Abstract

This creative work follows the journey of the daughter of a prostitute, in her attempt to survive after being kicked out of the house and find the biological mother whom she never met. It explores the theme of patriarchal culture that impacts prostitution industry and the complication of it.This realistic fiction novel was set in three countries which are China (Hong-Kong), Singapore, and Indonesia. The story highlights the reasons women enter prostitution explored in Barry’s The Prostitution of Sexuality theory, and the physical and pyscho-social impacts of slut-shaming happened to women prostitute explored in Benoit et al’s Theory of Social Stigma among Prostitutes. It will also be elaborated on how patriarchy impacts both issues. Through these theories and project, I find that patriachy causes many women decided to enter prostitution as it’s the best choice they have at hand even though the work itself oftentime harms them physically and pyscho-socially through the whore-stigma that operates on the micro, meso, and macro level of their lives. Keywords: patriarchal culture, women prostitution, whore-stigma, slut-shaming.

Abstract

Gunawangsa Manyar Hotel is a three star hotel in the East of Surabaya. As a three star hotel, Gunawangsa Manyar Hotel also has competitors such as Swiss BelInn Manyar Hotel, Fave Hotel, Core Hotel, and Everbright Hotel. It means the tools they have are ineffective. Therefore, to introduce the hotel effectively, marketing booklet is the good solution for Gunawangsa Hotel since marketing booklet brings complete information needed by potential customers. The content of the booklet consists of company overview, product description, and contact information. In the product description, the USPs would be more emphasized. The USPs are obtained by the interview result with six guests of Gunawangsa Manyar Hotel.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss the illocutionary acts produced by Kate Reddy in “I don’t Know How She Does It” movie, in the business communication with her business partner (Jack Abelhammer) and her boss (Clark). To support this study, the writer uses the theory of speech act by Austin (1962) and Paltridge (2006), illocutionary keywords by Searle (1969,1975), and the theory of context by Gee (2005). This research is a descriptive qualitative research because it is used it to form a descriptive qualitative conclusion to describe the illocutionary act occures in the conversation in this movie. From the findings, the writer finds out that  in order to make a sucessful business conversation, Kate produced four types of illocutionary acts to both her partner and her boss: representatives, directives, commissives, and expressives. Based on the findings, there are three similarities that the writer found: 1) the illocutionary act which is not used by Kate to her interlocutors is declarative, 2) the stage of illocutionary act produced by Kate to her interlocutors is the same to each other, and 3) there are the illocutionary act that is rejected by her interlocutors. Besides, the differences are also related to the use of various subtypes of Illocutionary act used by Kate to her partner and to her boss. Finally, the writer concludes that Illocutionary act plays an important role in Kate’s utterances since it helps Kate to state her intended meaning behind her utterances; to make a statement  to convince, to give suggestions, to make request and many more, to her interlocutors in their business conversation

Abstract

This study focuses on finding out the rhetorical devices used by Simon Sinek when delivering an inspirational speech and how they affect Simon Sinek’s inspirational speech. In this study, the writer used Harris’ (2018) theory of rhetorical question and Gregory’s (2018) theory of general purposes of speech to analyze the data. The writer employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The findings showed that Simon Sinek uses alliteration, parallelism, antithesis, and simile when delivering his speech. The missing device is metaphor because metaphor allows different interpretations, decreases the level of clarity in a speech. Each rhetorical devices affects the speech differently. Alliteration affects the speech using melody; parallelism with repetition and rhythm; antithesis with contrast, complexity, balance, and emphasis; and simile with vivid image, sense of familiarity, and clarity. Ultimately, rhetorical devices affect the inspirational speech in a positive way as they help amplify the meaning of the speech.

Abstract

PT. Essentra is a manufacturer located in Sidoarjo which produces cigarette filters and tear tape for cigarette packaging. The main problem that happened in the company is the ineffective way to introduce and promote company’s product as the marketing team only uses product presentation slide as their tool. While giving product presentation, customers often get bored as it covers lot of explanation and take long time to finish one presentation. Therefore, the solution I offered for the company is to make a marketing booklet. This marketing booklet consists of information regarding the company and explanation of cigarette filter products along with the benefits that customers will have. This solution will help PT. Essentra in promoting its products and fulfill the customers’ request related to a tool for them to review the company’s products. By having this marketing booklet, it can help the company to introduce and promote its products and fulfill the customers’ request of a tool for reviewing the company’s products which PT. Abstract

This study aims to prove that Sibyl System is the Panopticon and to analyze the causes of dystopia in Gen Urobuchi’s Psycho Pass. In Psycho Pass, Sibyl System is the governing system which possesses a resemblance to the Panopticon. It implies that Sibyl System may actually be a Panopticon; thus, we want to prove this using the theory of the Panopticon by Michel Foucault. Moreover, Sibyl System shows signs of being the cause of the dystopian society in Psycho Pass even though it was designed to create utopia. To find out more about this, we analyze each characteristic of the dystopian society and trace their causes to Sibyl System’s aspects. Through the analysis, by comparing Sibyl System’s aspects to six of the Panopticon’s aspects, it is found that Sibyl System is indeed a Panopticon, and these panoptic aspects with its loopholes are the causes of the dystopian society. In conclusion, a Panopticon such as Sibyl System, though designed with noble intentions, can have flaws that prove fatal in changing the society into a dystopian one

Abstract

Teen drama films, which usually consist of “finding self-identity”, usually talk about how the teenagers survive, trying to fit in the society so they can be accepted as another identity. My creative work is abouta girl who has been compared by her mother to her sister since her childhood and also being bullied because she does not have good grades, thus leads her to grow into a ball of inferiority and lose herself. She goes on a journey with her punk friends to find her father and finally, she finds her true self. The main subject matter for this creative work is self-identity. However, the theme is how social environment can make people feel inferior and shape someone’s identity. The theory used for this work is ‘Stages of Psychosocial Development’ by Erik Erikson. This theory helps to find the crisis inside a specific range of ages when the stage is not met.

Abstract

This article tries to reveal the clash of value between April and Frank as the main characters in Richard Yates’ Revolutionary Road. Using the theories of gender role, power and motherhood, the analysis shows that April and Frank have different values even though they live in the same time, the1950s. The differences of values create a clash between them and it affects their relationship as husband and wife. April Wheeler as the strong character in this novel has modern values from her era while her husband expects her to follow the value of the1950s. These differences make them unable to fulfill their partner’s expectation. It can be concluded that because their values conflict each other, they have difficulties in their marriage life.

Abstract

This thesis aims to give pictures of the American values in an American cultural product, Bethesda’s Elder Scroll V: Skyrim. I will use ideology as the concept to show that cultural products contain ideologies or values of the dominant group. The study shows that in the games, traditional American values serve as the standard values of the American dominant group. Furthermore, I show that American values in the video game are the same, although some values are shifting. In conclusion, I find out that Elder Scroll V: Skyrim has all of the American traditional values. The medieval setting of the game somehow shifts some values like material wealth since bloodline status is appreciated. Thus, Elder Scroll V: Skyrim does represent the American society and how it should be.
