Abstract

This study examines the virtue of knowledge (fadl al-‘ilm) in Islam through a comparative analysis of two major Hadith compilations: Jami’ at-Tirmidhi by Imam at-Tirmidhi and Riyadhus Shalihin by Imam an-Nawawi. In Islamic teachings, knowledge occupies a central position in shaping character, building civilization, and serving as a spiritual means of drawing closer to Allah. The first revelation commanding humankind to “read” underscores the fundamental importance of knowledge in Islam. Both Hadith collections selected for this research present narrations on the excellence of knowledge with distinct approaches and structures, making them particularly interesting to explore thematically. This study employs a qualitative methodology using a library research approach and thematic (maudhu’i) analysis. The research procedures include identifying Hadiths related to knowledge, classifying them into subthemes, conducting a comparative analysis of their wording, meaning, and context, and drawing conclusions on the similarities and differences in their presentation. The findings are expected to enrich the understanding of the methodological characteristics of both works in addressing the theme of knowledge, as well as to contribute to the development of thematic Hadith studies and Islamic thought in general.

Abstract

The tradition of writing Fadhāil books is one of the ways in which scholars contribute to grounding the spiritual values of Islam. This study examines two fadhāil books from two different periods: an anonymous manuscript from the early 12th century AH stored in the Daiber Collection, University of Tokyo, and the book Faḍhāil al-A'māl by Sheikh Muhammad Zakariyya al-Kandahlawi from the 14th century AH. This study aims to compare the methods, structure, and scientific content of the two books in order to understand the trends in the compilation of fadhāil books in the development of hadith studies. The approach used is qualitative with bibliographic and philological studies, namely by examining the texts in depth through primary and secondary source searches, as well as conducting philological stages such as manuscript description, transliteration, and text criticism to assess the authenticity and context of the writing. The analysis was conducted descriptively and comparatively to reveal the characteristics and scientific orientation of each book. The results of the study show that these two books reflect the development of hadith science at that time, although they differ in terms of composition, systematic presentation of hadith, and the background of their authors. The anonymous book from the early 12th century AH is more thematic and simple, while Faḍhāil al-A'māl shows the influence of systematic preaching and spiritual guidance within the framework of the Tabligh movement.

Abstract

The analysis concludes that social media plays a dual role in shaping Indonesian public perceptions of LGBT issues. On the one hand, social media serves as a tool for raising awareness and education, providing a platform for positive narratives that can reduce stigma, particularly among the younger generation. However, on the other hand, social media also serves as a channel for the spread of disinformation and negative stigma, which can exacerbate discrimination against the LGBT community. In this context, the interpretation of the hadith related to LGBT becomes highly relevant, providing a normative framework that can be debated in a dynamic digital space. Although the hadith explicitly prohibits homosexual behavior, it is important to convey these messages with a humanistic and educational approach so that the public can understand the context without further stigmatizing them. By utilizing social media wisely, there is an opportunity to create a healthier and more inclusive space for dialogue and educate the public about diversity and human rights. This confirms that it is not only relevant but can also be a necessary source of guidance for addressing contemporary social challenges, fostering a broader and deeper understanding of Islamic teachings in diverse contexts.

Abstract

The volatile global economy necessitates ethical investment frameworks, where Islamic finance offers a unique values-based model. However, a significant gap persists in the literature: the rigorous application of Hadith criticism to authenticate and contextualize the prophetic traditions underpinning Islamic investment ethics. This study addresses this by critically examining key hadith concerning Islamic ethical standards like riba, gharar, and maysir, and principles of justice. This research aims to demonstrate how critically authenticated hadith can be effectively applied in modern Islamic financial products and policies, fostering greater transparency and ethical integrity. Employing a qualitative library research approach with content and historical-critical analysis, we apply hadith criticism methodologies—including jarh wa ta'dil, sanad analysis, matn criticism, and ilal al-hadith—to selected texts from canonical collections. The findings of this study indicate that the majority of the key hadiths analyzed are classified as either sahih or at least hasan, thereby providing a strong and authoritative normative foundation for the formulation of Islamic investment ethical standards and enabling their practical application in the modern Islamic finance industry. The main contribution of this research lies in integrating the tradition of Hadith scholarship with the practice of Islamic economic ethics, a connection that has thus far been underexplored in academic literature. Ultimately, this study proposes a methodologically sound framework of Islamic investment ethics, bridging traditional Hadith studies with contemporary finance to promote a more resilient and ethical global financial system.

Abstract

This study critically analyzes the epistemological foundations of hadith criticism, examining the paradigmatic conflict between the textualist Ahl al-Hadith and the rationalist Ahl al-Ra’yi/Kalam traditions. This topic is vital as it addresses the core tension between tradition and reason in Islamic thought, a debate that remains highly relevant in contemporary contexts, especially regarding hadith’s authenticity and its compatibility with modern knowledge. The research uses a qualitative, library-based comparative analysis to scrutinize the methodologies of both traditions, focusing on their respective primary sources of authority, criticism criteria, and validity standards. The research findings indicate that both paradigms possess complementary strengths and weaknesses: the textual paradigm excels in historical authenticity but lacks rational coherence, while the rational paradigm emphasizes theological consistency and universal Islamic values yet tends toward subjectivity. Both represent distinct but mutually corrective approaches to understanding prophetic truth. This study's key contribution is a proposal for a comprehensive critical epistemology that integrates the historical rigor of sanad criticism with the rational scrutiny of matn. This hybrid framework offers a balanced and accountable approach to hadith criticism, bridging the historical gap and ensuring its continued relevance for modern scholarship and believers.
