Abstract

SPELL ELC (Special Programs for English Language & Literacy English Language and Communication) Sidoarjo was established in 2001. Three programs that SPELL ELC has: Academic English, Business English, and Children English. SPELL ELC’s competitor is EF (English First) Sidoarjo. SPELL ELC’s problem is lack of students outside Sidoarjo. Therefore, the best solution to solve this problem is to make a company profile video. A company profile video can reach the customers who live outside Sidoarjo. The solution was made following the theory of Rockman (2017) in order to deliver the information effectively. Survey and interview were conducted to get the USP. Dandy (2020) mentioned that the solution will give four benefits for the company. The benefits are: it helps the customers to know the company’s brand, it can cover the company’s shortcomings, it can be an effective promotional tool, and it can build good images for the company.              Keywords: company profile video, brand awareness, English course

Abstract

News is the way to let public know about certain occurrences around the world. In Indonesia, the case of Ahok which has been sentenced for two years has been an international phenomenon. There are two factions which are opposite two each other about the case. Thus, report which can be found in the news may have different perspectives, depending on the writers’ views. There are bias and framing which leads people on the writer’s perspective. This paper will try to analyze two news articles on Basuki Tjahaja Purnama’scase which are taken from antaranews.com and hrw.org using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The data will be examined using transitivity analysis which can reveal the different perspectives of these two news articles by breaking down the sentences which shows the participants, process and circumstances involved. At the end of this paper, it shows how the difference in using of participants, process and circumstances creates different perspectives of the writer.

Abstract

As a modernized version of the folktale Jaka Tarub dan Tujuh Bidadari, 7 Wonders applies the view that women should perform the Javanese concept of three Ms: masak, macak, and manak to please men while also acting weak around them. However, in the story, Nawang Wulan’s actions do not indicate that she is weak. Instead, she can prove that she is a powerful woman who can construct her strategies to reach her goals. Thus, this study aims to discuss that the Nawang Wulan’s strategies are altering their looks, using her support, and acting as weak woman. Each of the strategy displays her power and freedom to use the Javanese concepts of three Ms to please Jaka Tarub. As a result, she can persuade the him to help her reach her goals, and thus proves that her strategies can be used to control the him.Keywords: Folktale, Girl Power, Men, Strategy, Women

Abstract

This thesis is a materials evaluation using communicative criteria. This topic is chosen considering that coursebooks are important teaching tools and communication ability is now a standard in pedagogical field. It aims to find the communicative criteria applied in the coursebooks. The writer attempts to find the criteria application and finds that the materials in the coursebooks apply to some extent the communicative criteria concerning the language knowledge, interaction, and language practice and use. The materials in the coursebooks are analyzed with constructed communicative criteria from Communicative Language Teaching principles by Larsen-Freeman and Anderson (2011). This study method is qualitative. The data are taken from English coursebooks for 10th Year of Public Senior High Schools in Indonesia. In conclusion, the coursebooks are fairly communicative because most materials apply one or more communicative criteria, except for materials in Vocabulary and Pronunciation sections. Further studies can be conducted on the materials suitability with students’ needs, the language skills and components and communicative competence taught.

Abstract

The number of intercultural marriages is increasing globally over time. In Indonesia, around 10% of the total population of Indonesian did lifetime migration which implies the high possibility of intercultural marriage. The couple must have several problems with communication due to different cultural and educational backgrounds. Therefore in this study, the researcher intends to find out the communication problems related to language and culture between a Chinese-Indonesian wife and a Taiwanese husband, and how they manage the problems using the communication competence they develop over cultural differences. The findings suggest that the wife sometimes has language misinterpretation with her parents-in-law due to the inability to speak Taiwanese. In relevance to culture, the wife employs sungkan on many occasions, while the husband is affected by the patriarchal culture and money-saving habits of the Taiwanese. Knowledge and skills are essential for the couple to manage their communication problem.Key words: Intercultural marriage; intercultural communication; communication competence; communication problems

Abstract

In this study, the writer discussed types of teacher role in Writing 3 class at English Department of Petra Christian University. The purpose of this study was to find out the types of teacher roles and different treatments between regular and repeater students. The subject of this study was a lecturer teaching Writing 3 class at English Department of Petra Christian University. The theories used by the writer were types of teacher roles in writing class by Harmer (2007) and Richards (2015). The writer used classroom observation and video recording to collect the data. The findings of this study revealed that there were eight types of teacher role out of nine seen in Writing 3 class which were resource/facilitator, feedback provider/evaluator, motivator, expert writer, cultural informant, collaborator, investigator, and problem solver. As for the treatment, there were different treatments between regular and repeater students. From this study, it could be concluded that the teacher played eight roles out of nine types of teacher roles based on what the students needed and the teacher gave more attention to the repeater students.  Key words: Teacher roles, repeater students, regular students, treatment

Abstract

This thesis is about a study of the interruptions produced by the Moluccan students in a fellowship meeting, consisting of fifteen students as the respondents, who are divided into two: the chairperson and the members. The purposes of the study are to know the tokens and the functions of interruptions used by the chairperson and the members of the meeting by considering social role as the social factor. The writer applies the theory of interruptions by Tannen (1990) and Wardhaugh (1985) as the main theories. Besides, the writer also uses the theory of social role by Johnstone (2008) and the theory of discourse markers by Schiffrin (2003) as the supporting theories. The writer used qualitative approach to conduct this research. The writer discovered that the chairperson produced more tokens (19) than the members (13). Moreover, the writer found that the respondents produced Ambonese tokens, such as “Hiii”, “Weee”, “Seng”, “Eee”, and Suroboyoan tokens, such as “Lho” and “Itulho”. Both the chairperson and the members produced “other” functions the most with 58.75% and 63.81%. In conclusion, social role influenced the interruptions and their functions, and the number of tokens produced by the participants.

Abstract

This study is about communication strategies used by the students of twelfth grade and teacher’s responses when they were having an integrated English class. The writer used Mariani’s (2010) theory. The subjecs of the study were 19 students and 1 teacher. The source of data was the students’ and teacher’s utterances during the two meetings. The data were the students’ and teacher’s utterances, (verbal and non-verbal (gestures, eye contact, facial expressions)) which contain communication strategies related to the topic learning. The findings of this study revealed that students used four types of Communication Strategies: Meaning-expression, Meaning-negotiation, Conversation-management and Para- and extra linguistic. The students used these strategies mostly because they were unsure how to answer the teacher’s question and did not know the meaning of the word. The writer hopes that there would be a further study which focused about conversation or speaking class.

Abstract

This Business Communication Final Project (BCFP) is made for PT. Telkom Surabaya mergoyo,tbk, a company which offers service in telecommunications and internet service provider in Indonesia. The problem of the project is how to promote the products and services that Wico 2.0 offers. Using the BCFP, the promotional video will be able to help the marketing and the sales to sell the company’s product and also make the customers aware with the uniqueness of the products. The promotional video contains the products of Wico 2.0 and the Uniqueness of Wico 2.0 itself. The video shows facilites of Wico 2.0. The promotion video also explains the benefits of Wico 2.0. Using this BCFP, the customers will be know more about Wico 2.0. Abstract

This thesis is the study of types and functions of questions based on features of classroom discourse. In this study, the writer observed the types of questions that the English teacher used in General English classroom, and the functions of the questions based on features of classroom discourse. The data were collected through classroom observation and audio-recording of one class of the sixth grade. The theories applied are the teachers’ questions by Ellis (2008) and types of questions and features of classroom discourse by Walsh (2011). The qualitative approach was used in this study. The finding revealed that the teacher used two types of questions which were display questions and referential questions in the two meetings. Each meeting took 40 until 50 minutes. In addition, the teacher used three functions of questions based on features of classroom discourse, which are control of procedure, checking understanding, and eliciting a response. The finding also revealed that display questions have the function of checking understanding while referential questions have the functions of control of procedure, checking understanding and eliciting a response. In conclusion, questions can be considered as a tool for the teacher to check the students’ understanding and to elicit the students’ responses during teaching and learning process
