continued use. Suggestion: Healthcare providers are encouraged to strengthen counseling regarding the potential side effects of three-month injectable contraception, provide education on weight management strategies, and conduct regular weight monitoring to enhance users’ comfort, satisfaction, and adherence to contraceptive use.

Abstract

Background: Caring is a fundamental value in nursing practice that contributes to the quality of patient care and satisfaction. The implementation of caring practices among nurses can be influenced by various factors, including the supervisory role of head nurses. Effective supervision is expected to support not only technical performance but also the development of caring behaviors in daily nursing practice. Objective: This study aimed to explore staff nurses’ experiences of head nurse supervision in supporting the implementation of caring practices at Kotamobagu Regional Hospital. Methods: This study employed a qualitative research design with a descriptive phenomenological approach. The study was conducted in the Melati and Tuitan inpatient wards of Kotamobagu Regional Hospital. Eight staff nurses (IF1–IF8) were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using content analysis. Results: The findings revealed three major themes: (1) supervision practices as routine managerial control focused on task completion and procedural compliance, indicating that supervision had not fully supported the relational aspects of nursing care; (2) limited reinforcement of caring behaviors during supervision, reflected in the minimal emphasis on therapeutic communication and emotional support; and (3) nurses’ dependence on supervisory direction in implementing caring practices, suggesting that caring behaviors had not yet been fully internalized as intrinsic professional values. These findings indicate that supervision remains predominantly task-oriented rather than caring-oriented. Conclusion: Head nurse supervision plays an important role in supporting nursing practice; however, current supervision is primarily focused on managerial and technical aspects. Caring values have not been consistently emphasized, resulting in limited reinforcement of caring behaviors among staff nurses. A more holistic supervisory approach is needed to integrate caring values into everyday nursing practice. Suggestion: Healthcare institutions and nursing managers should reorient supervisory practices by incorporating caring principles, therapeutic communication, reflective feedback, and emotional support into routine supervision activities. Continuous training and evaluation of supervisory competencies are also recommended to strengthen the integration of caring values within professional nursing practice.
