Abstract

Abstract: Plastic surgery to change the shape of the nose (rhynoplasty) is a controversy that is present today as knowledge increases in the field of medical technology, increasing aesthetic influence which presents new trends in influencing a person's shape and appearance. On the other hand, nose reconstruction (septoplasty) is also needed because of an accident, disease or certain conditions in the nose. This paper analyzes the issue of plastic surgery on the nose as an effort to provide an understanding of biblical ethics to place this phenomenon in accordance with Christian ethical principles. The goal is for God's people to consider biblical and ethical principles in making ethical decisions before undergoing plastic surgery. In this study, researchers used descriptive analysis methods and literature studies. The type of data used is in the form of various books and articles according to the theme of the discussion. Based on existing research, researchers found that nose specialist plastic surgery procedures must be carried out according to the conditions that occur and are supported by clear goals and motivation. Such as plastic surgery of the cetoplasty type which is mandatory for the method of healing the respiratory tract in the nose and plastic surgery of the rhinoplasty type which actually does not have to be done because it is contrary to God's will, and does not agree with the perspective of bioethics and Christian ethics. It is possible to do this surgical procedure, but it must be based on clear reasons and objectives, and supported by the unavailability of other options apart from how necessary this operation must be carried out.Key words: Plastic Surgery, Septoplasty, Rhinoplasty, Christian Ethics

Abstract

The author starts from the clear statement of the Second Vatican Council,“that the Church is a single flock, there are not many Churches. God established a single Church by sending His Son and the Spirit”. Today, the “separated” Churches”, are in real communion, although the communion is not yet complete. Through baptism all Christians, in each of the Christian Chruches, are members of the one Body of Christ. This is a strong bond and has to be taken as more resilient than any differences that may diminish unity. Therefore we must ask: what must be regarded as a difference that is significant enough to grant one the right to deem one’s Church as still separated? This article outlines the eight theses of Heinrich Fries and Karl Rahner where they show, with detalied argumentation, that today the Christian Churches can come together in communion. The article draws to the conclusion that the Christian Church has a moral obligation to live in a communion that is already possible, and has no right to state that the Churches can remain separated from each other. Keywords: Reformation, church unity, separated church ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Penulis artikel ini bertolak dari penegasan Konsili Vatikan II “bahwa Gereja itu merupakan satu kawanan, tidak ada Gereja-gereja Allah dalam bentuk jamak, Allah hanya mendirikan satu Gereja melalui perutusan Putra dan Roh-Nya”. Abstract

This essay looks at human trafficking as the underbelly of an unregulated global economy. Using data collated by the UN and studies undertaken by independent research institutes, the global pattern of trafficking is outlined before focusing on Southeast Asia, a key hub in this modern form of slavery. Key characteristics and motivations are delineated with reference to UN definitions and legislation in Southeast Asia. Attention is given to the global need for cheap labour, sex workers and the widespread trafficking of children. Then, the phenomenon is seen through the eyes of faith drawing on four key biblical attitudes: upholding human dignity (protection), reaching to the heart (prevention), naming the sin (prosecution), and extending Gospel community (partnering). Abstract

The Second Vatican Council has its own resonance which has impacted not only the Roman Catholic Church but other Churches also, indeed the world as a whole. This was the conviction of Pope John XXIII when he announced his idea for a Universal Council. He wished to place the Church within the rapidly changing modern world. One change is in attitudes towards other religions which has opened the path towards dialogue. Now, 50 years later, can the council still speak to us about Church renewal and unity? We note progress in Indonesia such as dialogue between religions and religious convictions, the ecumenical movement which has spread, for instance through the acceptance of a common translation of the Bible. Abstract

Abstract: One crucial problem that has not yet been solved is the eradication of hunger, despite the fact that our world is able to produce sufficient food for each and every inhabitant of the earth. In various parts of the world food is more than abundant, indeed it is so abundant that it is degraded as waste and thrown away. Throwing food away is clearly immoral in a world where hundreds of millions go hungry each day. It is time for such negative behaviour be eliminated. Food is life and everyone has a right to this fundamental need; if we understand that, then food would never be reduced to waste. Keywords: food, foodsharing, critique, consumption, waste. Kata-kata Kunci: Makanan, berbagi makanan, kritik konsumsi, sampah.

Abstract

There is increasing public attention about HIV/AIDS networks of concern. This option for and with HIV/AIDS survivors demonstrates human compassion but also expresses the struggle for life. And precisely here we find a unique, deep and challenging inspiration in the Bible. The story of the healing at the pool of Siloam/Bethzatha (John 5) is a cry for compassionate justice for those who suffer, including those surviving HIV/AIDS. This essay records a reading of John 5 by members of an HIV/AIDS survivor and mutual support group. They relate who Jesus is for them and how, in Jesus, they have regained their self respect and the will to live. Both their experience of pain and rejection by both the local church and their individual families, and their restored humanity accomplished by themselves through the healing touch of Jesus, challenges the rest of us to cast aside our ingrained prejudices and, together with these survivors, experience the liberating touch of Jesus in our lives too. The healing touch of Jesus can destroy any reluctance we might still have, based on the prejudiced values of the surrounding society. This “popular” reading of John 5 shows how Jesus opened up a circle of freedom and salvation and can be read alongside more academic exegetical accounts. Abstract

Abstract: This article affirms the relevance of multicultural education in the endeavour to construct nationalistic ideals that covers four pillars: Pancasila, the Unitary State of Indonesia, the 1945 Constitution, and Unity in Diversity. Even though the conception of nation-state based on Pancasila has become the national consensus since 1945, it must be admitted that lately nationalistic ideals have increasingly been threatened by primordialistic religious practices. The formation of a multicultural society in Indonesia that is based on nationalistic ideals must be conducted systematically, structurally, integrally, and sustainably. In that context the approach of multicultural education is very relevant. Specifically, the concept of multicultural education includes acknowledgement of individual cultural differences of minority groups. The concept of multicultural education contains aspirations as well as efforts to respect the dignity of each person. Keywords: nationalistic ideas, Pancasila, national identity, multicultural education, diversity, multiculturalism, civil society

Abstract

This article tries to elaborate the relationship between post-secularism, democracy and the public role of religion. The facts of religion’s global revival show the failure of secularization thesis about the disappearance of religion from the public sphere. In political philosophy and social sciences, this phenomenon is called post-secularism. In this article, post-secularism is understood as a phenomenon of religion’s revival in the public sphere or the legitimacy for public role of religion. This understanding is especially necessary  to encourage religion in addressing political, social and humanitarian issues. However, this understanding does not ignore the fact that religion often becomes a scandal and terror for democracy. Therefore, in this article, post-secularism also needs another understanding, namely as "awareness of a reciprocal learning process" between religion and secularity, religious and secular citizens, faith and reason, religious doctrine and public reason. The last model of post-secularism is urgently needed in Indonesia.Key words: Post-secularism, secularization, religion, democracy.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic that began in early 2020 has had serious impacts on various aspects of life globally, nationally and locally, including family planning program services in Indonesia. BKKBN, for example, carries out various policies to increase participation in family planning programs to maintain community welfare by anticipating the baby boom during the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on the results of the survey conducted, the interest of men to participate in becoming MOP contraceptive acceptors began to increase. This is certainly a progress where the awareness of men to participate in family planning programs is increasing. The increase in participants occurred because of ‘correct’ knowledge about family planning programs. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, many men and their families did not have adequate knowledge about vasectomy as a method of contraception. Consequently, this caused limited accessibility to contraceptive services and acceptance among men. The main objective of this paper is therefore to provide complete and clear information to men regarding the benefits, impacts and perspectives of applied ethical theology on the use of the vasectomy method of contraception. Methodologically, this study uses a qualitative method by collecting several journals and books related to the formulation of the problem and looking for possible equations to answer this research problem. The expected results are therefore a wider recognition of the important role of health workers, culture, and experienced family planning cadres, as well as a provision of knowledge and direction in socializing the vasectomy method, including understanding the theologically ethical perspectives of vasectomy as a method of contraception.  Key words: Covid-19, Ethical Theological Perspectives, Family Planning Program, Men, Vasectomy.
