Abstract

The Qur’an often employs words that appear to be synonyms but have subtle differences in meaning. Such is the case with the use of the terms bahr and yamm for the sea. This study explores why the Qur’an uses bahr in certain cases and yamm in others, with the hope of discovering the semantic meaning of bahr and its implications on the concept of mutaradif (synonyms) in the Qur’an. The inquiry is particularly relevant today, as the sea—an essential part of human life—is facing ecological dangers wrought by human actions. Adopting a qualitative library-research design, data were gathered from Qur’anic verses containing bahr yamm, classical and modern Arabic lexicons, and major tafsir works; analysis followed Izutsu’s semantic procedures (syntagmatic–paradigmatic mapping, synchronic–diachronic tracing, and worldview synthesis), with validity strengthened through source triangulation and peer/expert review. Using Toshihiko Izutsu’s semantic theory, this research analyzes the term bahr to identify its hidden meanings and its theological and ethical implications. Findings indicate a deliberate lexical differentiation: bahr extends beyond the physical sea toward divine taskhir, order, and benefit, whereas yamm appears predominantly in threat–punishment narratives. Taken together, the Qur’an does not employ near-synonyms interchangeably; this contrast clarifies Qur’anic diction and underpins a theological–ecoethical call to gratitude, restraint and responsible marine stewardship.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of rukhsah (legal concession) for menstruating women as articulated in the Qur’an, through a comparative analysis of two prominent exegetical works: Al-Jamiʿ li Ahkam al-Qurʾan by Al-Qurthubi and Tafsir al-Munir by Wahbah az-Zuhaili. Employing a qualitative library research design and the tafsir muqaran approach formulated by ʿAbd al-Hayy al-Farmawi, the study identifies, collects, and interprets relevant Qur’anic verses addressing menstruation and legal dispensations. The findings reveal a shared recognition of certain ritual prohibitions—such as prayer, fasting, sexual intercourse, and tawaf—yet notable divergences emerge in their views on Qur’anic recitation, mosque entry, and ritual purity. Al-Qurthubi maintains a more restrictive legal stance grounded in classical fiqh, while az-Zuhaili offers a more contextualized interpretation informed by contemporary realities, including advances in hygiene and medical understanding. This study introduces a novel comparative hermeneutical framework that bridges traditional and modern perspectives, contributing to the discourse on gender-sensitive Qur’anic interpretation. It underscores the potential for a more inclusive and practical application of Islamic legal principles for menstruating women in the modern era.

Abstract

This article presents research on the effectiveness of muroja'ah in prayer and its impact on the quality of Qur'anic memorization among memorizers in West Java, which is known as an important region in the development of hafidz through the SADESHA program. This study identifies the challenges faced by memorizers, especially those who have graduated from pesantren, in maintaining their memorization due to their busy schedules and lack of time for muroja'ah. Using a descriptive correlational approach with quantitative methods, this study involved statistical analysis to explore the relationship between muroja'ah in prayer and memorization quality. Data were collected through interviews and documentation, and analyzed using bivariate methods and various statistical tests. The results showed that muroja'ah in prayer has a significant influence on improving the quality of memorization in Pondok Tahfidz Generasi Rabbani Qur'ani, with a strong correlation between the two variables, thus providing a clear understanding of the importance of this practice in maintaining memorization of the Qur'an.

Abstract

This study examines the unique features of Rasm Utsmani and Rasm Imla’i, highlighting the ways these writing systems support the concept of i‘jaz Al-Qur’an, particularly in terms of their influence on meaning, word structure, and the aesthetic qualities of the Qur’anic language. Using a qualitative-descriptive method, the study conducts textual analysis on selected Qur’anic verses that exhibit orthographic differences between the two scripts. The data were collected through literature review, encompassing canonical mushaf, classical Qur’anic sciences, and contemporary scholarly discussions. The analysis reveals that Rasm Utsmani functions beyond a mere orthographic convention it carries symbolic layers that convey profound meanings and support the Qur’an’s miraculous nature. While Rasm Imla’i prioritizes phonetic clarity for ease of reading and writing, it tends to lack the visual depth and exegetical richness present in Rasm Utsmani. The study suggests that integrating both systems in Qur’anic pedagogy balancing readability with a deeper appreciation of divine linguistic structure can enhance comprehension and spiritual engagement with the text.

Abstract

The educational environment in Islam plays a strategic role in shaping students' character. This study aims to explore the concept of the academic environment from the perspective of the Qur'an and Hadith and analyze its implications for the formation of an Islamic generation. Employing a qualitative approach with a literature review method, the research examines various relevant sources. The findings identify three main dimensions of an ideal educational environment: the family, school, and community. These three dimensions are interdependent and work synergistically to shape a generation rooted in faith, knowledge, and noble character. The family serves as the initial foundation for instilling values of faith and morality. The school extends this foundation through structured, formal education, and the community provides a real-life context for practicing these values. This study highlights the lack of integration between family, school, and community roles in current Islamic educational models. It concludes that strengthening the synergy among these three pillars can contribute significantly to building a holistic Islamic education system that is adaptive to contemporary challenges and capable of fostering character education based on Islamic values.

Abstract

This article investigates the concept of genetic inheritance and parental education in the Qur’an by focusing on the story of Prophet Ibrahim, his two wives (Hajar and Sarah), and their sons, Ismail and Ishaq. Using a semantic approach, it analyzes the terms ghulam, halim, and alim as found in Surah As-Saffat (101) and Adh-Dhariyat (28), applying two linguistic theories—derivation (isytiqaq) and correlation (munasabah) in combination with a scientific framework. The aim is to explore how these Qur’anic expressions contribute to understanding the interplay between inherited traits and educational influence in shaping character. Modern genetics emphasizes the biological transmission of traits, while developmental psychology highlights the importance of environment and parenting. The Qur’an appears to acknowledge both, suggesting that children's characteristics are shaped not only through lineage but also through nurturing. This is illustrated in the distinct personalities of the sons of Hajar and Sarah, which are examined through linguistic and contextual analysis. Findings reveal that ghulam refers to a child nearing adulthood, alim denotes deep and inherent knowledge, and halim describes patience and emotional restraint. These attributes reflect both inherited and cultivated virtues present in the characters of Ibrahim's sons. While the article does not establish a definitive "ideal parenting model", it identifies key elements, such as inherited moral dispositions and consistent educational guidance. That contributes to effective parental influence. Ultimately, this research affirms the value of Qur'anic semantics as a lens for understanding the integration of nature and nurture in the moral development of children.

Abstract

While contextual approaches frequently lack this epistemic anchor, which raises questions about legitimacy, classical Islamic scholarship emphasizes sanad (chain of transmission) as the primary criterion for authenticating Qur'anic interpretations based on Prophetic traditions. By combining sanad-based validation with maqasid al-shari‘ah (higher objectives of Islamic law), this study offers a compromise that results in interpretations that are both legitimate and pertinent. The framework involves two steps: first, isnad-based validation using isnad and matn criticism to verify textual authenticity (riwayah sahihah); second, maqasid-driven interpretation using the values of public welfare, justice, and mercy to bring meaning into line with modern contexts. By ensuring authenticity comes before contextualization, this "double validation" lessens subjective bias while maintaining epistemic authority. The innovation resides in overcoming the riwayah–dirayah divide using a methodical approach that blends purposive interpretation with authenticity protections. In terms of methodology, the study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach that includes textual analysis of both modern tafsir literature influenced by the maqasidi paradigm and classical hadith sources. It uses hermeneutical interpretation to link textual meaning to socio-historical realities, content analysis to identify themes, and isnad–matn criticism to evaluate reliability. The end effect is a methodology that is both responsive to contemporary issues and steadfast in its adherence to Islamic epistemology, maintaining the normative function of sanad while permitting context-sensitive Qur'anic interpretations.

Abstract

The 2022 Indonesian National Youth Mental Health Survey informed that adolescents were diagnosed around 1 in 20 or 5.5 percent of with condition of mental disorders. Basically, social support can encourage adolescents to have good mental health, so they can achieve their dreams. Especially for adolescents in memorizing the Qur'an. This study was to analyze the effect of social support on the achievement of memorizing the Qur'an and mental health as an intervening variable. The research method used quantitative with a survey approach. Based on the data obtained, there is a relationship between social support and the achievement of memorizing the Qur'an through mental health. The results of the study showed that social support was significantly related to mental health. It is known that out of 94 people, there are 60 people (63.8%) in the moderate category, which proves that the relationship between social support and mental health and is strengthened by the Sommers'd test which shows that the correlation is quite strong with a p value of 0.007 <0.05 which means that there is a relationship between social support and mental health on the achievement of memorizing the Qur'an. The novelty of this study lies in its concept, namely that social support can affect the achievement of memorizing the Qur'an through mental health because good social support will produce a healthy mentality, and a healthy mentality will make the memorizer of the Qur'an enjoy the process of memorizing it.

Abstract

Khamr, as an intoxicating substance, is explicitly prohibited in Islamic law due to its harmful effects on both individual and societal well-being. In Indonesia, the increasing number of khamr abuse cases has led to various social and health-related problems. Abid al-Jabiri, a contemporary Muslim intellectual, reexamines the prohibition of khamr through his nuzuli tafsir, offering a contextual and chronological understanding of the relevant Qur’anic verses. This study analyzes al-Jabiri’s nuzuli interpretation by applying a chronological approach to the verses on khamr prohibition (Q.S. al-Baqarah 2:219, al-Nisa’ 4:43, and al-Ma’idah 5:90–91), linking their stages of revelation with the sirah nabawiyyah. Using a library-based, descriptive-analytical method and the ijmali approach, the research traces the sequential development of the prohibition to uncover al-Jabiri’s juristic framework that integrates historical context with normative guidance. Through the lens of pragmatic truth theory, the study highlights the novelty of al-Jabiri’s nuzuli method, which contrasts with traditional, static interpretations by situating the verses within an evolving socio-political context. This reinterpretation offers a rational, adaptable, and socially responsive model for applying Islamic legal principles to contemporary issues, particularly concerning the regulation and understanding of intoxicants in modern Muslim societies.
