Abstract

This article examines the religious communication strategies of ulama (Islamic scholars) in East Aceh; analyzing their role in promoting religious moderation. Using Lessl’s theory that argues religious communication is inherently metaphorical and involves metaphysical referents, this article highlights the important role of da’wa in encouraging the acceptance of the idea of moderation within the community. This article was based on qualitative research and two months field observations of Abati Aramia and Abah Zein’s pengajian (recitation), two young and influential ulama in East Aceh. The data validation process used data triangulation by connecting field data, observation and theory to get a complete understanding of the phenomenon. This paper argues that the influence of ulama in introducing religious moderation, particularly state-promoted ideas, into local contexts is crucial. Abah Zein employs a dialogical approach, making his da’wah interactive and responsive to societal needs, while Abati Aramia emphasizes collective dialogue and consensus for maintaining societal harmony. From this study it is concluded that the ulama’s communication strategies are integral to promoting Islamic moderation, bridging the gap between religious teachings and the everyday challenges faced by the community.

Abstract

This article examines the role of Islamic parties in West Sumatra concerning central-regional relations before and after the 1955 General Election, specifically during the 1950s. The historical study reveals that political landscape in Central Sumatra after the 1955 General Elections was non-linear.  Central Sematra was dominated by Islamic parties, especiallly Masyumi Party,  in contrast to the national election results, whichwere won by secular parties, especially the PNI. This discrepancy significantly impacted the escalation of conflict between the region and the central political authorities.  This central-regional conflict culminated in the PRRI rebellion between 1958 and 1961 which was not only contributed to the decline of Islamic parties but also reshaped  the historical narrative concerning the role of the Minangkabau ethnic group in Indonesia.

Abstract

Pesantren possess significant potential within the national economy, particularly through the development of entrepreneurship-based economic self-reliance. A notable example of success is Pesantren Riyadlul Jannah in Mojokerto, which has effectively established a sustainable business ecosystem. This research aims to explore the unique motivations driving entrepreneurial success within this pesantren, examining how their core values and beliefs are manifested in their business practices. Employing a qualitative methodology with a Grounded Theory approach, this study developed theory based on empirical data collected directly from the field. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, document analysis, and audio-visual methods. Participants were selected using purposive and snowball sampling techniques, encompassing pesantren leader, business unit managers, students, and other stakeholders. The findings revealed that entrepreneurial motivation at Pesantren Riyadlul Jannah was driven by distinctive Islamic values, namely jihad, dakwah, and wathaniyah. Jihad encouraged students to build economic self-reliance to uphold Islamic values and enhance community welfare. Dakwah instilled a strong work ethic and a spirit of community empowerment, while wathaniyah fostered active involvement in managing national resources to achieve national economic independence. This study underscores the pivotal role of spiritual values as a primary factor in pesantren entrepreneurship. In contrast to conventional theories, these findings demonstrate that religious values shape the mindset and business strategies of pesantren entrepreneurs. Beyond its role as an educational institution, the pesantren also serves as a center for Islamic-based economic empowerment.

Abstract

This study addresses the urgent need to understand how Islamic economics is discussed and perceived in the digital age, where social media has become a primary arena for shaping public opinion and financial literacy. Unlike earlier works that relied more on surveys or descriptive methods, this research utilizes Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to examine online conversations about zakat, waqf, and Islamic finance, and how ideology and power are reflected in these discourses. The findings reveal that Islamic economics has significant potential for growth through digital innovation, but faces challenges in financial literacy and product innovation. Theoretically, this study expands the application of CDA in Islamic economic discourse and provides practical contributions by offering insights into strengthening financial literacy, enhancing public education, and fostering innovation in Islamic financial products to ensure competitiveness in the digital economy. Therefore, it is crucial for all stakeholders to collaborate in improving public understanding and supporting the development of Islamic economics in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study explores the challenges and potential improvements of the roles and responsibilities of Musyrif/Musyrifah at Ma’had Al-Jamiah UIN Syahada Padangsidimpuan, focusing on the role of active students serving in these positions. Through document analysis, interviews with key stakeholders, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), the study identifies a significant imbalance between the academic responsibilities of student Musyrif/ah and their duties in dormitory mentoring and management. The indings of the research suggest that the transitionto full-time Musyrif/ah—individuals who are not concurrently enrolled in academicstudies—has the potential to enhance the effectiveness of the mentoring system and dormitoru management. However, the main challenges such as limited funding and infrastructure become obstacles to the implementasion of this programam. The study also highlights the importance of ongoing training and development programs to improve the competencies and qualifications of Musyrif/ah, including  the integrating technology into their roles. Based on these findings, the researchers recommendstrategic policies such as the recruitment of full-time professional Musyrif/ah, the allocationof special funds for dormitory operations, the provision of certified training, and the strengthening of the performance evaluation system. These reforms are considered essential to optimize the Musyrif/ah system to improve the quality of student guidance and management of Ma’had in Islamic higher education institutions.

Abstract

This study explores the metamorphosis of productive zakat through the integration of women empowerment in the Kampung Zakat (Zakat Village) program initiated by BAZNAS in Besole Village, Besuki District, Tulungagung Regency. Employing a qualitative approach based on interviews, observations, and documentation, the study reveals that productive zakat does not merely provide capital assistance, but also initiates a transformation process, economically, socially, and spiritually. Women, especially widows and members of low-income families, became empowered to support their households through small enterprises. More importantly, they were also encouraged to engage in daily giving practices (such as sadaqah subuh), which fostered spiritual growth and nurtures the transition from mustahik (zakat recipient) to muzakki (zakat contributor). This indicateed a metamorphosis from passive dependence to active contribution. The findings affirmed that productive zakat, when combined with structured empowerment and spiritual reinforcement, became an effective tool in realizing SDGs Goals 1 (No Poverty) and 5 (Gender Equality). This study contributes to the field of Islamic philanthropy and zakat management by proposing a contextual, replicable empowerment model that aligns with global development goals while offering practical implications for public policy and localized zakat distribution strategies
