Abstract

Community health professionals play a vital role in addressing gaps in mental health care access across African communities. However, limited evidence exists on their roles, the effectiveness of the psychological interventions they deliver, and the extent to which these interventions are culturally adapted. This scoping review aimed to examine the types, cultural adaptations, and sustainability of psychological therapies provided by community health workers to individuals with mental disorders in Africa. A systematic search was conducted in Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed for peer-reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2023. The risk of bias was assessed using QUADAS-2, while the Cultural Adaptation Assessment Tool (CAAT) was used to evaluate the cultural relevance of the interventions. Expert consultation followed Cochrane Handbook guidelines. Out of 13,201 records, ten studies from Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Africa met the inclusion criteria. These studies described eight intervention types, including group-based interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), community trauma therapy, counseling, problem-solving therapy, peer support, task-shared care, and group support psychotherapy. The interventions targeted depression, anxiety, trauma, and suicidal behavior. All interventions were culturally adapted for delivery by community health professionals. Although study designs varied, resulting in differences in evidence quality, findings suggest these culturally relevant interventions are promising in meeting Africa’s mental health needs. Further research is needed to assess their effectiveness among adolescents, older adults, and individuals with severe mental disorders and self-harm behaviors.

Abstract

This study examined the roles of psychological wellbeing, emotional intelligence and perceived self-esteem on prosociality in a sample of undergraduates at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, North-Central Nigeria. Adopting cross sectional survey design, 347 undergraduates from the University were conveniently sampled for this study. The age range of participants from 18 to 28 [M=19.8; SD=3.0] and they responded to standardized measures of Psychological Wellbeing Scale [α = .88], Emotional Intelligence [α = .85], Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale [α = .89] and Prosocial Behaviour Scale [α = .84]. Four hypotheses were formulated and tested. The result indicated that the independent variables; psychological wellbeing [β = .261, p > .05], emotional intelligence [β = .147, p > .05] and self-esteem [β = .255, p > .05] predicted prosocial behaviour. The joint contributions of all predictor variables were also significant [R2= .075, t = 5.096; p < .05]. Based on the findings of this study it was recommended that university management should lay emphasis on learning process to promote psychological wellbeing, emotional intelligence, self-esteem and prosocial behaviour among the students. Training programmes for effective development of the psychological wellbeing, self-esteem and emotional intelligence of the students should be designed to develop their emotional and social skills.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of religious guidance based on the Mauidhoh Hasanah method at the Elderly Social Service House (RPSL) Pucang Gading Semarang and its impact on the elderly's self-efficacy. The Mauidhoh Hasanah method emphasizes wise advice and a personal approach to provide spiritual support tailored to the needs of the elderly. A qualitative approach with a case study method was used in this research. Data collection was conducted through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, which were analyzed thematically to ensure data validity. The results show that the Mauidhoh Hasanah method is effective in fostering elderly self-efficacy. Improvements were seen in the elderly’s confidence in fulfilling religious obligations, emotional regulation, and optimism in facing life challenges. Supporting factors for success include a personal approach, the use of simple language, and materials relevant to daily life. Identified barriers include the elderly’s physical limitations and the limited time available for the guidance sessions. The conclusion of this study indicates that the Mauidhoh Hasanah method has a significant positive impact on the spiritual and psychological well-being of the elderly, making it a relevant religious guidance model to be applied in social care institutions

Abstract

This study aims to explore the practice of dzikir (remembrance of God) based on Al-Adzkar Al-Nabawiyah in enhancing the spiritual intelligence of students (santri) at the An-Nur Student Islamic Boarding School in Surabaya. In the context of modern life, which is often filled with pressure, spiritual intelligence plays a crucial role in helping individuals find deeper meaning and purpose in life. Unfortunately, this aspect is frequently overlooked, even in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), as intellectual development tends to be prioritized. Therefore, this research was conducted to examine how the practice of dzikir can strengthen the spiritual dimension of santri. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal three key points: (1) The implementation of dzikir based on Al-Adzkar Al-Nabawiyah is structured, covering its historical background, procedures, duration, and number of recitations; (2) The practice of dzikir has a positive impact on the santris’ spiritual intelligence, including self-reflection, inner peace, resilience in facing life’s pressures, and a closer connection to God; (3) Supporting factors include a conducive pesantren environment, consistent dzikir schedule, and explanation of meanings, while inhibiting factors involve boredom, drowsiness, and academic busyness that distract from focus during dzikir. These findings affirm that a meaningful and consistent dzikir practice can serve as an effective medium in fostering holistic spiritual intelligence among santri.

The methods used are qualitative case studies with the principal subjects of two inclusion students who have not yet received special services, as well as the support subjects of parents and teachers. Data is collected through interviews, observations, psychological assessment, and documentary studies. Studies indicate a difference in psychological conditions between subjects which are grouped into five aspects of development, those of cognitive, physical, language, emotional and personality development, and social. Based on these results, IEP intervention designs adapted to student conditions: the first subject with intellectual disability disorder (IDD) and nearsightedness is given the finger hold method, playing lego, and multisensory fernald; whereas the second subject with tunadaksa diagnostics is given modeling techniques, tokens economy, and giving responsibility.

Abstract

In Indonesia, many state junior high school students still have difficulty understanding English learning at school, even though they have been exposed to English on a varying scale. One of the psychological barriers that influences foreign language proficiency is foreign language anxiety. Therefore, this research seeks to investigate the level of foreign language anxiety experienced by state junior high school students in Bukit Batu District influenced by the history of English learning and the causal factors. The research methods used in this study are quantitative, using foreign language classroom anxiety scale instrument with 245 samples, and qualitative research using interview with 15 subjects. The research results show that students' level of English language anxiety is relatively high. When related to the history of learning English, students who have taken English courses have lower levels of English language anxiety because of the learning methods and learning facilities in the tutoring institution. Therefore, teachers and schools need to facilitate students by implementing more practical methods, using games as a learning medium, and establishing English afterschool activity so that students are more accustomed, comfortable, and enthusiastic about using English at school.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of madrasah climate and gratitude on the psychological well-being of honorary teachers at Islamic elementary schools (Madrasah Ibtidaiyah) in Kudus Regency. The research is based on the concerning reality of honorary teachers' welfare, who often face low wages and uncertain career paths. These challenges highlight the need for psychological factors that support teachers’ motivation and mental health. The study employed a quantitative correlational approach involving 50 honorary teachers as participants. Data were collected using three Likert-scale instruments: psychological well-being, madrasah climate, and gratitude-each of which demonstrated high reliability with Cronbach’s Alpha values above 0.70. Data was analyzed using multiple linear regression. The findings show that both madrasah climate and gratitude have a significant and positive influence on teachers' psychological well-being. A conducive school environment and an internal attitude of gratitude contribute to a healthier and more productive psychological state among honorary teachers. These findings emphasize the importance of supportive or environments and spiritual values in enhancing teachers’ psychological well-being. It is recommended that madrasah administrators foster a supportive and inclusive school climate, while teachers are encouraged to cultivate gratitude as part of their psychological resilience and professional development.
