Abstract

The study discusses the differences of back vowel systems of Madurese and English, the pronunciation of English back vowels uttered by Madurese native speakers through the measurement of F1 and F2 using PRAAT, and examines the types and causes of interferences. The research is qualitative. The data are the recorded pronunciation of five Madurese junior students of English Education Students of Teaching and Education Faculty of Islamic University of Malang (UNISMA) who live in Malang. The data was collected by using elicity technique and analyzed using Miles and Huberman's analytical model. The results showed that the back vowel /u/ pronounced by Madurese Native Speakers is similar to the sound /ʊ/. A similar condition occurs when Madurese Native Speakers pronounce the sounds /ɔ/ and /ɒ/, where the quality of formant measurement vowel /ɒ/ closes to vowel /ɔ/. Meanwhile, the formant value for the pronunciation of vowel /o/ is relatively stable and almost as good as English Native Speaker pronunciation. The type of interference occurs is substitution interference. It happens because of the first language phonological rules are still used when they utter the second language and the lack of English vocabularies owned by Non Native English speaker influences the pronunciation of some phoneme in second language.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the use of the satirical language style of Minangkabau ethnic authors in Minangkabau local color prose. This study is as the effort to revitalize and document intangible heritage, namely the satirical language of the Minangkabau locality. This study is motivated by the lack of readers or researchers who attempt to identify, describe, deconstruct concepts, to provide an understanding of the Minangkabau local language in prose, especially satire. Data collection techniques were carried out by identifying and classifying data of Minangkabau local satire style by stabilizing words, phrases, clauses, or sentences which were then formulated as forms and examples of Minangkabau local satire style using the format of identification and classification of data. Satire is used as a critique about people or objects being observed. Of course, the weakness is meant not merely to human nature/behavior, but other things that deserve to be criticized, such as political conditions, cultural dynamics, bureaucratic systems, moral, social, economic degradation, and so on that are carried out by humans. This is the motive of Heru Joni Putra, Dt. Panduko Alam, and Ambas Mahkota in using satire. The main goal is to make ethical and aesthetic improvements to the object being criticized.

Abstract

This research examines colonialism in India, focusing on the British East India Company and the practice of hegemony. The study explores how the company shifted from trading to monopolizing India's economy. Postcolonial theory and literature are analyzed as tools to understand the effects of European colonialism on society, culture, and history. The concept of hegemony is explored as a form of dominance exerted by the colonizers over the colonized. Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent resistance is highlighted as a struggle against British cultural and economic hegemony. The research employed qualitative methods, utilizing close reading and library research. This study contributes to understanding colonial dynamics and the impact of hegemony in India. The writer of Gandhi found how British colonizers influenced India, the colonization with their ideology that distinguished between white and colored people, also known as hegemony. The aspect of this hegemony is the general conception of life, which represents "old ideologies" that were spread coercively. Additionally, the colonized people, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, engage in a struggle against the British hegemony.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the form of representation of gender relations in the television drama series “From Five to Nine” (2015) and the meanings as well as critics to be conveyed through the drama. The theory used in this study is R.W. Connell’s theory of gender and hegemonic masculinity (1985, 1987), Rosemarie Tong’s liberal feminism theory (2014), and Stuart Hall’s representation theory (1997). The research method used in this research is semiotic analysis using John Fiske’s semiotic theory of television codes (2001) which divides film analysis into three levels: reality, representation, and ideology. The research focusses on the main female and male characters, Sakuraba Junko and Hoshikawa Takane. The analysis includes characterization, dialogue, conflict, camera shots, music, editing, and ideological values contained in each scene segment. Based on the analysis that has been done, the researcher finds that there is a change in the form of the relationship that occurres between Junko and Takane from the beginning of the episode to the end. At the beginning of their relationship, Takane is described as more dominant than Junko, but Junko, as an independent female character, does not want to be dominated, so their relationship changes in a more equal direction. This drama also represents a relationship of interdependence and not a power relationship between the two characters.
