Islam Realitas: Journal of Islamic and Social Studies is an international journal published by the State Islamic Institute of Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, Indonesia. It specializes in research on Islamic and social problems from a range of disciplines and interdisciplinary fields. The interdisciplinary approach in Islamic studies is used as a method to discuss and find solutions to contemporary problems and social issues. Abstract

Religion in the Malay community is not only seen as something related to belief but also concerns issues of identity and symbols in other community groups. This study intends to look at the social construction of Islamic local tradition in the Malay community. This study argues that it turns out that the social construction of religion builds a cultural concept in Islamic religious values as an identity through the customs of the Malay community. In response to that argument, the question arises: How is the form of social construction of religion in the Malay community? And how does the social construction of religion affect the social life of religion in the Malay community? This research uses a media approach and literature review that explains the social construction of Islamic traditions in Malay society. The results of this study indicate that the social construction of religion in the Malay community has several important conditions. (1) religion-based tradition orientation, (2) close solidarity in religious social construction, (3) the existence of religion-based legal norms in the Malay community, and (4) a proud identity that is superior to the Malay community. These findings conclude that religious social construction in Malay society shows that religious and tribal identities develop as a religious social construction.Agama dalam masyarakat Melayu tidak hanya dilihat sebagai sesuatu yang berkaitan dengan kepercayaan, tetapi juga menyangkut persoalan identitas dan simbol pada kelompok masyarakat lainnya. Penelitian ini bermaksud untuk melihat konstruksi sosial dari tradisi lokal Islam pada masyarakat Melayu. Penelitian ini berargumen bahwa ternyata konstruksi sosial agama membangun konsep budaya dalam nilai-nilai agama Islam sebagai identitas melalui adat istiadat masyarakat Melayu. Dengan itu, penelitian ini merumuskan sebuah pertanyaan bagaimana bentuk konstruksi sosial agama pada masyarakat Melayu? Dan bagaimana pengaruh konstruksi sosial agama terhadap kehidupan sosial keagamaan pada masyarakat Melayu? Penelitian ini menggunakan media dan studi literatur yang menjelaskan tentang kehidupan sosial dan agama dalam masyarakat Melayu. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa konstruksi sosial agama pada masyarakat Melayu menunjukkan bahwa; (1) adanya orientasi tradisi berbasis agama; (2) adanya solidaritas dalam konstruksi sosial agama; (3) adanya norma hukum berbasis agama pada masyarakat Melayu; dan (4) adanya kebanggaan akan identitas yang lebih unggul pada masyarakat Melayu. Dengan hasil ini, disimpulkan bahwa konstruksi sosial keagamaan dalam masyarakat Melayu menunjukkan bahwa identitas agama dan kesukuan berkembang sebagai konstruksi sosial keagamaan.

Abstract

Allegations of brutality in the Islamic penal code significantly damage the reputation of Islam globally. The imposition of one hundred lashes as a punishment for individuals who engage in adultery can only occur if there is legal evidence to substantiate the act of adultery. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the extent to which Islamic criminal law upholds human dignity, particularly in some cases involving individuals accused of adultery. This study adopts a normative perspective, employing an Islamic legal framework. The research collected primary and secondary data from various sources, including fiqh's books, hadith’s books, books on human rights and dignity, journals, and other articles. The Bayani method will be employed to analyze all data. Research findings indicate that adultery can be proven through three methods: the testimony of four witnesses, the confession of the perpetrator, and evidence of pregnancy. Nevertheless, in practice, achieving these three forms of evidence can be exceedingly challenging, as the fundamental tenet of Islamic penal code is to refrain from imposing penalties in cases that remain doubtful (shubhat). Islam places great significance on human rights, human dignity, and human worth.Tuduhan kejam pada hukum pidana Islam secara signifikan merusak reputasi Islam secara global. Penjatuhan hukuman cambuk sebanyak seratus kali bagi pelaku zina hanya dapat terjadi apabila terdapat bukti-bukti sah yang membenarkan perbuatan zina tersebut. Artikel ini ditujukan untuk menunjukkan sejauh mana hukum pidana Islam menjunjung tinggi harkat dan martabat manusia, khususnya dalam kasus-kasus yang melibatkan individu yang dituduh melakukan perzinahan. Penelitian ini berbentuk normatif, dengan menggunakan kerangka hukum Islam. Penelitian ini mengumpulkan data primer dan sekunder dari berbagai sumber antara lain buku-buku fiqih, kitab-kitab hadis, buku hak asasi dan martabat manusia, jurnal, dan artikel. Metode bayani akan digunakan untuk menganalisis seluruh data. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perzinahan dapat dibuktikan melalui tiga cara: keterangan empat orang saksi, pengakuan pelaku, dan bukti kehamilan. Namun demikian, dalam praktiknya, mewujudkan ketiga bentuk bukti ini bisa jadi sangat menantang dan sulit, karena prinsip dasar pidana Islam adalah menghindari untuk menjatuhkan hukuman dalam kasus-kasus yang masih diragukan (shubhat). Islam sangat mementingkan hak asasi manusia, harkat dan martabat manusia.

Abstract

The development of modern information technology and mass education does not necessarily weaken traditional religious authorities such as Habib. One of Habib's efforts to survive amidst the development of contemporary information technology is to deliver fatwas with popular culture. Fatwa is the main channel for Habib to establish and strengthen his authority. This article examines the adaptation of popular culture in digital fatwas on social media. This study uses a qualitative method. The data collection technique was carried out through netnography. Then, the data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of this research show that there are several forms of adaptation of popular culture carried out by Habib Husein Ja'far in conveying his fatwa on social media. First, Habib Husein Ja'far adapted slang language in conveying his fatwa on social media. Second, Habib Husein Ja'far adopted Japanese culture. Third, Habib Husein Ja'far visualized his fatwa in modern comics. Based on these findings, this study concludes that the development of modern technology has provided opportunities for habib to deliver their fatwas digitally. The form of the fatwa delivered by Habib adopts the form of popular culture, thereby attracting the attention of modern young Muslims.Perkembangan teknologi informasi modern dan pendidikan massal tidak lantas melemahkan otoritas keagamaan tradisional seperti habib. Salah satu upaya yang dilakukan habib untuk bertahan di tengah perkembangan teknologi informasi modern adalah dengan mengemas fatwa melalui budaya populer. Fatwa menjadi saluran utama bagi seorang habib untuk membentuk dan menguatkan otoritasnya. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji adaptasi budaya populer dalam fatwa digital di media sosial. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Adapun teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui netnografi. Kemudian data dianalisis menggunakan analisis tematik. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada beberapa bentuk adaptasi budaya populer yang dilakukan Habib Husein Ja’far dalam menyampaikan fatwanya di media sosial yaitu: Pertama, Habib Husein Ja’far mengadaptasi bahasa slang dalam menyampaikan fatwanya di media sosial. Kedua, Habib Husein Ja’far mengadaptasi budaya Jepang. Ketiga, Habib Husein Ja’far memvisualisasikan fatwanya ke dalam komik modern. Berdasarkan temuan tersebut, penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa perkembangan teknologi modern telah memberikan peluang kepada habib untuk menyampaikan fatwanya secara digital. Bentuk fatwa yang disampaikan oleh habib mengadopsi bentuk budaya populer, sehingga menarik perhatian anak muda Muslim modern.

Abstract

The professionalization of amil (zakat manager) become an ongoing problem in zakat organizations and has received sharp criticism. This problem has begun to be addressed, among other things, by developing the zakat and waqf management study program (MAZAWA) in universities, but do the students themselves intend to pursue a career as professional amils in the future? This research was carried out to discuss such problems related on zakat management. The study was located at UIN Sunan Ampel, Surabaya, and IAIN Langsa, with 95 respondents. The data analysis technique uses descriptive statistics and SEM-PLS using SmartPLS 4.0 software, while to see the level of their intention to pursue a career as amil, a hypothetical statistical analysis technique is used. The research results show that the variables attitude toward the behavior (ATB) (2.608>1.98), perceived behavioral control (PBC) (1.989>1.98), and subjective norms (SN) (3.922>1.98) have a significant effect on students' intentions to pursue a career as an amil. The research results also show that MAZAWA students' intentions to have a career as amils are in the high category (1522 > 1.140 + (l.5x253,3)), so it can be said to have significantly supported efforts to professionalize amil in higher education. Their high intentions need to be supported by increasing the factors that influence them. Their high intentions need to be supported by increasing the factors that influence them; The financial benefits and professionalism of amil as a career need to be considered, the reach of beneficiaries and access to volunteering needs to be expanded, and outreach about amil careers needs to be further intensified.Problem profesionalisasi amil menjadi persoalan yang belum kunjung usai di organiasasi zakat dan mendapat kritik tajam. Persoalan ini telah mulai dibenahi, antara lain dengan pengembangan pendidikan program studi manajemen zakat dan wakaf (MAZAWA) di perguruan tinggi, namun apakah para mahasiswa sendiri memiliki intensi untuk berkarir sebagai amil profesional di masa depan? Untuk melihat bagaimana gambarannya, penelitian ini pun dilakukan. Penelitian berlokasi di UIN Sunan Ampel, Surabaya, dan IAIN Langsa, dengan jumlah responden sebanyak 95 orang. Teknik analisis data menggunakan SEM-PLS dengan software SmartPLS 4.0. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa variabel ATB (2.608>1.98), PBC (1.989>1.98), dan SN (3.922>1.98) berpengaruh signifikan terhadap intensi mahasiswa untuk berkarir sebagai amil zakat. Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa intensi mahasiswa MAZAWA untuk berkarir sebagai amil zakat termasuk kategori tinggi (1522 > 1.140 + (l.5x253,3)), sehingga dapat dikatakan telah sangat mendukung upaya profesionalisasi amil zakat di perguruan tinggi. Tingginya intensi mereka perlu didukung dengan meningkatkan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhinya; keuntungan secara finansial dan profesionalitas amil sebagai karir perlu untuk diperhatikan, jangkauan penerima manfaat dan akses untuk menjadi relawan perlu diperluas, dan sosialisasi tentang karir amil perlu lebih digencarkan lagi.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to discuss the analysis and Sustainable Development Goals from an Islamic perspective, ideology and social ethos. The basis of the debate on sustainable development is to create conditions that balance the needs of present generations with the needs of future generations. Qualitative research methods were used in preparing this article. The type of research carried out is library research using data sources related to the writings of the Ringundan philosophers. Related works include magazines, articles, e-books, etc. The research results show that sustainable development is related to the principles of sustainable development and shows that the concepts developed by experts have their own weight and specificity. Apart from that, these concepts can show a way out of the current global environmental crisis. From an identity perspective, sustainable development cannot be separated from its monotheistic foundation. Sustainable development is still a dilemma for environmental observers, and the analysis carried out shows that the emergence of the concept of sustainable development cannot be separated from modernity and all the problems associated with it. Mapping the concept, sustainable development can be categorized into a constructive postmodernist model.  Tujuan artikel ini adalah untuk membahas analisis dan Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan dari perspektif Islam, ideologi dan etos sosial. Dasar perdebatan mengenai pembangunan berkelanjutan adalah menciptakan kondisi yang menyeimbangkan kebutuhan generasi sekarang dengan kebutuhan generasi mendatang. Metode penelitian kualitatif digunakan dalam mempersiapkan artikel ini. Jenis penelitian yang dilakukan adalah penelitian kepustakaan dengan menggunakan sumber data yang berkaitan dengan tulisan para filosof Ringundan. Karya-karya terkait antara lain majalah, artikel, e-book, dll. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pembangunan berkelanjutan berkaitan dengan prinsip-prinsip pembangunan berkelanjutan dan menunjukkan bahwa konsep-konsep yang dikembangkan oleh para ahli mempunyai bobot dan kekhususan tersendiri. Selain itu, konsep-konsep tersebut dapat menunjukkan jalan keluar dari krisis lingkungan global yang terjadi saat ini. Dari perspektif identitas, pembangunan berkelanjutan tidak dapat dipisahkan dari landasan monoteistiknya. Pembangunan berkelanjutan masih menjadi dilema bagi para pemerhati lingkungan hidup, dan analisis yang dilakukan menunjukkan bahwa munculnya konsep pembangunan berkelanjutan tidak lepas dari modernitas dan segala permasalahan yang terkait dengannya. Memetakan konsepnya, pembangunan berkelanjutan dapat dikategorikan ke dalam model postmodernis yang konstruktif

Abstract

This article examines the political landscape during Soekarno's rule (referred to as the Old Order/Orde Lama) and the early years of Soeharto's regime (New Order/Orde Baru). For Islamic political activists, the period from 1945 to 1973 was particularly challenging. Both the Old and New Orders governments were wary of Islamic parties, often blacklisting and marginalizing them. Employing historical research methods, including source collection (heuristic), source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, this article is a type of qualitative research conducted through literature study. The sources used include books from various libraries and the author's personal collection, as well as journal articles and proceedings accessed online via Google Scholar. The study is further supported by theories and political approaches, this article explores the struggle of Islamic activists during the 1955 elections, which were the first in Indonesia's history. Despite their efforts, they faced defeat rather than success, particularly in their attempts to establish Islam as the state foundation. During the New Order, Islamic groups continued to struggle. The government's strict political stance viewed the continuous criticism from Islamic parties as rebellious, leading to further suppression and their restriction to a single party, the United Development Party (Partai Persatuan Pembangunan/PPP). Additionally, this article highlights the challenges faced by Islamic activists in advocating for political participation under the pressure of an authoritarian regime. Artikel ini mengkaji lanskap politik selama masa pemerintahan Soekarno (dikenal sebagai Orde Lama) dan tahun-tahun awal rezim Soeharto (Orde Baru). Bagi aktivis politik Islam, periode dari tahun 1945 hingga 1973 sangat menantang. Baik pemerintahan Orde Lama maupun Orde Baru berhati-hati terhadap partai-partai Islam, seringkali memasukkan mereka ke daftar hitam dan meminggirkan mereka. Dengan menggunakan metode penelitian sejarah yang terdiri atas heuristik (pengumpulan sumber), kritik sumber, interpretasi, dan historiografi, artikel ini merupakan jenis penelitian kualitatif melalui studi pustaka, sumber yang digunakan adalah buku-buku dari berbagai perpustakaan maupun milik penulis pribadi, serta artikel jurnal dan prosiding yang diakses secara online pada Google Scholar. Selanjutnya diperkuat teori dan pendekatan politik, artikel ini mengeksplorasi perjuangan para aktivis Islam selama pemilu 1955, yang merupakan pemilu pertama dalam sejarah Indonesia. Meskipun upaya mereka pada akhirnya harus menuai kekalahan ketimbang keberhasilan, terutama dalam upaya untuk menjadikan Islam sebagai dasar negara. Selama Orde Baru, kelompok-kelompok Islam terus berjuang. Sikap politik pemerintah yang ketat menganggap kritik berkelanjutan dari partai-partai Islam sebagai pemberontakan, yang menyebabkan penindasan lebih lanjut dan pembatasan mereka pada satu partai tunggal, yakni Partai Persatuan Pembangunan (PPP). Selain itu, artikel ini juga menyoroti tantangan yang dihadapi aktivis Islam dalam memperjuangkan partisipasi politik mereka di tengah tekanan rezim yang otoriter.

Abstract

This article explains the science-religion struggle regarding the change in Muhammadiyah's dawn prayer time criteria, where this decision appears to be inconsistent with the research results of three previously appointed institutions. This research falls into the qualitative category, utilizing literature reviews related to the changes in Muhammadiyah's Fajr time criteria. The theory of science-religion relations is employed to dissect how the science-religion struggle is manifested in this decision. In practice, other research, philological studies, and the application in other Muslim countries also contribute to the considerations. The science-religion struggle in Muhammadiyah's decision is classified as an integrative typology in Ian Barbour's theory of science-religion relations. However, as an organization, Muhammadiyah is bound by rules to achieve its goals, guided by the Manhaj Tarjih and maslahah.  Although not explicitly neglecting the scientific aspect, setting -18° as the new criterion for Fajr time indicates Muhammadiyah's inconsistency in applying the research results of its three competent internal institutions. Artikel ini menjelaskan tentang pergumulan sains-agama dalam hal perubahan kriteria waktu subuh Muhammadiyah, dimana ketetapan ini terlihat tidak sesuai dengan hasil penelitian 3 lembaga yang telah ditunjuk sebelumnya. Penelitian ini tergolong pada penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan kajian kepustakaan terkait dengan perubahan kriteria waktu subuh Muhammadiyah. Teori relasi sains-agama digunakan untuk membedah bagaimana pergumulan sains-agama dalam keputusan ini. Pada prakteknya, penelitian lain oleh kader Muhammadiyah, kajian Filologi, dan penerapan pada negara muslim lain. Pergulatan sains-agama dalam keputusan Muhammadiyah ini tergolong tipologi integrasi dalam teori relasi sains-agama Ian Barbour, namun sebagai sebuah organisasi Muhammadiyah memiliki keterikatan terhadap aturan dalam pencapaian tujuan, dalam hal ini berpedoman kepada manhaj Tarjih dan kemaslahatan. Walaupun tidak serta merta sebagai pengabaian terhadap aspek sains, namun penetapan angka -18° sebagai kriteria baru waktu subuh menunjukkan ketidakkonsistenan Muhammadiyah dalam menerapkan hasil penelitian 3 lembaga internalnya yang berkompeten.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of religious behavior among street vendors in the Narmada District, West Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province. Religion is comprehensively understood to encompass both esoteric dimensions (belief, conviction, and spiritual experiences) and exoteric dimensions (rituals and practices). The study employs a religiosity research approach and an anthropological-phenomenological method. Out of 42 vendors, the research sample includes 10 street vendors selected through purposive sampling. Primary data is collected through in-depth interviews with street vendors and village authorities, while secondary data is gathered through observation and literature review to capture the phenomena and manifestations of religious behavior. This study found that the typology of religious behavior of street vendors in Narmada identified forms a unique pattern, characterized by conditional behaviors that mimic the priyayi style, adopt a santri-like demeanor at specific times, or embrace an abangan style. These behavioral patterns are influenced by internal factors, such as psychological conditions (hope and fear), and external factors, including pragmatic positivist elements (government policies, community dynamics, modernism, technology, and education levels). Economic conditions and the nature of the vendors' occupation also play a crucial role in shaping and attributing meaning to their religious behavior. Penelitian ini mengamati dan menguraikan dinamika perilaku keagamaan di kalangan pedagang kaki lima (PKL) di Terminal Narmada, Kabupaten Lombok Barat. Pemahaman agama didefinisikan secara menyeluruh, mencakup dimensi esoterik (keyakinan, kepercayaan, dan pengalaman spiritual) dan dimensi eksoterik (ritual dan praktik). Menggunakan pendekatan penelitian religiositas dan metode antropologis-fenomenologis, data primer diperoleh melalui wawancara mendalam dengan PKL dan aparat desa, sedangkan data sekunder diperoleh melalui observasi dan tinjauan pustaka untuk menangkap fenomena dan manifestasi perilaku keagamaan. Penelitian melibatkan 10 PKL yang dipilih melalui teknik purposive sampling. Tipologi perilaku keagamaan yang muncul membentuk pola unik, meliputi perilaku bersyarat yang menyerupai gaya priyayi, bersikap santri pada waktu tertentu, atau mengikuti gaya abangan. Faktor internal, seperti kondisi psikologis (harapan dan ketakutan), dan faktor eksternal, termasuk elemen positivis pragmatis (kebijakan pemerintah, dinamika masyarakat, modernisme, teknologi, dan tingkat pendidikan), memengaruhi pola-pola perilaku ini. Kondisi ekonomi dan jenis pekerjaan juga memainkan peran penting dalam membentuk dan memberikan makna pada perilaku keagamaan PKL di Terminal Narmada, Kabupaten Lombok Barat, NTB

Abstract

This article seeks to analyze the phenomenon of religious politics in Indonesia using Francis Fukuyama's concept of thymos. The 1945 constitution of Indonesia guaranteed the freedom of religion, yet on the one hand, it also provided explanations for six beliefs as definitive religions. This triggers the marginalization of adherents of traditional beliefs, with their rights not fully accommodated by the state. Thymos shape social and political life, and individuals or groups, when feeling that their thymotic needs are not met, may demand political recognition. Fukuyama explains two patterns of thymos: 1) isothymia, referring to the desire for equal recognition in terms of dignity, values, and identity, and 2) megalothymia, representing the desire for recognition as superior. The findings in this article indicate that religious identity politics in Indonesia are reflected through these two patterns of isothymia and megalothymia, evident in the tumultuous journey of marginalized local belief identities and in identity politics directed towards religion-based dominations.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze religious enthusiasm that does not continue after the primary school period is over and instead shows contrasting situations. Urban Muslims in Purwokerto, Indonesia, show high religious enthusiasm when choosing primary schools for their children. The number of public elementary school students has declined in the last five years, while Madrasah Ibtida'iyyah has increased dramatically. This research is field-type with data sources from urban Muslims who choose Madrasah Ibtida'iyyah as a primary school choice for their children. The data were analyzed qualitatively using a sociological approach. The study found that the religious enthusiasm of urban Muslims is pragmatic. Their pragmatic nature is shown by the resistance of different social groups that give rise to covert conflicts. In addition, they form new communities that actively represent them in public spaces. This finding has implications for a change in the perspective of the phenomenon of religious enthusiasm from theological awareness to a new trend of community-based urban Muslim pragmatism. Further research recommended the representation of the new identity of Muslim communities in virtual public spaces. Tulisan ini bertujuan menganalisis antusiasme keagamaan orang tua yang tidak berlanjut pada jenjang pendidikan setelah Sekolah Dasar dan justru menunjukkan situasi yang kontras. Muslim perkotaan di Purwokerto, Indonesia, menunjukkan antusiasme agama yang tinggi dalam memilih Sekolah Dasar untuk anak-anak mereka. Jumlah siswa Sekolah Dasar Negeri mengalami penurunan dalam lima tahun terakhir, sebaliknya Madrasah Ibtida'iyyah meningkat secara drastis.. Penelitian ini berjenis lapangan dengan sumber data dari kelompok muslim perkotaan yang memilih Madrasah Ibtida'iyyah sebagai pilihan sekolah dasar untuk anak-anak mereka. Data dianalisis secara kualitatif dengan menggunakan pendekatan sosiologis. Studi ini menemukan bahwa antusiasme keagamaan muslim perkotaan bersifat pragmatis. Sifat pragmatis mereka ditunjukkan melalui perlawanan dan menimbulkan konflik terselubung. Selain itu, mereka membentuk komunitas baru yang secara aktif merepresentasikannya di ruang publik. Temuan ini berimplikasi pada perubahan perspektif fenomena antusiasme keagamaan dari kesadaran teologis ke kecenderungan baru pragmatisme. Penelitian lebih lanjut merekomendasikan representasi identitas baru komunitas muslim di ruang publik virtual.
