Abstract

This reserach about the semiotic analysis in the novel “Night on The Galactic Railroad” written by Miyazawa Kenji in 1927. The writer wrote this thesis in order to find the sign inside the Novel and interpret the signs using Peirce’s theory by using a Triadic Model. The author decided to further ease the process of interpreting the sign by using Peirce’s triadic model. The writer decided to use qualitative method to find the result for this research. The writer used 2 objects for this research, formal and material object. The formal object being the Charles Sanders Peirce’s theory. While the material object being the Novel Night on The Galactic Railroad by Miyazawa Kenji. The novel was written in 1927 and published by Bunpoudou in 1934. The writer used a note taking method in this research as an instrument. The writer used Peirce’s theory to analyze the data. The consideration of choosing Pierce because this theory can cover all level in semiotics process of meaning interpretation. Based on the analysis process, the writer found that there are 24 signs, which is 17 indexes, 5 symbols, and 2 icons. The writer concludes that the most frequent signs found in the novel are indexes.

Abstract

This study investigates denotative and connotative meanings in the lyrics of three songs using Barthes’ notion of semiotics. It is conducted in order to find out the meaning of self-confidence within them by unpacking the messages appeared. This study employs descriptive qualitative research. The result reveals that all three songs contain self-confidence meanings through the denotative and connotative meanings within the song lyrics in each stanza. The lyrics implied that listeners should be able to build their self-confidence in order to face the challenges ahead and support others so that they can live peacefully without having no conflict with others.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types and functions of women language features used by Bella Swan in Twilight movie. The design of the study is descriptive qualitative. The data were taken from the utterances of Bella Swan, then analyzed using Lakoff’s theory. The study results discovered eight types of women language features from Bella Swan's utterances: lexical hedges or fillers, tag question, rising intonation, intensifier, hypercorrect grammar, superpolite form, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress. The most frequent women language features used by Bella Swan was lexical hedges or fillers. The researcher identified 14 functions of women language features used by Bella Swan. The dominant functions of women language features were to indicate uncertainty and lack of confidence, wrap up the idea, denote hesitancy and make the sentence less assertive, and express slight surprise and agreement.

Abstract

The title of this study is aimed to explore the kind of signs that represented including icons, indexes, and symbols found in the film. This research also analyzed the relationship of signs in the ‘IT’ film with representament, object, and interpretant. This research is used descriptive qualitative method. The data for this study were collected from the ‘IT’ film used note taking as its her main research instrument. The writers purposively selected a number of signs including seven icons, fifteen indexes, and five symbols. The results of the analysis revealed that icons, indexes, and symbols could indeed be interpreted using Peirce’s semiotic theory, especially the relationship between their representament, object, and interpretant. The blood on water and missing girls shoes, for example, the icon of the blood and murdered mystery; dark basement is an index of the appearance of blazing eye; and the water culvert are a symbol of the scary and mysterious place. Abstract

The purpose for the study is to obtain the information about how the motivation portrayed the main character in the movie “Warm Bodies”. Motivation is generally interpreted someone’s desire to achieve success in any case. In research, the writer uses the movie of “Warm Bodies” as the main material to analysis the data. The theories on literature are necessary to use in analyzing the character in order to answer the research question on chapter 1. The research finding that the main character has change from antagonist into protagonist because of motivation. R as zombie, he help a girl wanted to be human because he wanted to be with someone he loves, so he never gave up to take a chance. The writer analyzed the character of R, through motivation theory, R changes because of motivation.

Abstract

War is a part of human history that is full of grief memories. Literature is a written forum for humanity to remember past events such as war which brought many different reactions and results in life. One of the literary works that portrays the concepts of war, grief, and trauma is “Mieko and the Fifth Treasure” written by Eleanor Coerr. This book was the primary data source of this journal. The purpose of this research was to find the changes due to World War II on the main character “Mieko” and the ways of dealing with her changes, by applying the theory of grief proposed by Kübler-Ross and David Kessler. The main results showed that before the war happened, Mieko was a normal girl who had a wonderful life and loved to make calligraphy art. However, after the war happened, Mieko experienced feelings of fear, confusion, abandonment, insecurity, and many other grief reactions, as a result of her injured hand, her movement to the village, and the bullying she got from some of her classmates. However, Mieko’s friendship with Yoshi slowly turned her negative thoughts into positive ones and made her grow more mature than his past personality. This article wrapped up the essence of healing from visible and invisible wounds that can be done through caring and love for others who are experiencing deep problems in life.

Abstract

Political news is always related to framing which is used to find out the perspective or point of view used by journalists or mass media when selecting issues and writing news. The way journalists or media writes the news and shows their point of view will determine whether or not the media favors certain groups. This study will examine how the Jakarta Globe frames the news regarding the corruption case of the Covid-19 social assistance fund carried out by the former of Social Minister, Juliari Peter Batubara. The data used in this study are three news published by Jakarta Globe on December 6, 2020 which the same day with the former of Social Minister Juliari Peter Batubara surrendered himself to the KPK. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach using framing analysis from Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M Kosicki. Framing analysis from Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki focuses on four structures, namely syntax, script, thematic, and rhetorical. The conclusion is the Jakarta Globe is not neutral in the writing of corruption cases carried out by the former of Social Minister Juliari Peter Batubara in a very subtle way.

Abstract

This research is about the sadness metaphor that found in Bruno Mars’ song. Bruno Mars is one of the famous singer from USA. As a singer also song writer Bruno Mars not only depending on one theme of the songs but variety. From all his songs, the most popular is some sad songs theme. According (Lakoff,G & Johnson,M, 2003 ), conceptual metaphor is an understanding and expressing one kind of thing in terms of another. Based on the theory of (Barcelona, 1986 )Metaphors of sadness were analyzed from a cognitive linguistic perspective. He identified there are 14 sources domains in sadness metaphor.  The writer would like to observes sadness metaphor used the lyrics of the songs. Bruno Mars’ songs were chosen as the data sources because there are many of his songs have lyrics that contains sad feeling. This research used qualitative research approach. As a result, the researcher found there are some fragments of the lyrics in Bruno Mars’ songs which categorized into 5 types of source domains in sadness metaphor, which are: SAD IS DOWN, SAD IS DARK, SADNESS IS A NATURAL FORCE, SADNESS IS A BURDEN and  SADNESS IS INSANITY. The most dominant sources domains of sadness metaphor that is found in Bruno Mars’ song is sadness is a burden.

Abstract

The goal of the study is to prove that prepositions can parse the meanings of possessive construction -s. Besides, it is also to describe kinds of prepositions occurring in the possessive construction -s and to explain the meanings of possessive construction -s. Theories employed to support in analyzing data are Murphy (1998) talking about prepositions; Lyons (1995), Huddleston & Pullum (2002), Carter & McCarthy (2010) discussing about possessive construction -s. The research questions discussed in this study are what kinds of prepositions can the possessive construction -‘s substitute and what meanings can the possessive constructions emerge. Some people considered that the possessive construction -‘s as the meaning of possession of someone. Based on the findings found by the writer, the meaning of possessive construction -s is not only to refer to the possessive meanings, but also to meanings of preposition, i.e. at, in, on, to, of, from, by, and about. Besides, each preposition has different meanings depending on contexts of the sentences.

Abstract

This research entitled Deixis Analysis on Comments of Taylor Swift’s YouTube Channel. The purposes of the research are to find out the types of deixis and interpret the meaning of utterances based on deixis that found on comments in “Back to December” of Taylor Swift’s YouTube channel. The method of this research used descriptive qualitative research. The writer used Levinson’s theory (1983). In this research, the writer analyzed 32 comments on Taylor Swift’s YouTube channel. There are 11 cases of person deixis, place deixis 2 cases, time deixis 1 case, discourse deixis 10 cases, and last but not least, social deixis 8 cases. The writer concludes that the comments are mostly dominated with person deixis which are important in pragmatics study.
