Abstract

This research was inspired by the advancements in technology within the education sector that have led to the adoption of online learning platforms, like Google Classroom, for teaching the English language. The purpose of the study is to investigate students’ views, feelings, and difficulties in using Google Classroom for English reading instruction. A quantitative descriptive methodology is used, relying on a survey approach. Data were gathered through an online questionnaire distributed to students who had experience with Google Classroom. The findings suggest that students have favorable views and attitudes towards Google Classroom, especially in terms of the accessibility of materials, enhanced reading comprehension, and a sense of comfort during the learning experience. However, several challenges were identified, including internet connectivity issues, data plan costs, and limited internet speeds. These findings indicate that Google Classroom is an effective learning platform for supporting English reading instruction, though technical obstacles remain to be addressed. Therefore, the use of Google Classroom needs to be optimized to account for the readiness of the technological infrastructure, enabling the learning process to run more effectively.

Abstract

This study investigates how motivation can evolve over time within a fee-based private English course in East Java, Indonesia. Most existing studies have focused on formal educational contexts, and we investigate the realities of what can happen when participation is completely voluntary, meaning learners can actively disengage from learning at any time. This was carried out using Dörnyei's L2 Motivational Self System and Self-Determination Theory frame for motivation, following 18 students aged between 9 to 15 over a period of six months. Data were gathered via reflective journals & semi-structured interviews. The study found motivation in this context was not static, with motivation varying according to how students perceive the class atmosphere, teacher behavior, activities and their own feelings of progression. While many students were influenced by their parents to sign up for the course, they continued to attend feeling that they were being supported and they could do it. Little moments when they received something as simple as praise or were able to successfully complete something had an impact on their motivation and as such, the little praise was not insignificant. If learners encountered a situation where a task felt too difficult, or they did not receive feedback, motivation was lost which sometimes meant they stopped attending. Younger learners appeared to be more affected by if the class felt enjoyable, as older learners began to care about their future aspirations more. The study concludes that in non-formal English education, emotional security and meaningful teacher-student relationships are more crucial than rigid curricula or disciplinary structures.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze changes in attitudes of high school students in rural areas towards learning English using a qualitative descriptive approach through literature study. Students' attitudes towards English are an important aspect in successful learning, which is influenced by pedagogical, social, and emotional factors. Through an analysis of various academic literature sources, this study found that students' attitudes tend to change positively over time when supported by a communicative, contextually relevant learning approach, and involving the use of interesting media. The results also indicate that more self-confidence, teacher support, peer interaction, and support of family collectively increased students’ motivation of learning English. Those students with low socioeconomic status had the most positive changes in attitudes in inclusive and supportive learning environments. The study highlights that learning attitudes are dynamic and impacted by an interconnected combination of internal and external influences. For these reasons, developing educational policies and teaching strategies that take into account the affective side are crucial to developing the success of English learning in rural Indonesia.

Abstract

This study explores the learning strategies used in English learning by the vocational high school students who were supported with KIP money in Babat, Lamongan. While the financial support from KIP has improved access to education, the learning outcomes are leaving students with incomplete literacy skills and far away from declared welfare statuses, especially with respect to foreign language learning and language acquisition. The study employed a qualitative descriptive case study design, and involved 45 KIP students in Babat, Lamongan, and SILL questionnaire, interviews, and academic performance data were collected. The study found the most common strategies were metacognitive strategies (which included planning, self-regulating, and effective monitoring), and highest achievers and lower achievers were more likely to use social strategies. Different constraints of contexts played a role among students' variables for participating in learning, such as having materials and supportive parents, and those using internal regulation, were able to demonstrate great academic resilience to learn English. This study concludes that learning strategies for English learning, particularly metacognitive strategy, are only a few causes of English achievement based on learned behaviour, access, and material and monetary assistance.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of reading Khilma Anis’s novel Wigati: Lintang Manik Woro as a work of pesantren literature that brings together religiosity, Javanese culture, the world of keris, and Javanese women’s identity. In this context, Javanese women are often positioned within the tension between the values of politeness, obedience, religiosity, and the capacity to negotiate tradition. This study aims to explain the construction of Javanese women’s identity in Wigati: Lintang Manik Woro through Leech and Short’s stylistic approach. The main problem of this research stems from the tension between the normative image of Javanese women, which is often associated with politeness, obedience, and an attitude of nriman, and the representation of female characters in the novel who appear active in tracing their origins, interpreting inheritance, and negotiating the authority of pesantren and Javanese culture. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through library research, close reading, note-taking, and data coding. The primary data source is the ninth edition of the novel Wigati: Lintang Manik Woro, published in 2019. The research data consist of words, phrases, sentences, dialogues, and narratives that contain lexical, grammatical, figurative language, cohesion, and contextual categories as proposed by Leech and Short. The data analysis is supported by Stuart Hall’s theory of representation to interpret identity as a textual construction shaped through language. The results of the study show that pesantren religious diction, Javanese cultural vocabulary, keris-related terminology, short sentences, repetition, interrogative forms, keris metaphors, and the context of pesantren and Javanese culture function as means of representing Javanese women’s identity. This identity is constructed as that of a female santri who is religious and knowledgeable, a cultural inheritor, an nriman yet non-passive individual, a wounded inner subject, and a woman capable of negotiating patriarchal norms. Thus, language in the novel does not merely function as an aesthetic element but also becomes a space for producing Javanese women’s identity that is layered, negotiated, and continuously shaped through linguistic practices.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and examine the feasibility of the Mass and Quantity Wheel (ROMAKU) as a mathematics learning medium for elementary school students. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, which consists of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The trial was conducted with 10 fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 3 Pandanpancur. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Media validity was analyzed using Aiken’s V, practicality was measured through student response questionnaires, and effectiveness was analyzed using the N-Gain method. The results showed that the ROMAKU learning media achieved a validity score of 0.82 categorized as very valid, a practicality score of 0.80 categorized as practical, and an effectiveness score with an N-Gain value of 0.64 in the moderate category. These findings indicate an improvement in students’ understanding of mass units and quantity concepts after using the ROMAKU media. Therefore, the ROMAKU media is considered feasible as an alternative concrete, manipulative, and interactive mathematics learning medium to support meaningful learning in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study examined eleventh-grade students' ability to write short stories based on personal experience at SMAN 2 Kefamenanu. The main focus of this research was to analyze five aspects of writing short stories, namely content, organization, grammar, mechanics, and vocabulary, as well as the level of ability and difficulty of the students in writing short stories. It applied a qualitative and quantitative approach with tests and interviews as the instrument. The results showed that students had a "good" level of writing ability, with an average score of 81.31. However, some students still encountered difficulties in several aspects of writing, namely grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, and content. These difficulties occurred because students could not combine good sentences, lacked vocabulary, could not place punctuation marks and capital letters correctly, and could not explain the meaning of the topic they had determined. Therefore, errors occurred in their writing. The study provided advice for teachers to improve their teaching methods.

Abstract

This study looks at how short-form video platforms—more especially, TikTok and Instagram Reels—have affected students' English language confidence. This study was driven by the growing prevalence of social media among adolescents and its possible role as a medium for expressive, communicative, and reflective learning. A quasi-experimental design of the non-equivalent control group type was used in a quantitative approach. 30 eighth-graders from a junior high school in Turi, Lamongan, participated in the study. They were split into 2 groups: 15 in the experimental group and 15 in the control group. Speaking exercises and a Likert-scale confidence questionnaire were included in the pre-test and post-test used to collect data. Using SPSS version 26, the data was analysed using paired sample t-tests, independent sample t-tests, descriptive statistics, and normality and homogeneity tests, The findings indicated a notable enhancement in the experimental group, which achieved a post-test average of 77.13, in contrast to 65.20 in the control group. The independent sample t-test yielded a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05), demonstrating a statistically significant effect of the treatment. The findings are consistent with Self-Determination Theory (SDT), which highlights the importance of relatedness, competence, and autonomy in promoting learning motivation and self-assurance. Short-form videos are recommended by the research as a new way to boost students' speaking confidence during English language training.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of strategies and challenges encountered in storytelling instruction for fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 2 Sumita. This research uses a qualitative approach. The data collection methods and instruments used were observation and interviews. The study was conducted at SD Negeri 2 Sumita, with the research subjects being fourth-grade students and their classroom teacher. The results of the study show that: (1) the teacher implemented various storytelling strategies that were communicative, participatory, and interactive. The strategies included the use of visual media such as picture series and videos, small group discussions, practice sessions for storytelling in front of the class, and the provision of direct feedback on students' performances. Each lesson began with a clear explanation of the learning objectives, continued with core activities that actively involved students, and concluded with reinforcement and relevant follow-up assignments. These strategies proved effective in enhancing student participation, creativity, and confidence in oral storytelling; (2) the main challenges faced by the teacher included differences in students’ abilities to construct and deliver stories, lack of self-confidence among some students when speaking in front of the class, limited instructional time, and the lack of varied teaching media. Although strategies and media had been used optimally, these obstacles still hindered equitable learning outcomes. To address these issues, the teacher began to apply a gradual approach through small groups and planned to integrate more engaging digital learning technologies to better accommodate students' needs in a flexible and inclusive manner.
