Abstract

Education could be considered as one of the basic pillars to determine the performance indicator of a respective region. Year of schooling is one of the education indexes, which becomes the government's target in the 9-year compulsory education program. This index illustrates the importance of knowledge and higher-level skills. Meanwhile, West Papua Province as one of the youngest provinces in Indonesia is challenged to improve the quality of human resources, particularly in the underdeveloped regions. Therefore, it is important to identify the variables which influence the years of schooling in the West Papua province. Statistically, the type of data such as length of time is frequently used to be the survival analysis. Nevertheless, the distribution patternof the response variables is difficult to be analyzed. For that reason, this study applied mixture model on years of schooling. Mixture model estimation leads to the complex statistical problems with a number of parameters. Bayesian methods accomplish the estimation through the simulation process of Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). The survival mixture model was formed based on the status of county. Rural areas were evidenced to give the contribution of years of schooling distribution more than urban area up to 59.87 percent. The opportunity to obtain formal education at least to junior high school in urban areas was greater than rural area had, yet it went down faster in year 12-th or in senior high school level. In general, the factors which influenced the years of schooling in urban and rural areas turned out to be different.

Abstract

One of the problems in data classification is imbalanced data. In two-class classification, imbalance problem occurs where one of the two classes has more samples than another class. In such situation, most of the classifier will be biased towards the major class, while the minor class will be subordinated eventually which leads to inaccurate classification. Therefore, a method to classify the imbalanced data is required. Rare Event Weighted Logistic Regression (RE-WLR) which is developed by Maalouf and Siddiqi is a method of classification applied to large imbalanced data and rare event. This study showed the review of RE-WLR for the classification of imbalanced data. It explicated the steps to obtain the estimator specifically, particularly for IRLS. RE-WLR is a combination of Logistic Regression (LR) rare events corrections and Truncated Regularized Iteratively Re-weighted Least Squares (TR-IRLS). Rare event correction in LR is applied to Weighted Logistic Regression (WLR). Regularization was added to reduce over-fitting. The estimation of ߚ is performed by using the method of maximum likelihood (ML), while WLR maximum likelihood estimates (MLE) were obtained by using IRLS method of Newton-Raphson algorithm. In order to solve large optimization problems, Truncated-Newton method is applied.

Abstract

Employment becomes one of the most important focuses of development in Indonesia. Analysis of employment and its factors could be the consideration in making employment policies. Several studies of employment related to a particular economic sector have been carried out. For a comparison, this paper discussed the model of labor absorption with three economic sectors. The source of data was derived from all the provinces in Indonesia for five years. Spatial model was estimated with Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) for each year of observation. Moran’s I and LM test were used to identify the spatial dependency. SUR model was estimated with Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and General Least Square (GLS).The variables used to estimate labor absorption were the output and real wage. The resultindicated that the spatial dependency was significant particularly in the agricultural sector with a spatial error model. Meanwhile, labor absorption was significantly affected by the output and real wage for both OLS estimation and GLS estimation for SUR model. Service sector had the highest R2 value. UR model with GLS estimation was evidenced to be more efficient than OLS estimation, in addition, standard error of parameters using GLS estimation evenly was lower than OLS estimation.

Abstract

Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is a subclass of mobile ad hoc network (MANET), in which it is used to support intelligent transportation system. Generally, the main problem in VANET is in routing protocol. This is a challenging task due to the fact that moving object with certain direction and speed always changes the network topology quickly. Some routing protocols actually have been proposed to deal with routing complexity. In this paper we proposed new approach which was combining the existing routing protocol in order to reduce the dropping package in dynamic environment. By combining mobile infrastructure base routing (MIBR) and advertisement routing, the packet loss could be reduced. MIBR used certain type of vehicle on the road as the priority of routing hop. While, placing fixed wireless infrastructure in the roadside (RSU) would be helpful in case of traffic jam, since it could forward the package to the most far targeted vehicle when other vehicle hop experiences stuck.

Abstract

Inflation became an important component in the economy as an indicator of the increase in prices of goods and services. In addition to general inflation, there are also seven groups of inflation categorized based on expenditure. Inflation particularly in Indonesia is influenced by internal and external factors. These factors may effect inflation not only at a single point of time, but also at certain periods. Money supply is one factor strongly considered to influence inflation. Consequently, it is important to forecast inflation by involving money supply as input series. The effect of money supply on inflation was analyzed in this study. This research focused on hybrid method which is the combination between Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average with Exogenous Factor (ARIMAX) and Neural Network (NN). The resultsof hybrid method were compared to individual forecasting method, i.e. ARIMA and ARIMAX. The result indicated that hybrid ARIMAX-NN provided precise inflation prediction compared to ARIMA or ARIMAX method. Hybrid model can be an effective and efficient way to improve forecasting.

Abstract

The paper analyzed a creative teacher handling some variously problematic students in her classroom reflected in Freedom Writers movie. Based on the problem, the paper was aimed at analyzing ways that the creative teacher took to solve the students’ problems. The theoretical framework of the analysis was the Individual Psychological approach by Alfred Adler. Teacher has an important role in human life. As a teacher, he or she not only teaches but also educates the students. To teach means transforming the teacher’s knowledge to the students. Through interaction with students, a teacher gives them various materials of knowledge. The knowledge can be language, mathematics, biology, physics, history, and so on. Meanwhile, to educate means a teacher can educate the students about social norms, ethics, proper manner, morality and the like. To play their roles, teachers often face a lot of problems. The problems ranged from students’ personal problem, their environment problem, lack of facilities of teaching learning process, to their own private problem. Freedom Writers movie, in which the creation was inspired by a true story, delineates complex problems experienced by both the teacher and the students. The teacher, Erin Gruwell, faced her students who had various and complicated problems, which later motivated to find a solution for her students’ problem. Her students’ problem might be racial discrimination, social oppression by the dominant group, social injustice experienced by the marginalized group, and so on. With her creativity of teaching technique, Gruwell created some ways to understand their students’ private problem and found a wise way out of their problems.

Abstract

The research was an attempt to “describe” Poe’s perspective of beauty reflected in “Ligeia”, a short story. This study used American Studies theory that was the reconciliation of time (past, present, future), of space and of academic discipline that were philosophical, historical, and literary approaches. The literary approach used, in this case, was the expressive one. The method applied in this study was analytical descriptive that utilized library research and concentrated the attention on reference sources related to the topic discussed. The result of the study showed that romantic ideas influenced the American society. The most striking ones were the freedom, individualism and equality. Individualism and freedom made Poe’s literary works that in a way can be categorized as classic and in another way, romantic. They were different from the others. This study proved that Poe’s perspective of beauty was that the well designed poem or prose creates the pleasure of totality of beauty. Beauty is the sole legitimate province of the poem. The beauty must be able to elevate soul. It can be found from the contemplation of the beautiful. The study also showed that “Ligeia” reflects the beauty of knowledge.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to describe the current implementation of multicultural education in Indonesia and to describe the implementation of multicultural education in Indonesia in the future. This research was a qualitative research to understand a phenomenon in the social context naturally with the advanced process of interaction between researchers’ in-depth communication and the phenomenon. Subject of research was the researchers, while the research object was the Multicultural Education Implementation of current and forthcoming. The methods of data collection were interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis technique was interactive analysis techniques as disclosed by Miles and Huberman (1984: 23) which included four steps, namely, data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results showed that the implementation of multicultural education with a lot of experience irregularities included the dimensions of the multidimensional concept, the dimension of meaning, the content dimension, the cultural dimension, the dimension of primordialism, the egocentric dimensions, and the religious dimensions. It is expected that the future implementation of multicultural education should be improved both in quantity and quality. However, it will require a profound awareness from the Indonesian citizens that pluralism is a priceless investment. With the plurality, Indonesian people can be dynamic, creative, and innovative. Thus, the understanding should be introduced as early as possible that multicultural education can provide services to all students regardless of their socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, or ethnic background, race or culture, and equal chance to learn in school. Multicultural education was also based on the fact that students do not learn in a vacuum as their cultures influence them to learn in a certain way. The researchers concluded that nowadays, the implementation of multicultural education faced a complex problem, thus, the future implementation of multicultural education should be able to minimize the various forms of problems that currently appeared.

Abstract

Cholesterol is a soft, yellow, and fatty substance produced by the body, mainly in the liver. Every day, liver produces about 800 milligrams of cholesterol which is derived from animal products, seafood, milk, and dairy products. At normal levels, cholesterol is useful for health, because it is one of the essential fats required by the body for cell formation. Meanwhile, cholesterol levels are classified into three categories: normal, high, and low. The cholesterol levels can be affected by several factors that are sometimes not widely known by common people. The objective of this study was to determine the level of significance of each factor that affects cholesterol levels and to find the value of accuracy, precision and recall of the algorithms used in decision tree induction. The selection criterions used were the information gain, gini index and gain ratio to find the level of significance of the factors that affect cholesterol levels. Variables that affect cholesterol levels divided into four types, namely gender, age, history of smoking, and history of diabetes. The result showed that the most influence factors on cholesterol levels based on training data processed using three algorithms was the history of diabetes. Meanwhile, the highest accuracy was obtained by the information gain which was 56.14%. The recall values were distributed evenly for all three algorithms, it indicated the equality of those three algorithms. The information gain and the gain ratio had equal precision values (57.58%), however, they had higher precision in compared with the gini index. In contrast, the gain ratio was higher than the information gain and the gini index concerning with the RMSE of 0.564.
