Abstract

Excessive gadget use among adolescents is shaped by individual habits, peer norms, family supervision, and community context. This study evaluated a brief community-based intervention designed to strengthen self-regulation among adolescents at risk of excessive gadget use in Margasari Urban Village, Surabaya, Indonesia. A mixed-methods, single-group pre-post design was used. Forty-six adolescents aged 13-18 years completed a 21-item screening questionnaire adapted from the Smartphone Addiction Scale, and 15 moderate- or high-risk adolescents (N = 15) participated in further assessment and intervention. The needs assessment combined interviews with three high-risk adolescents, one parent, and one neighbourhood representative, plus a focus group discussion. The intervention consisted of three 120-minute group psychoeducation sessions integrating self-monitoring, mindfulness-based pausing, self-rules, environmental structuring, and peer support, while parents and community representatives received educational materials. Knowledge scores increased from 46.23 to 83.11. Excessive gadget-use risk scores decreased from 71.20 to 65.80, a statistically significant reduction (z = -2.97, p = .003, r ≈ .77). Average daily gadget use decreased from 5 hours 18 minutes to 5 hours 3 minutes, and parent-rated positive home behaviours increased from 16.07 to 18.13 (z = -3.41, p < .001, r ≈ .88). Qualitative findings indicated improved self-awareness and greater use of concrete control strategies, although peer pressure, night-time habits, and inconsistent community regulation remained barriers. Brief self-regulation-focused psychoeducation with family monitoring and community support may initiate meaningful short-term change, although the absence of a control group and follow-up limits long-term conclusions.

Abstract

This study presents the design and performance evaluation of a low-cost automated egg sorting system utilizing a TCS34725 color sensor and Arduino Uno microcontroller for small-scale poultry operations. The system classifies chicken and duck eggs based on real-time RGB value measurements integrated with servo motor actuators and conveyor mechanisms for automated separation. Experimental testing was conducted on 12 samples comprising 6 chicken eggs and 6 duck eggs under variable ambient lighting conditions. The TCS34725 sensor successfully differentiated eggshell colors based on RGB value variations, with chicken eggs exhibiting higher values due to lighter coloration compared to darker duck eggs. System performance achieved classification accuracy ranging from 90% to 95%, with a mean sorting time of 4 to 8 seconds per egg and an operational cost of approximately Rp2–3 per egg. Primary classification errors were attributed to misaligned egg positioning and ambient lighting variations. Despite these limitations, the system demonstrated reliable automated operation suitable for resource-constrained agricultural contexts. The findings validate the feasibility of employing low-cost RGB sensors as viable alternatives to expensive industrial vision systems for species-based egg classification. This research contributes practical insights for implementing affordable automation technologies in small to medium-scale poultry farms, supporting the broader adoption of smart farming practices in developing agricultural economies.

Abstract

Community-Based Tourism (CBT) positions the community as the primary actor in tourism development, making participatory communication a key factor in achieving sustainable destination management. This study aims to analyze and compare participatory communication in two CBT destinations with distinct characteristics: Kampung Batik Laweyan in Surakarta, a cultural heritage-based tourism village, and Ketenger Tourism Village in Banyumas, a nature-based tourism village. The study employs a qualitative approach using a comparative case study design. Data were collected through focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, non-participatory observation, and document analysis involving 18 informants selected through purposive sampling and were subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis. The results indicate that both destinations implement participatory communication as the foundation for community-based tourism management, though through different approaches. Laweyan has developed an institutionalized communication model through a multi-stakeholder coordination and collaboration forum, whereas Ketenger implements a community-based communication model that relies on social capital, mutual cooperation, and deliberation. These findings indicate that participatory communication in CBT is contextual in nature; therefore, communication strategies must be tailored to the social, cultural, and institutional conditions of each destination. This study contributes to enriching the study of participatory communication in Community-Based Tourism through a comparative perspective.
