Abstract

This research aims to explore local wisdom in a pluralistic society that has been employed by the Female Farmers Group (Kelompok Wanita Tani), also called KWT Dewi Sri, in taking a social role for empowering rural cross-faith women in the hamlet of Kemasan. To implement its vision for local prosperity, KWT Dewi Sri has helped rural women by facilitating socio-empowerment services and informal education for those who are in need. KWT Dewi Sri has given interreligious social services so that the women can build social harmony and thus overcome the cynical assumption that poverty is the fate of being a woman. While embracing the value of benevolent citizenship, KWT Dewi Sri has persuaded these interfaith women to use rational choices to eradicate prejudice against others in general and stigmatisation against women in particular. This research used the qualitative approach with empirical inquiry to explore the females’ accounts of empowering their fellow women and maintaining social harmony in the hamlet. The findings showed that by using adaptive strategies, KWT Dewi Sri demonstrated the benefits of applying preventive programs to counter the take for granted-assumption that being female always necessitates impoverishment. Amid such help and success, many women in the hamlet hold a view, as in Javanese mythology, that KWT Dewi Sri is the reincarnation of the goddess of prosperity (Dewi Sri) descended to empower the local women. This research will discuss the cultural values of KWT Dewi Sri in establishing harmonious lives among people of the hamlet and in empowering the local women, and the obstacles KWT Dewi Sri encounters in embracing its roles.

Abstract

During 2017-2019 a few cases of suicide amongst Christian teenagers in the city of Ambon have been linked to the infl uence of “suanggi” that has connotations of being the representation of an evil supernatural power. By using the qualitative research method with a case study approach, the article is focused on the religious reactions of the Christian community in their understanding and rationalization of these two phenomena. Data is collected through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and personal interviews. All collected qualitative data are analyzed by social hermeneutical analysis. The results of the study have shown that: (1) Social change that occurred amongst the people of Ambon has implications in the shift of traditional order of living values, at the same time clashes between the custodians of cultural traditions and morality (church) have occurred. (2) Within the Ambonese community, religion does not only symbolize certain systems of belief, but also becomes the institution that provides a place for the communal spirit and protects the shared morality through its teachings and the practice of its rituals. (3) The phenomena of suicide amongst teenagers in Ambon, the circulation of information concerning the influence of “suanggi”, and the reactive response of the Christian community reflects the clash between the insistence for social change amongst the urban communities.

Abstract

Corruption has become a global issue, whereas almost every country, whatever tough or slight it is, got to fight against it. It means that none of single country in the world is corruption free. This study analyzes anti-corruption policies and educational strategies enforced by Indonesian and Japanese Government. Data was collected through documentation and literature review, and to some extent, cultural behaviors of both countries were observed. This study used the theory of legal system by Lawrence M Friedman as an analysis method. The main research questions are: first, how are the Government’s policies enacted to eradicate corruption in Indonesia and Japan? Second, what educational strategies are implemented by both countries for combating corruption? Third, how Islamic perspective deals with anti-corruption practices? The research findings indicate several points: firstly, Indonesia has very complex social and cultural background if compared to Japan. Indeed Indonesia has some weaknesses such as weak of economic conditions, high levels of poverty, lack of political will, weak of cultural order, lack of honest and discipline attitudes, and lack of law enforcement. Indonesia’s anti-corruption policies enforced today is Act Number 31 of 1999, while Japan enacted several interrelated law compiled in Penal Codes (PC). Secondly, the implementation strategy for anti-corruption education in Indonesia is preventive, detective and repressive strategies. Meanwhile, Japan applies integrated strategies in social, political, economic, cultural, and education dimension. It is expected that the results of this study can contribute to the prevention and eradication of corruption in Indonesia more comprehensively, not only through legal means but education, especially higher education through internalization of moral and Islamic values of anti-corruption in all aspects of live.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic divides the attitudes of pesantren residents into three categories: very strict, very loose and moderate (tawassut). This moderate attitude is found in Pesma Al-Hikam and Pesantren Sabilurrosyad in Malang City. This article uses a qualitative approach, then analyzed from the perspective of Pierre Bourdieu’s capital theory. The purpose is to describe how the attitudes, mindset, and residents’ behavior of Pesantren Tangguh related to symbolic, cultural, social, and economic modalities, to control the pandemic crisis. The findings of this article are Pesma Al-Hikam and Pesantren Sabilurrosyad as Pesantren Tangguh are representations of moderate Islamic educational institutions during the Covid-19 pandemic in terms of Bourdieu’s capital theory. First, the nationalist-religious; adaptive and inclusive; and philosophical-rational character in terms of symbolic capital. Second, the theological view that combines destiny and endeavors harmoniously; an elastic and comparative view of Islamic law; and Sufistic behavior that combines ritual and social worship in terms of cultural capital. Third, the behaviour of pesantren residents who remain active in carrying out activities at the pesantren but are disciplined in complying with health protocols in terms of social capital. Fourth, the economic independence of the pesantren in fulfilling the needs and social assistance to the peripheral community in terms of economic capital. In summary, the residents of Pesantren Tangguh show moderate character in aspects of attitude, mindset, and behavior related to symbolic, cultural, social, and economic modalities, enabling the pesantren residents to be able to control the Covid-19 pandemic crisis well.

Abstract

The Indonesian nation with the motto “Bhineka Tunggal Ika” (Unity in Diversity) is a nation that believes in the beauty of pluralism as the primary model to build unity. Therefore, in building relationships that produce social integration, it should be characterized by acceptance and respect of pluralism and a willingness to learn from this pluralism. Unfortunately, the increasing number of conflicts results in the inability of society to tolerate differences, as seen in the nation’s self-identity becoming unstable. It is clear that the national identity needs to be reinforced through strategic steps that are systematic, clear-cut, and integrated, so that the national unity can be strongly united again. One of the ways to accomplish this is by learning from social integration that occurs in various locations in Indonesia. One such place is in Solor Village, Kupang.  In the midst of various conflicts that center on ethnic groups, race, religion, and class issues in Indonesia, the relationship between the indigenous people and newcomers in Solor Village offers an alternative for social integration that can occur in this “Unity in Diversity” nation. This is the focus of this research, which uses a descriptive-qualitative format to analyze social integration strategic issues between newcomers with different religious and cultural backgrounds from the native inhabitants of Solor Village. The research shows that Solor Village residents succeed in building a harmonious life because in facing multiculturalism, religious and cultural values play an important role.Harmonious life in Solor Village confirm that social integration that build on respect to pluralism is possible.
