Abstract

al-Madīḥ al-nabawī has traditionally been regarded as an expression of love for the Prophet Muhammad, encompassing accounts of his birth, miracles, praises, prayers, and hopes. However, recently, al-madīḥ al-nabawī has not only aimed to praise the Prophet but has also been transformed to serve the purpose of constructing specific discourses. Nahj al-Burdah by ‘Abd al-Ḥamīd, which includes praises of the Prophet, is suspected of containing the agenda of puritanism and criticism of religious practices deemed inconsistent with the Qur’an and Sunnah. This paper aims to uncover the discourse of puritanization in Nahj al-Burdah through Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis approach. The research reveals that Nahj al-Burdah contains puritanical discourse against excessive praise of the Prophet. This is demonstrated through the textual dimension containing ideological words and the discourse practice where the text is produced in the context of the Wahhabi reform movement to support what it believes as the purification of Islamic teachings and distributed by media and newspapers in Saudi Arabia to shape readers’ understanding of the importance of following the teachings of the salaf al-ṣāliḥ. Meanwhile, from a sociocultural practice perspective, Nahj al-Burdah serves as an effective tool for promoting puritanical discourse and reinforcing religious and political authority in Saudi Arabia during that period. al-Madīḥ al-nabawī selama ini hanya dianggap sebagai bentuk ekspresi kecintaan terhadap Nabi Muhammad yang memuat sejarah kelahiran, mukjizat, pujian, doa dan harapan.

Abstract

This research paper, titled explores the conceptualization of time in the Qur'an and its integration into Islamic epistemology through Al-Ghazali’s theoretical framework. The study addresses the research problem of how Qur'anic depictions of time intersect with contemporary scientific theories, particularly focusing on their implications for understanding the nature of time and its relevance to modern scientific and philosophical discussions. Utilizing a secondary descriptive analysis methodology, the research systematically reviews and compares Qur'anic verses about time with current scientific theories such as Einstein's theory of relativity and cosmological concepts. The aim is to identify points of convergence and divergence between Qur'anic insights and scientific understandings, enriching the discourse on the interplay between religious wisdom and empirical knowledge. The findings reveal a harmonious interaction between spiritual and scientific narratives, demonstrating that the Qur'an’s portrayal of time as a complex, relative phenomenon aligns with modern scientific perspectives. This integration of the Integration of Knowledge (IOK) concept fosters a holistic understanding of time, bridging theological and scientific viewpoints and contributing to broader discussions in political and democratic domains. The study underscores the significance of interdisciplinary knowledge in addressing societal issues and highlights the potential for mutual enrichment between ancient wisdom and contemporary science. Future research should continue to explore these intersections and their implications for education and societal development.

Abstract

This study investigates the ways in which the contemporary viral public sermons, Hanan Attaki’s Sharing Time, represented in the contemporary viral public sermons, intertwine the roles of social media, the youth movement, and piety included within the religious commodification. The author also examines how, in this disruptive age, the piety of young people could be addressed with the given religious teachings or da’wah he offers. This research also explores the complex relationship between young Muslim ide in Indonesia, and social media. It can be examined as to how social media platforms and digital technology influence the phenomena of viral public sermons. It observes the shift in Islamic traditions, the emergence of skepticism, and the dynamics of Islam and the modern world especially in the technological world. Religious populism, together with the new authority that has emerged due to the changes in religious expression and participation due to social media have altered the dynamics of religious discourses. This paper pays further attention to the urbanization process, the ‘Pop Islam’ phenomena, and the hijrah movement as a critical development in the emerging forms of Muslim religiosity in contemporary Indonesia. Discussing the relation of identity and piety together, it focuses on the commercialization of religion and the entwinement of tradition and modernity in Islamic popular culture. This essay highlights the fluidity of cultural change in Indonesian Muslims’ youth identity through the Hijrah movement that metaphorically represents change in identity, and furthermore underscores the daily struggle between tradition and modernity within the Indonesian Muslim community.

Abstract

This study explains the essence of mamakiah tradition, which is currently misunderstood by society, which simply sees mamakiah as begging for sadakah or alms and begging. This research was conducted on several surau that still carrie out the mamakiah tradition. This study uses qualitative approaches, such as conducting in-depth interviews with surau or madrasa leaders, as well as students studying at surau, including those who still embrace the mamakiah tradition and those who have abandoned it. Observations were also made on how the mamakiah process is carried out. This study found that mamakiah tradition was a religious expression in the past. However, in its development, this custom was used as a method for developing the mindsets (mental testing) of students learning in surau in order to become future ulama. At the same time, this tradition provided an opportunity for these students to implement their religious knowledge (kaji) into practice in Surau.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the relationship and impact between Sumatra Thawalib Padang Panjang and Thawalib Islamiyah Al Rawaniyah in Kerinci. Sumatra Thawalib is one model of Islamic education reform that has provided many changes and influences on the existence and educational institutions in Minangkabau and Kerinci. Before the 19th century AD, Kerinci had received educational influence from Minangkabau. From the use of surau to the emergence of Thawalib in Kerinci, there are at least two things that were formulated, namely the impact of Sumatra Thawalib on Thawalib Islamiyah and the relationship between the two educational institutions. The research method used is the historical method, which takes four stages: heuristics (data collection), source criticism, synthesis and historiography (writing). The research results show that the presence of Thawalib Islamiyah Al Rawaniyah in Kerinci was influenced by the Sumatra Thawalib Padang Panjang in the form of institutions, learning methods and curriculum. Thawalib Islamiyah Al Rawaniyah is a duplication of Sumatra Thawalib with several modifications. Therefore, a synergistic relationship between the two agencies is built.

Abstract

While the Tabligh Jamaat is perceived as phenomenal in its acts of worship (appearing distinct from most other Muslim groups), it demonstrates moderate behavior in societal interactions. In line with other research findings, the Tabligh Jamaat is regarded as a politically neutral organization, which calls for further exploration of its position in implementing the values of religious moderation. Thus, the study of religious moderation becomes a significant area of focus. This paper presents research findings on the extent to which the values of religious moderation are implemented by the Tabligh Jamaat community in Pekanbaru, while also introducing a new orientation in their da'wah (Islamic preaching) as a form of novelty. This study employs a qualitative method with a snowball sampling technique. This method was chosen because snowball sampling facilitates the identification of key informants or leaders within community groups. Starting with one primary informant, the researcher can gain access to other individuals with relevant knowledge or experience. The findings reveal that the development of Tabligh Jamaat's da'wah in Pekanbaru has progressed beyond grassroots efforts to become a movement with clear directions and trends, particularly in educational institutions (pesantren). It was found that the implementation of religious moderation in Pekanbaru is characterized by respect for differences in Islamic schools of thought (madhhab), avoidance of fanaticism, and prioritization of the unity of the ummah (Muslim community). The orientation and methods that have emerged include the adjustment of da'wah methods, a contextual da'wah approach, collective and pragmatic involvement, as well as active and dialogical engagement.

Abstract

Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) services have gained significant popularity among Indonesian customers, particularly within the younger demographic that values convenience and flexibility in online shopping. This research uses a qualitative approach to examine the applications of Islamic law on the utilization of BNPL inside digital transactions in Indonesia, while also assessing its effects on consumer behavior and economic stability. The findings indicate that although Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) provides ease and accessibility for consumers, substantial obstacles exist in aligning this practice with maqāṣid sharia principles, especially with usury and consumer protection issues. Factors such as financial literacy, governmental laws, and product transparency significantly impact the adoption of BNPL, shaping customer comprehension and utilization of these services. Islamic financial institutions bear a significant obligation to deliver several itemsthat not only meet the demands of consumers but also sharia compliance. As such, this research contributes to strengthening the integration between digital technology and the financial system, as well as supporting sustainable economic growth that is compliant with Shariah principles.

Abstract

This study examines the theological principles underlying the social empowerment efforts implemented for the punk community at Pondok Tasawuf Underground Jakarta, focusing on articulating theological values in the context of empowerment and their implementation in daily life. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, several data in this study were collected through in-depth interviews with the founder and members of the punk community, participatory observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the theological principles underlying empowerment at Pondok Tasawuf Underground are rooted in holistic hijrah, encompassing both spiritual and social transformation. The "Roadmap to Return" program serves as the core agenda, consisting of two main paths: the Roadmap to Return to Allah, which emphasizes religious education and spiritual awareness, and the Roadmap to Return to Family, which underscores social responsibility and family relationship restoration. The principle of human equality serves as the theological foundation of this empowerment effort, affirming the universal dignity of every individual regardless of their background. The implementation of the theology of empowerment includes skill training, social assistance, and spiritual strengthening, significantly transforming the punk community from a marginalized group into productive individuals.
