Abstract

Abstract

The concept of the Restoration of the Tabernacle of David is often interpreted in contemporary Indonesian Pentecostal and charismatic churches as the recovery of praise, worship, music, and prayer. Although this liturgical emphasis is important, such a reduction tends to obscure the missional argument embedded in Acts 15:16–17, where James cites Amos 9:11–12 in the context of the Jerusalem Council. This article aims to examine the theological relationship between the Restoration of the Tabernacle of David and the foundation of the church’s mission among the nations. This study uses a qualitative library research method through textual-theological analysis of Acts 15:13–21 and Amos 9:11–12, supported by New Testament exegesis, Pentecostal theology, and missiological literature. The main finding shows that the restoration motif in Acts 15 does not primarily refer to the rebuilding of a physical structure or the recovery of a worship model, but to God’s salvific act of forming an inclusive covenant community in Christ. Thus, the Restoration of the Tabernacle of David functions as a theological foundation for universal mission, reconciliation, and ecclesial participation in Indonesia’s plural society. The study concludes that Pentecostal worship must be read together with Spirit-empowered mission.

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the biblical basis, history of interpretation, and Pentecostal defense of glossolalia as a continuing gift of the Spirit. Using qualitative library research with exegetical, historical-theological, and apologetic approaches, it distinguishes glossolalia from xenolalia and clarifies that the Indonesian expression bahasa roh is a theological designation rather than a literal Greek phrase. The study argues cumulatively that the New Testament gives no explicit terminus for tongues at the close of the apostolic age, locates the cessation of partial gifts within an eschatological horizon, and regulates rather than prohibits their use. Historical reception reveals continuity and change, while selected official GBI documents and publicly documented teaching associated with Niko Njotorahardjo and Kong Hee illustrate the continuing reception of the practice in contemporary Pentecostal communities. On this basis, the article affirms that glossolalia should be received, taught, and given responsible space in the church today, both as personal prayer and, with interpretation, for congregational edification. Such affirmation does not validate every manifestation or permit coercion; the practice remains subject to Christological confession, Scripture, love, self-control, ecclesial order, communal discernment, and the fruit of the Spirit. Because this study is library-based and limited to selected biblical, historical, and ecclesial sources, it does not empirically verify the authenticity, linguistic structure, or pastoral outcomes of particular manifestations. Further multi-site fieldwork, linguistic analysis, and comparative denominational research are therefore required.

Abstract

Deuteronomy 6:4, widely known as the Shema Israel, is one of the most fundamental confessions of faith in the religious tradition of ancient Israel, affirming the exclusive oneness of YHWH. Although the text has been widely discussed in Indonesian theological scholarship, most existing studies approach it primarily from the standpoint of Christian religious education and family discipleship, while comprehensive treatment that integrates historical-critical inquiry, syntactic-lexical analysis, and contextual theological reflection remains limited. This article aims to fill that gap by analyzing the theological meaning of the Shema Israel in Deuteronomy 6:4 through a historical-critical approach and examining its relevance for Christians today. This study employs a qualitative method with a library-based biblical studies approach, integrating historical-contextual, grammatical-lexical, structural, and theological analysis of the Hebrew text. Data were drawn from primary sources (the Masoretic Hebrew text and its major translations) and secondary sources (lexicons, commentaries, and peer-reviewed theological journals), and were analyzed descriptively-interpretively. The findings show that the key terms shema and echad, together with the text’s tightly structured nominal syntax, express not merely a numerical claim about God’s singularity but an exclusive covenantal claim demanding total obedience. In the context of contemporary Christianity, this oneness of God carries renewed relevance amid secularism, moral relativism, and religious pluralism, which often manifest as subtler forms of idolatry. This study concludes that a proper understanding of the Shema Israel deepens Christian theological self-understanding and shapes an appropriately exclusive yet socially responsible faith commitment in the present context.

Abstract

John 4:20–26 is often read as a contrast between outward ritual and inward sincerity, or as evidence that Christian worship is no longer related to place, the body, or liturgical form. Although such readings capture part of the passage, they may reduce the phrase “spirit and truth” to personal authenticity. This study reexamines the theological meaning of worship in spirit and truth by bringing together the Gerizim–Jerusalem controversy, Johannine Christology and pneumatology, and contemporary Pentecostal theology of worship. Employing qualitative theological research through a focused literature review, narrative-exegetical analysis, and canonical-theological synthesis, the study argues that Jesus does not simply abolish sacred geography. Rather, he centers worship on himself within the eschatological “hour” inaugurated through his person and work. Worship “in spirit” describes a human response awakened and sustained by the Holy Spirit, while worship “in truth” means conformity to God’s self-revelation embodied in Christ and witnessed in Scripture. The article’s main contribution is a trinitarian-transformative participation model: the Father seeks worshipers, the Son mediates and gives worship its definitive shape, and the Spirit enables the church to respond. Such participation must take visible form in the life of the church and produce ethical, reconciling, and missional fruit. Therefore, Pentecostal and contemporary worship should be assessed not mainly by emotional intensity, musical style, or technological sophistication, but by its Christ-centered character, the integration of Spirit and Word, communal discernment, and its ability to form a holy and witnessing people.
