Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of combining animation videos and flashcards in enhancing students' vocabulary at YP PGRI 4 Makassar. A quasi-experimental method was employed with a five-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of 46 students selected through a total sampling technique. The data analysis revealed a significant difference in students' English vocabulary, as evidenced by t-test values exceeding the critical t-table values for both Class VIIIa (14.099 > 2.160) and Class VIIIb (7.20 > 2.093). These findings indicate that teaching English vocabulary through the combination of animation videos and flashcards effectively improves vocabulary mastery at SMP YP PGRI 4 Makassar. The results of the pre-test and post-test analyses further corroborate this conclusion. The pre-test means scores for both the Experimental and Control classes showed no significant difference (Experiment: 61.85, Control: 60.60, p > .05). However, after the treatment, the post-test means scores revealed a substantial improvement in the Experimental class (84.41) compared to the Control class (78.07), with p-values of .001 for both groups. Therefore, the integration of animation videos and flashcards is a promising method for enhancing students' English vocabulary proficiency.

Abstract

This study aims to determine EFL students’ and teachers’ perceptions on written corrective feedback (WCF) during blended learning. Interviews, and focus group discussions (FGD) were the instruments used in this study. The researchers used a descriptive qualitative methodology for the research design of this study. Two English teachers and eight students in the IX grade for the academic year 2022–2023 served as the study's subjects. They were selected through a purposive sampling technique. The findings showed that the implementation of WCF was perceived positively and negatively by the EFL students at SMP Negeri 3 Galesong Selatan. The students who had favourable opinions reported that the implementation of WCF was motivating, interesting, and useful. Meanwhile, the students with negative perceptions confirmed that they were demotivated because they had to clarify the WCF provided by the teachers. Further, the EFL teachers also had favourable opinions of WCF as it applied to students in blended learning. They argued that WCF was important, motivating, and helpful for students to recognize their errors. In summary, the researchers concluded that both EFL students and teachers at SMP Negeri 3 Galesong Selatan had favourable perceptions of WCF implementation during blended learning.

Abstract

This research aims at 1) finding out how students perceive teacher character in face-to-face EFL class interactions. 2) finding out the impact of teacher character on students in face-to-face EFL classroom interactions. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods to know students' opinions about the teacher's character and the impact felt by students. The participants in this research were class XII MIPA at SMA Negeri 17 Makassar. In this study, the instrument was an interview. Interviews were conducted face to face. The samples were chosen using the snowball sampling technique. The first student was selected by one of the English teachers at the school and the next student will be selected directly by the first student. The findings showed that 1) three themes can categorize English teachers' characters: interaction characters, personal characters, and teaching characters. The findings also revealed that students prefer an English teacher who can be a motivator during interaction, that the teaching style can build students' sense of enthusiasm and ambitiousness, and that students can emulate. 2) students feel the impact of the English teacher's character, which has both positive and negative sides. From the research results, it can be concluded that the character of an English teacher varies depending on the personality of the teacher. Apart from that, the teacher's character can also have an influence on students where they can also asses and build students' enthusiasm for learning.

Abstract

This study examines the correlation between students' self-confidence and English-speaking ability. It will be accomplished using two distinct instruments: a questionnaire assessing students' dread of writing and a speaking examination centered on memorable moments. This study aims to determine the relationship between students' self-confidence and their speaking skills. This investigation utilized a correlational quantitative research approach—this study's sample comprised one hundred Class XI students from SMA Negeri 1 Pinrang. Cluster random sampling was also used during the sampling procedure. This method permits selecting a sample representative of the population, ensuring that the representation is accurate. The research demonstrates a significant correlation between self-confidence and speaking abilities, indicating a positive relationship between these variables. However, as students' self-confidence increases, their speaking proficiency improves proportionally.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the effectiveness of applying Kahoot app in improving reading comprehension of students in MTsN 1 Makassar which focused on Narrative text material. This type of research is pre-experimental research using one-group pretest and posttest design. The sample of this study was 26 students of class VIII at MTsN 1 Makassar. The instrument of data collection for this research was a reading test consisting of pretest and posttest in the form of multiple choice and true/false. The data analysis method used is descriptive analysis and inferential analysis using the Independent Sample t-Test which are processed using SPSS 29.0. The research findings indicated that the second-grade students of MTsN 1 Makassar were pretty low in reading skill. The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy of using the Kahoot app to improve reading comprehension of students in MTsN 1 Makassar who had been studying Narrative text material. This is a pre-experimental study that employs a one-group pretest and posttest design. The study's sample consisted of 26 eighth-grade students from MTsN 1 Makassar. For this study, a reading test with multiple choice and true/false questions was used to obtain data. The descriptive and inferential data analysis methods employed are descriptive analysis and inferential analysis utilizing the Independent Sample t-Test, both of which are performed using SPSS 29.0. The study showed that the reading proficiency of the MTsN 1 Makassar second grade kids was quite low, but their reading comprehension improved quite significant after the treatment. It was demonstrated by the results of the pre-test mean score of 65.35, which was classified as moderate, and the post-test mean score of 88.65, which was classified as excellent, with an average N-Gain value of 0.71, indicating an improvement. Given that the t-test value was less than 0.05 (0.001<0.005), the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. As a result, it appears that the use of the Kahoot app is helpful in improving students' reading comprehension at MTsN 1 Makassar. It is expected that Kahoot app can be a recommendation for teachers to improve the teaching performance and enhance the student’s reading comprehension.
