Abstract

This study aims to describe how generalization process to 192 children in middle school at grade 7 in solving problems of patterns. Processing of the data in this study uses qualitative data analysis techniques. The analyzed data is the data obtained through direct observation technique, documentation, and interviews. This study based on research studies Rivera (2011) which resulted in a five – representations in pattern generalization, namely: verbal, visual, numeric, verbal alphanumeric, and visuoalpanumeric. Visuoalphanumeric representation can be interpreted that the ability of students in determining the general formula of n th pattern symbolically (algebraically) by manipulating the image (visually). Based on the analysis of the data in this study found there are a unique phenomenon that appeared namely visuoalphanumeric representation in pattern generalization process that is the childrens able to related rule of pattern on conjecturing process to another context of patterns problem through two ways, which are visually and symbolically.

Abstract

The phenomenon of street children is a problem that will not cease to be debated in both academic and practical studies. This case should be seriously treated since the street children role as the future generation and if it is not immediately overcome, it will threaten the nation's future. Indonesian nation with age range between 10 and 20 years of the younger generation today is they who will drive a great ship of this nation. The establishment of halfway houses is an alternative way to overcome problems of street children. Halfway house is a place of convergence which is informal, where the children meet each other, gain information and guidance early before getting the further coaching process. However in its implementation, halfway house still faces some problems related to its establishment goals and its functions to optimize the empowerment of street children. Starting from this phenomenon, especially in Jember, the researcher is attracted to conduct a research study on how is the contribution of halfway house “Lentera Ilmu” in the empowerment of street children in Jember. This study uses a qualitative research approach of case studies. The research results showed that the halfway house “Lentera Ilmu” contributes to the handling of street children in Jember, like as the meeting place (meeting point) between social workers and street children, as a center for the diagnosis and referral namely a place to make diagnosis of the needs and problems of street children and referral social services for street children, as the facilitator and the mediator between the street children and their families, substitute families, and other institutions. The halfway house “Lentera Ilmu” also roles as a heaven of science protection that protects the children from various forms of violence and sexual perversion or other behaviors. The activities of development program for the street children in the halfway house “Lentera Ilmu” include coaching and mentoring, entrepreneurship service program for street children in the form of skills development (such as screen printing, sewing, and electro) in accordance with their conditions and interests, providing capital assistance and guidance of business for the street children in both individuals and groups and also finding suitable jobs or internships for street children.

Abstract

Mathematical thinking and problem-solving are the important goals of learning mathematics. But in fact, mathematics learning school was focused to compute the final answer. For example in solving algebraic equations, students have difficulty to solvingthese problems because students do not understand about symbols of equivalencies. It shows that student needs a media that stimulates their relational thinking. Therefore, this research aims to develop mathematics module for secondary students based on relational thinking to increase ability in solving an algebraic equation. This is a development research which refersto 3D model. The technique for data collection was taken from questionnaire and test. The results showed that the modul included: validity of the contents 84.21%, validity for language 84.21% and validity of display 86.84%. The results of limite test to thirty students received a positive response 94.73% and score of relational included in good catego

Abstract

Student worksheet science based on process image is a printed material that presents a series of images of objects (objects, events, or phenomena), the images in the series between each other always appear to be relatively different in terms (state, position, shape, Combinations) which as a whole illustrate a coherent stage of events in a unified whole. A student worksheet is able to facilitate students in reviewing the material independently, so that materialised learning the science of student centred learning. The purpose of this study is to examine the use of student worksheet based on the image of light concept process for practical and effective junior high school student learning. This research design uses one group pretest-posttest design. The result of the research shows that learning activity is increasing up to reach 83,18%, and respondent gives a positive response with 'good' criterion. N-gain increased understanding of the concept of light by 0.628 on moderate criteria and supported with retention of 99.6%. The use of student worksheets based on the image of light concept process is practical and effective for improving students' understanding, as well as knowledge can be stored for longer in student memory.

Abstract

Problem based learning supports students to have an ability to solve problems in real life, so that students’ critical thinking skill is structurally able to appear and is examined well. By problem based learning, students are able construct their own knowledges. This research is held in elementary school using true experimental with test post-test control group design. It uses quantitative descriptive approach. The data of critical thinking skill indicates that problem based learning does not affect significantly toward students’ critical thinking. The data of learning outcomes is analyzed by using t-test in 5 % signification level. The calculation result using t-test gains tcount = 2, 533. This value is consulted to ttable with db = 54 in 5 % signification level, so that it gains ttable = 2,005. It gains tcount>ttable (2,533 > 2,005). Based on its result, it can be concluded that problem based learning affects students’ learning result, unlike students’ critical thinking skill.

Abstract

Growth medium of bacteria commonly used synthetic medium such as nutrient agar (NA). This synthetic medium was still imported and the price very expensive, therefore, to search an alternative medium needs to be done in order to reduce dependence on imported medium. Alternative medium can be obtained from natural resource that contain nutrient similar as medium in general, such old coconut waste water (Cocos nucifera L). Old coconut water contains glucose, sucrose, protein, minerals, and vitamins. This potential can be used as an alternative growth medium for microorganisms who ferment sugars like Escherichia coli. This study aims to determine the effect of various concentrations of old coconut wastewater (Cocos nucifera L) as an alternative Escherichia coli growth medium. The sample used is old coconut (Cocos nucifera L) wastewater that obtained from Merjosari Market, Malang by setting concentration of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. The result shows old coconut  wastewater medium(Cocos nucifera L) with concentration of 100% has a highest growing number colony of  Escherchia coli, that are 334 x 105. This ability is not much different from used nutrient agar as a omparative medium with total colonies growth are 344 x 105. The concentration of 0% there is no bacterial growth at all. Conclusion from this study is there are growth effects from used various concentrations old coconut wastewater (Cocos nucifera L) as an alternative growth medium of  Escherchia coli and old coconut waterwaste with 100% concentration is the most effective to grow the Eschericia coli.
