Abstract

This article examines the transformation of tafsir from traditional to modern in the perspective of Fazlur Rahman's hermeneutics. This research was conducted using qualitative methodology with hermeneutic analysis to understand the mufassir's efforts in answering the challenges of the times in a more contextual and relevant way. The traditional textual approach is now replaced by a more unified hermeneutic method, combining social, historical and linguistic analysis. This allows Qur'anic interpretation to deepen meanings that are not only appropriate to the context of the past, but also relevant to modern social, political and cultural realities. The development of globalization and modernity has had a significant impact on the dynamics of tafsir, with modern mufassirs applying adaptive methods to address social issues. However, this transformation faces the challenge of maintaining a balance between innovation and respect for tradition and the authority of the sacred text. The interim conclusion of the study shows that changes in tafsir not only enrich the intellectual horizons of Islam, but also play an important role in developing an understanding and practice of the Qur'an that is more relevant to the context of modern society.

Abstract

Social inequalities, such as poverty, limited education access, and wealth disparity, often stem from unjust wealth management. Islam, through the Qur'an, offers comprehensive guidelines on acquiring, consuming, purifying, distributing, and protecting wealth to benefit society. While Islamic finance has been widely studied, research linking wealth management to social implications remains limited. This study analyzes wealth management concepts in the Qur'an based on Tafsir Al-Azhar by Hamka and examines their impact on social welfare. Using a qualitative, literature-based approach with thematic tafsir, the study explores relevant Qur'anic verses in a modern socio-economic context. Findings reveal five key aspects of wealth management: halal acquisition emphasizing justice and spiritual balance, moderate consumption avoiding excess and miserliness, purification through zakat to reduce inequality, distribution via charity and waqf to foster social solidarity, and wealth protection through financial planning and inheritance for future security. The study confirms that applying Islamic wealth management principles can help reduce social inequality, improve welfare, and promote economic justice. It contributes to Islamic economic theory while offering practice al guidance fo individuals and policymakers to manage wealth fairly and sustainably.

Abstract

This study examines the unique features of Rasm Utsmani and Rasm Imla’i, highlighting the ways these writing systems support the concept of i‘jaz Al-Qur’an, particularly in terms of their influence on meaning, word structure, and the aesthetic qualities of the Qur’anic language. Using a qualitative-descriptive method, the study conducts textual analysis on selected Qur’anic verses that exhibit orthographic differences between the two scripts. The data were collected through literature review, encompassing canonical mushaf, classical Qur’anic sciences, and contemporary scholarly discussions. The analysis reveals that Rasm Utsmani functions beyond a mere orthographic convention it carries symbolic layers that convey profound meanings and support the Qur’an’s miraculous nature. While Rasm Imla’i prioritizes phonetic clarity for ease of reading and writing, it tends to lack the visual depth and exegetical richness present in Rasm Utsmani. The study suggests that integrating both systems in Qur’anic pedagogy balancing readability with a deeper appreciation of divine linguistic structure can enhance comprehension and spiritual engagement with the text.

Abstract

The educational environment in Islam plays a strategic role in shaping students' character. This study aims to explore the concept of the academic environment from the perspective of the Qur'an and Hadith and analyze its implications for the formation of an Islamic generation. Employing a qualitative approach with a literature review method, the research examines various relevant sources. The findings identify three main dimensions of an ideal educational environment: the family, school, and community. These three dimensions are interdependent and work synergistically to shape a generation rooted in faith, knowledge, and noble character. The family serves as the initial foundation for instilling values of faith and morality. The school extends this foundation through structured, formal education, and the community provides a real-life context for practicing these values. This study highlights the lack of integration between family, school, and community roles in current Islamic educational models. It concludes that strengthening the synergy among these three pillars can contribute significantly to building a holistic Islamic education system that is adaptive to contemporary challenges and capable of fostering character education based on Islamic values.

Abstract

This article investigates the concept of genetic inheritance and parental education in the Qur’an by focusing on the story of Prophet Ibrahim, his two wives (Hajar and Sarah), and their sons, Ismail and Ishaq. Using a semantic approach, it analyzes the terms ghulam, halim, and alim as found in Surah As-Saffat (101) and Adh-Dhariyat (28), applying two linguistic theories—derivation (isytiqaq) and correlation (munasabah) in combination with a scientific framework. The aim is to explore how these Qur’anic expressions contribute to understanding the interplay between inherited traits and educational influence in shaping character. Modern genetics emphasizes the biological transmission of traits, while developmental psychology highlights the importance of environment and parenting. The Qur’an appears to acknowledge both, suggesting that children's characteristics are shaped not only through lineage but also through nurturing. This is illustrated in the distinct personalities of the sons of Hajar and Sarah, which are examined through linguistic and contextual analysis. Findings reveal that ghulam refers to a child nearing adulthood, alim denotes deep and inherent knowledge, and halim describes patience and emotional restraint. These attributes reflect both inherited and cultivated virtues present in the characters of Ibrahim's sons. While the article does not establish a definitive "ideal parenting model", it identifies key elements, such as inherited moral dispositions and consistent educational guidance. That contributes to effective parental influence. Ultimately, this research affirms the value of Qur'anic semantics as a lens for understanding the integration of nature and nurture in the moral development of children.

Abstract

While contextual approaches frequently lack this epistemic anchor, which raises questions about legitimacy, classical Islamic scholarship emphasizes sanad (chain of transmission) as the primary criterion for authenticating Qur'anic interpretations based on Prophetic traditions. By combining sanad-based validation with maqasid al-shari‘ah (higher objectives of Islamic law), this study offers a compromise that results in interpretations that are both legitimate and pertinent. The framework involves two steps: first, isnad-based validation using isnad and matn criticism to verify textual authenticity (riwayah sahihah); second, maqasid-driven interpretation using the values of public welfare, justice, and mercy to bring meaning into line with modern contexts. By ensuring authenticity comes before contextualization, this "double validation" lessens subjective bias while maintaining epistemic authority. The innovation resides in overcoming the riwayah–dirayah divide using a methodical approach that blends purposive interpretation with authenticity protections. In terms of methodology, the study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach that includes textual analysis of both modern tafsir literature influenced by the maqasidi paradigm and classical hadith sources. It uses hermeneutical interpretation to link textual meaning to socio-historical realities, content analysis to identify themes, and isnad–matn criticism to evaluate reliability. The end effect is a methodology that is both responsive to contemporary issues and steadfast in its adherence to Islamic epistemology, maintaining the normative function of sanad while permitting context-sensitive Qur'anic interpretations.

Abstract

The 2022 Indonesian National Youth Mental Health Survey informed that adolescents were diagnosed around 1 in 20 or 5.5 percent of with condition of mental disorders. Basically, social support can encourage adolescents to have good mental health, so they can achieve their dreams. Especially for adolescents in memorizing the Qur'an. This study was to analyze the effect of social support on the achievement of memorizing the Qur'an and mental health as an intervening variable. The research method used quantitative with a survey approach. Based on the data obtained, there is a relationship between social support and the achievement of memorizing the Qur'an through mental health. The results of the study showed that social support was significantly related to mental health. It is known that out of 94 people, there are 60 people (63.8%) in the moderate category, which proves that the relationship between social support and mental health and is strengthened by the Sommers'd test which shows that the correlation is quite strong with a p value of 0.007 <0.05 which means that there is a relationship between social support and mental health on the achievement of memorizing the Qur'an. The novelty of this study lies in its concept, namely that social support can affect the achievement of memorizing the Qur'an through mental health because good social support will produce a healthy mentality, and a healthy mentality will make the memorizer of the Qur'an enjoy the process of memorizing it.

Abstract

Khamr, as an intoxicating substance, is explicitly prohibited in Islamic law due to its harmful effects on both individual and societal well-being. In Indonesia, the increasing number of khamr abuse cases has led to various social and health-related problems. Abid al-Jabiri, a contemporary Muslim intellectual, reexamines the prohibition of khamr through his nuzuli tafsir, offering a contextual and chronological understanding of the relevant Qur’anic verses. This study analyzes al-Jabiri’s nuzuli interpretation by applying a chronological approach to the verses on khamr prohibition (Q.S. al-Baqarah 2:219, al-Nisa’ 4:43, and al-Ma’idah 5:90–91), linking their stages of revelation with the sirah nabawiyyah. Using a library-based, descriptive-analytical method and the ijmali approach, the research traces the sequential development of the prohibition to uncover al-Jabiri’s juristic framework that integrates historical context with normative guidance. Through the lens of pragmatic truth theory, the study highlights the novelty of al-Jabiri’s nuzuli method, which contrasts with traditional, static interpretations by situating the verses within an evolving socio-political context. This reinterpretation offers a rational, adaptable, and socially responsive model for applying Islamic legal principles to contemporary issues, particularly concerning the regulation and understanding of intoxicants in modern Muslim societies.

Abstract

Uncontrolled emotions often trigger a variety of psychological and social problems, such as impulsive behavior, conflict, anxiety, and spiritual imbalances. However, the majority of research to date has used a descriptive-normative approach and has not yet developed a model of emotional regulation based on the Qur'an. This research aims to fill that gap by analyzing the Qur’an’s verses that reflect basic human emotions, especially in terms of self-control strategies. A qualitative approach based on literature review and thematic interpretation (mawdu'i) is used, namely by grouping verses scattered in various surahs into the theme of emotion and self-control. The data was analyzed through theory-based coding techniques based on the development of a conceptual framework of self-control according to the Qur'an. The results of the study state that the Qur'an not only acknowledges the existence of human emotions and desires, but also provides moral and spiritual guidance in managing them constructively. These values enrich the thematic discourse of Islamic interpretation and psychology, particularly in building the foundation of spiritual regulation to respond to modern psychiatric and social challenges. The research offers novelty by bridging thematic tafsir and grounded theoretical approaches to construct an emotion regulation model directly from revelation.  Additionally, this study produces an e-book intented for academics, educators, and practitioners of Islamic counseling. It further recommends multidisciplinary research to integrate the Qur’anic concept of self-control into educational curricula, therapeutic models, and faith-based counseling frameworks.

Abstract

This study investigates how ideological meaning is constructed in Ayat Kursi through Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach, using Tafsir al-Munir and At-Ta’wil al-Najmiyyah as primary references, and how its transformation of meaning is manifested in Muslim religious practices. Ayat Kursi, widely recited and regarded as a means of protection, is often understood normatively, without further exploration of the sign systems embedded in its textual formulations. This research highlights that each expression in the verse holds broader and more complex meanings that go beyond literal interpretation. The findings show that, at the denotative level, Ayat Kursi describes Allah’s majesty and absolute power. At the connotative level, it conveys symbols of divine protection, spiritual strength, and Islamic identity. At the mythical level, the verse represents transcendent authority that governs human existence, portraying faith as a protective force through Allah’s unlimited power to repel danger, ward off evil, and bring peace. Furthermore, the study identifies three patterns in the transformation of Ayat Kursi’s meaning within religious practice: (1) a shift from spiritual-transcendental protection to its use as a magical-sympathetic object; (2) its role as a marker of identity and sacred space; and (3) a reduction of its rich, complex meanings into simplified, practical functions. By combining semiotic analysis with exegetical perspectives, this research contributes to deepening the study of Qur’anic interpretation and demonstrates the continued relevance of Ayat Kursi for contemporary Islamic discourse.
