Abstract

Purpose: This study investigates how parenting styles, self‑control, and social media use influence the politeness of undergraduate students at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. By identifying these relationships, the research aims to shed light on factors contributing to the observed decline in polite behavior among adolescents and inform interventions to promote respectful communication. Methodology: Adopting a quantitative correlational design, the study surveyed 370 S1 students across multiple faculties at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS). Standardized questionnaires measured perceived parenting style (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive), individual self‑control levels, patterns of social media usage, and self‑reported politeness behaviors. Data were analyzed using multiple regression techniques to assess the strength and significance of each predictor’s effect on student politeness. Results: The analysis demonstrated that all three independent variables—parenting styles, self‑control, and social media use—exerted positive, statistically significant effects on students’ politeness (p < 0.05). Authoritative parenting and higher self‑control were particularly strong predictors, while balanced, purposeful social media engagement also correlated with more courteous online and offline interactions. Applications/Originality/Value: By empirically linking family dynamics, individual regulation skills, and digital habits to polite conduct, this study offers a comprehensive framework for educators, counselors, and policymakers aiming to foster respectful behavior. Its findings can guide parent‑education programs, campus‑based self‑control workshops, and digital‑literacy initiatives, while providing a theoretical foundation for future research on adolescent social etiquette in digital contexts.

Abstract

Purpose: This study explains the bullying prevention program implemented in a Child Friendly School (SRA) setting, focusing on how phenomenological inquiry can uncover students’ lived experiences of bullying and the ways the school’s initiatives give meaning to those experiences. Methodology: Employing a qualitative phenomenological design, data were collected through in‑depth interviews with teachers, parents, and students; direct observations of classroom and playground interactions; and review of relevant documentation (including SOPs and project plans). This approach allowed the researcher to interpret and describe the firsthand experiences of community members as they engage with the school’s anti‑bullying efforts. Results: Findings reveal that KB/TK Islam Orbit II’s bullying prevention program is guided by a clear Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and is integrated into a Project‑Based Learning (PJBL) model that emphasizes collaboration, mutual assistance, and real‑world problem solving. Teachers serve as living models of positive behavior, instilling good habits in school that extend into the home. Moreover, by educating children about the nature, causes, and consequences of bullying, the program empowers peers to intervene when they witness harmful behavior. Parental involvement—marked by sensitivity to even minor physical or emotional changes in their children—emerged as a critical factor in early detection and intervention. Applications/Originality/Value: This study offers a replicable framework for schools seeking to create child‑centered anti‑bullying programs: combining clear procedural guidelines with experiential, project‑based learning and active role modeling. Its phenomenological insights into children’s and parents’ perceptions provide valuable guidance for educators and policymakers aiming to foster safer, more empathetic learning environments at both school and family levels.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines strategies for habituating punctuality discipline among slow‑learner students in Indonesian language classes at State Elementary School 4 Pilangpayung. By focusing on how timely‑discipline practices can support learners who progress more slowly, the research aims to identify effective teacher‑led interventions that enhance these students’ engagement and mastery of Bahasa Indonesia under the Merdeka Curriculum. Methodology: Adopting a qualitative case‑study design, the investigation employed in‑depth interviews with teachers, observations of classroom routines, and analysis of school documentation. Researchers immersed themselves in the daily learning environment to capture detailed descriptions of slow‑learner characteristics, the implementation of punctuality‑habituation tactics, and the broader instructional processes at work. Results: Findings reveal that teachers successfully embed punctuality discipline by integrating Merdeka‑aligned lessons with consistent time‑management cues, employing individualized learning approaches, and engaging parents as partners in reinforcing routines at home. Key enablers include active principal supervision of discipline activities, students’ own growing awareness of timeliness, and teachers’ hands‑on involvement. Conversely, limited student self‑awareness and unsupportive home or community environments were identified as barriers to consistent punctuality. Applications/Originality/Value: By mapping these strategies and contextual factors, the study offers practical guidance for educators seeking to strengthen time‑discipline habits among slower learners. Its insights emphasize the importance of combining curriculum‑aligned classroom practices, personalized support, and family collaboration. Education leaders can use these findings to design targeted training programs and parent‑engagement initiatives that foster punctuality, thereby improving learning outcomes for all students

Abstract

Purpose: This study analyzes how digital learning—specifically the use of real‑world event photos sourced from social media—can be implemented to teach news‑text composition to seventh‑grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta, assessing whether integrating authentic visual stimuli enhances both writing proficiency and 21st‑century digital literacy skills. Methodology: Adopting a qualitative case‑study approach, researchers worked with all 20 students in class VII C. Data sources included observation sheets documenting classroom interactions, students’ written news‑text assignments based on selected photos, and semi‑structured interviews with participants. Data collection combined direct classroom observation, task analysis, and in‑depth interviews, while analysis followed Glaser and Strauss’s constant comparative method to identify emerging themes related to engagement, skill development, and pedagogical effectiveness. Results: Findings indicate that incorporating social‑media event photos into news‑text lessons successfully motivated students and provided concrete anchors for practicing journalistic writing conventions—such as headline crafting, fact‐checking, and narrative structuring. Moreover, students demonstrated growth in digital literacy competencies, including information retrieval, critical evaluation of online sources, and multimedia presentation. Each student group produced a culminating project in the form of an Instagram‑style post, showcasing their ability to synthesize visual and textual information effectively. Applications/Originality/Value: By designing digital learning around authentic social‑media content, this study offers an innovative model for news‑text instruction that aligns with contemporary media practices and technological advancements. Its approach can guide educators in other institutions seeking to modernize language curricula, fostering both writing skills and digital literacy. Furthermore, the research contributes a novel case of leveraging social‑media artifacts as pedagogical tools, illustrating how educational adaptation to evolving science and technology can enrich classroom learning experiences.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the negotiation language structure used by sellers and buyers from different ethnic backgrounds in traditional markets in Surakarta. The study examines how ethnic diversity affects negotiation strategies and communication styles in markets such as Sidodadi Market, Gede Market, Triwindu Market, Klewer Market, Ngarsopuro Market, Sekaten Market, and Kliwon Market. Methodology: Using qualitative methods and descriptive analysis, data were collected through interviews and field observations. Results: The results show that the negotiation structure-which includes orientation, request, offer, agreement, and closing-remains consistent across markets. However, language variations reflected the ethnic backgrounds of the participants, with Javanese, Indonesian, Mandarin, English, Russian, Arabic, and Sundanese frequently used. Negotiation strategies also varied, with Javanese-dominated markets emphasizing social harmony, while multiethnic markets, such as Gede Market and Ngarsopuro Market, favored efficiency. Applications/Originality/Value: This research emphasizes the important role of cultural and ethnic diversity in shaping language and negotiation strategies in Surakarta's traditional markets.

Abstract

Purpose: The objective of this study is to conceptualize and evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition education media specifically tailored for elementary school stu-dents, presented in the form of posters promoting healthy snack choices. Methodology: This research method uses the Research and Development (R&D) method of Analysis, Design, Development (ADD) which is then tested for validity us-ing the CVI formula. This validity test involved 6 experts who consisted of 2 nutrition experts, 2 language experts, and 2 media experts. Results: Based on the results of the expert judgment, the CVI value of the nutrition expert of 0.96 is included in the very suitable category, the language expert of 0.96 is included in the very suitable category and the media expert of 0.86 is included in the very suitable category. So, it can be concluded that the ed-ucational media poster “Ayo Jajan Sehat” is suitable for nutrition education for elementary school students. Applications/Originality/Value: This study contributes to the development of effective visual-based nutrition education tools tailored for young learners. The "Ayo Jajan Sehat" poster serves as a practical and validated medium to enhance students' awareness of healthy snack choices. It can be integrated into school health programs and classroom learning to support early intervention in building healthy eating habits, thus promoting long-term wellness from an early age.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explore the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in improving English language learning among high school students in a bilingual school in Surakarta, Indonesia. Although AI is increasingly being integrated into the curriculum, more is needed to know about students’ experiences using AI for language learning, especially regarding technical challenges and their limited understanding of this technology. Methodology: This qualitative study used document analysis, observation, and semi-structured interviews with students and teachers based on Creswell’s (2014) qualitative approach. Participants were selected by purposive sampling, consisting of students in grades X, XI, and XII who use AI tools such as Duolingo and Google Translate. Results: Findings showed that although students found personalized feedback from AI tools helpful, challenges such as internet connectivity issues and limited linguistic feedback reduced their effectiveness. Some proposed solutions include developing more adaptive AI tools, improving technological infrastructure, and providing AI literacy training to enable students to utilize these technologies more optimally. Applications/Originality/Value: In addition, integrating AI with more diverse traditional teaching approaches can increase student motivation and reduce over-reliance on technology. This research provides new insights into AI’s challenges and potential uses in language education, emphasizing the need to balance technology and conventional learning methods. The development of more interactive and inclusive AI tools and AI literacy education can support the maximum utilization of this technology in bilingual education environments.

Abstract

Purpose: Describe the application of Socioscientific Issue-based LKPD for students in elementary school. 2) Describe the specifications for the development of Socioscientific Issue-based Learner Worksheets (LKPD) for elementary school students. 3) Testing the validity of the Socioscientific Issue-based Learner Worksheet (LKPD) for elementary school students. Methodology: This research is a research and development that uses the Borg and Gall development mod-el, with stages including potential and problems, information gathering, product design, design validation, design revision, product trials and product revision. Results: The results show that LKPD is effective for improving science literacy and learning skills of students, as well as creating an active and enthusiastic learning atmosphere. Applications/Originality/Value: This LKPD can be used as a learning resource in the learning process to perform certain tasks that can encourage and support students in carrying out the learning process to achieve the desired understanding, skills, or attitudes.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the use of edutainment methods in developing cooperative character among fifth grade elementary school students, and to explore how edutainment which combines educational and entertainment elements affects students' motivation and collaborative skills. Methodology: A qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Interviews were conducted with teachers and students to gain insights into edutainment implementation and its influence on cooperation. Observations assessed student interactions during edutainment activities, and documentation supported the findings. Results: The study found that the edutainment method provided opportunities for fifth grade students at SD Muhammadiyah 18 Surakarta to actively engage in the learning process. Its application was effective in shaping and enhancing students' cooperative character. Applications/Originality/Value: This study highlights the practical value of integrating edutainment into classroom instruction to foster not only engagement but also character development, especially cooperation. It contributes to the growing body of research on character education through interactive and enjoyable learning approaches.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to describe the significant differences in students' reading ability after applying the Project Based Learning model with interactive media Wordwall game, compared to the Inquiry Learning Model with interactive video media Edpuzzle. Methodology: The research involved 46 students divided into two groups: a control group using the Inquiry Learning Model with Edpuzzle interactive video, and an experimental group using the Project Based Learning Model with Wordwall media. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test, and analyzed using the N-Gain value test. Validity and reliability tests were conducted on the instruments used. Results: The control group showed an N-Gain score of 0.42 (considered good enough), while the experimental group showed a higher score of 0.59, indicating a 59% improvement in reading ability (from 56% to 75%). Students in the experimental group demonstrated more enthusiasm and creativity, particularly in the process of product creation and interactive question exercises. Applications/Originality/Value: This research highlights the effectiveness of combining project-based learning with game-based media like Wordwall in enhancing reading skills. The interactive, product-oriented, and engaging learning process fosters not only better comprehension but also student motivation and creativity—making it a valuable approach for language learning environments.
