Abstract

Islam as a doctrine has a unique relationship with culture. The uniqueness was emerging when Islam as a doctrine has to confront a tradition living in a community. This study discusses how the sculptors in Prumpung Magelang negotiate and compromise betwen the two of opposite entities in the comunity, that is (1) religious doctrines (sourced from authoritative texts) about the prohibition of crafting the image of living being, and (2) cultural and artistic practices of making living being as perfect objects of artistic passion. This research attempts to explore and understand the creative reasoning model of some sculptors in the area of Prumpung Magelang when they have to appreciate their artistic passion in sculpture without having to confront the meaning of authoritative texts. Through a reception theory approach, this research concluded that the compromise and negoitation of two opposite entities which often creates polemics in the community can be accommodated in a work of art with objects of living things but still within the corridors and boundaries allowed by the text authority (hadith).

Abstract

Writing on Islamand things Islamic has a long history in the West, but has seen a growth in 20thcentury and an unprecedented surgeafter the events of 9/11 (2001)—both because of Islam’s ‘global’ spread and ‘growing global impact’ as well as its diverse interpretations and explanations. Among this plethora of literature, a major portion is devoted to the Islamic historyand its inter-related aspects, in the form of ‘introductory’ reference books. These are primarily targeted for (under) graduate student community as well as for the general people interested in knowing about the faith and beliefs of 1.6 billion Muslims, living globally. Abstract

The article is based on first findings of interdisciplinary research that is still in progress. It has to be understood as the science-based counter-speech against increasing anti-Muslim racism. Young Muslims are under surveillance of public and media attention in Germany. Islam is being debated in terms of regal and security politics and less within the signature of religion in terms of spirituality, aesthetics, life-world orientation, ethics, morale and religious life-styles. Hence, they are being transformed into a kind of ethnic tribe that needs special treatment. This comes along with the impending deployment of religious freedom as it is guaranteed by the German constitution. Especially right-wing nationalist and folkish consent has it that Muslims serve as a reason for redesigning religious politics in Germany that drifts away from the standards of human rights. The research findings presented here focus on juvenile Muslims as humans, pupils and citizens instead. It aims at a better understanding of their psychological and social framing. This plays an important role with regard to schooling in general and Islamic religious education in special. The findings are based upon the qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews. This contribution also takes theological and anthropological aspects into account. In the end preliminary recommendations for changes in the educational setting are given.

The subject of Quran and Hadits is part of the subject of Religious Education in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah and Madrash Tsanawiyah, and the purpose is to enable students to understand Quran and Hadist as the sources of Islamic teaching. The subject of hadits is the hadits which really refer to Prophet Muhammad with the valid (shahih) chain of hadits narators. There are nine textbooks of Quran and Hadits that are learned depending on the numbers of class. There are 31 hadits as main materials to be discussed and other hadits as supporting materials. The data (hadits) is analyzed using criticts of hadits. The finding of the research reveals that not all materials of hadits taught in madrasah are valid (sahih), some hadits are very poor (weak), and its authenticity is doubtful and even some hadits are false (not authentic).
