Abstract

Idiomatic expressions, commonly referred to as idioms, are sentences with figurative meaning—a meaning that differs from the literal meaning of the idiom's constituent parts and does not always mean what the words state. This study aims to examine the idiom translation techniques used in the English to Indonesian subtitles of Bee Movie. The movie comes from Apple TV because the quality control process is applied to the subtitles before they are broadcast. Using Baker's theory of idiom translation techniques, this paper is studied. These tactics include adopting idioms from the source language, translating by paraphrasing, translating by omitting a play on idiom, translating by omitting a whole idiom, and utilizing an idiom with a similar meaning but a different form. The data in this study are identified and analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method. 42 idiom data were discovered based on the movie's data. Of those 42 data, 41 data (93%) contain translation methods for paraphrases, and one datum (7%) contains translation strategies for borrowing. In light of the research's conclusions, it is advised that translators possess a solid grasp of both Indonesian and English idioms in order to employ a variety of idiom translation strategies.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze conversations that violate the principles of maxims in communication and to elucidate the violations of maxims by interpreting the contextual factors associated with these violations. The analysis is conducted using Grice’s theory of flouting maxim and Sperber and Wilson’s relevance theory on conversations in The Ellen Show program. A qualitative approach is used in this study to analyze and identify violations of communication principles that occur during these interviews. Out of twenty-seven cases, there are twenty cases where Grice’s maxims are violated. The maxim of quality has the highest frequency of violations, with eleven cases, or 55.0% of total violations. This is followed by maxims of manner and relevance, each with 14 (20.0%) and 13 (15.0%) cases respectively. The maxim of quantity has two cases of violation, accounting for 10.0% of the total. The dialogues between Ellen DeGeneres and Sofía Vergara show a significant presence of assumptions that are closely related to the specific context of their discussions and produce contextual effects that drive the conversation. The relevance of these assumptions is determined based on their ability to establish connections with the surrounding context and generate contextual effects, such as implications, contradictions, or strengthening. In general, their conversations illustrate the importance of contextual effects in establishing the significance of assumptions and influencing the course of a dialogue. Abstract

This research explores the psychological underpinnings of Napoleon, one of the characters in George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Using a Jungian psychoanalytic approach, the study investigates the interplay between Napoleon's personality of shadow and persona. The research aims to understand how these psychological constructs are portrayed in the novel and the impact of the narrative’s plot development. Through a descriptive qualitative analysis, the novel acts as a source of primary data in the form of dialogues, statements, and descriptions. Meanwhile, secondary data was sourced from books, e-books, articles, and websites. Data was analyzed with the thematic data analysis method presented in the form of narrative text, opinions, and ideas in order to understand the concept of shadow and persona. The research found that Napoleon’s shadow personality emerged as a manifestation of his underlying motives, characterized by hypocrisy, cunning, ruthlessness, insecurities, and manipulation. Conversely, his persona is presented as visionary, responsible, infallible, benevolent, and full of potential. The study reveals the significant impact of Napoleon’s shadow and persona on the other animals on the farm. The two aspects of his personality lead to the division of idealism, loss of freedom, and manipulation of Farm’s history. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the novel’s theme and the psychological dynamics at play in totalitarian regimes.
