Abstract

This study examines the concept of honoring guests in the perspective of hadith through a structured literature review of scientific works published between 2016 and 2025. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, this research identifies, classifies, and analyzes twenty scholarly articles sourced from Google Scholar using the keyword “memuliakan tamu.” The findings show that the theme appears across multiple fields, including Islamic studies, education, social sciences, and cultural studies, with publication trends rising significantly during 2022–2024. Institutional distribution reveals that most studies originate from academic institutions in Java, followed by Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Kalimantan, indicating broad scholarly engagement across Indonesia. Thematically, the literature emphasizes that honoring guests is deeply connected to ethical, moral, and spiritual values rooted in hadith and Qur’anic teachings. Although numerous studies have been conducted, a research gap remains, as previous works often address only specific aspects without providing an integrated synthesis. Therefore, this study contributes a comprehensive understanding of the principles and significance of guest hospitality in Islam and highlights its role as a social ethic that promotes harmony, compassion, and communal solidarity.

Abstract

This article examines the paradigm transformation in Ulūm al-Ḥadīṡ through debates on hadith authenticity in classical and contemporary Islamic scholarship. It aims to formulate an integrative epistemological framework that bridges classical hadith criticism and modern historical-critical approaches. The novelty of this study lies in proposing a conceptual synthesis between naqd al-sanad, naqd al-matn, and socio-historical analysis as complementary approaches in assessing hadith authenticity. This study applies qualitative library research using textual analysis of selected classical hadith manuals and contemporary academic works on hadith criticism. Primary data include classical works of muṣṭalaḥ al-ḥadīṡ and modern scholarly studies, while secondary data consist of interdisciplinary literature on Islamic epistemology and authenticity discourse. Data were analyzed using descriptive, comparative, and historical approaches. The findings indicate that the classical paradigm emphasizes sanad continuity, narrator reliability, and textual consistency, whereas modern approaches focus on socio-historical reconstruction and contextual interpretation. The study identifies a possible convergence in which classical criticism provides methodological rigor, while modern analysis contributes interpretive depth. However, integration must remain epistemologically selective to prevent weakening the normative authority of hadith. Therefore, this study proposes an integrative framework that places classical methodology as the epistemic foundation while adopting critical contextual analysis. This model strengthens the relevance and epistemological resilience of Ulūm al-Ḥadīṡ in contemporary scholarship.

Abstract

  This article aims to analyse and reconstruct the epistemological ideas of Edi Safri, Professor of Hadith Studies at UIN Imam Bonjol Padang, which are formulated as the pentastructural study of hadith. Hadith studies in Indonesia and the Islamic world in general still rely on two major classifications: the science of hadith transmission (riwayah), which governs the transmission and preservation of hadith, and the science of hadith understanding (dirayah), which establishes the principles of sanad and matan criticism. Although both have made fundamental contributions to the Islamic scholarly tradition, this dualistic framework is not sufficient to depict the true breadth, depth, and contemporary relevance of hadith studies. There is a significant gap in the form of a void in the framework that integrates the dimensions of authenticity, historicity, hermeneutics, intellectual biography, and contemporary responses into a cohesive epistemological structure. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach and a biographical-intellectual study based on the author's direct involvement in the learning process with Edi Safri from the undergraduate to doctoral level (2012–present). The findings show that the pentastructural framework fills the epistemological gap left by classical classifications, integrating historical, hermeneutic, intellectual biography, and contemporary response dimensions into a coherent and pedagogically layered scientific architecture. The penta-structural framework of hadith studies includes: (1) al-bahṡ al-asāsī (main study/critique of chain-text), (2) al-bahṡ at-tārīkhī (historical study), (3) al-bahṡ ʻan al-fiqh al-ḥadīṡ (methodological study of hadith understanding), (4) al-bahṡ ʻan al-aʻlām wa al-muṣannafāt (study of figures and literature), and (5) al-bahṡ ʻan al-musykilāt wa al-ḥawādiṡ al-ḥadīṡiyyah (study of contemporary issues). This framework is relevant as an alternative methodology that is more holistic and systematic for the study of modern hadith in Indonesia and globally.
