Abstract

Significantly impacted education, necessitating effective integration into teaching practices. This study examined the application of the Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition (SAMR) model to evaluate ICT integration in English Language Teaching (ELT) at the tertiary level. The research aimed to determine whether the SAMR model could enhance pedagogical practices beyond mere technology substitution and how it compared with the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) model. This study addressed the issue of stagnant ICT integration in ELT, hypothesizing that the SAMR model provided a more robust framework for transformative technology use compared to the TPACK model. The study’s purpose was to assess the SAMR model’s effectiveness in advancing ICT integration in university-level ELT. Objectives included comparing SAMR with TPACK and identifying barriers to effective ICT use. A systematic literature review was conducted using six electronic databases covering the past decade (2013-2023). The review followed PRISMA guidelines with defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Preliminary results revealed that while the SAMR model offered the potential for enhancing teaching practices, many educators remained at the substitution stage, mainly replacing traditional methods with technology without significant pedagogical changes. Challenges included insufficient training, institutional resistance, and lack of support. The findings underscored the need for extensive training, supportive policies, and continued research to improve ICT integration in higher education. This study contributes to understanding effective technology integration and provides recommendations for institutions seeking to elevate their teaching practices through meaningful ICT adoption. This research offers insights and practical recommendations for enhancing technology integration in higher education, focusing on overcoming current limitations and advancing teaching methodologies through the SAMR model.

Abstract

The relationship between humans and nature serves as a pivotal theme in literature and film, often mirroring societal concerns about the environment and offering profound insights into the dynamics between humanity and the natural world. Adam McKay’s film Don’t Look Up prominently explores this theme. This study employs Greg Garrard’s ecocritical framework to conduct a qualitative descriptive analysis of the film. The primary objective is to investigate how the film portrays environmental issues such as pollution, wilderness, apocalypse, dwelling, and animal, as outlined in Garrard’s ecocritical theory. By closely examining the film's monologues, dialogues, and scenes, this research seeks to uncover the nuances of these themes and their implications for contemporary environmental discourse.

Abstract

Deixis refers to the need for contextual information to understand certain words and phrases in an utterance. This research aims to analyze the types and functions of deixis in the movie Brave by using a qualitative descriptive approach. Data collection is done by watching the movie, reading the transcript, and categorizing the dialogue based on the type of deixis by using Levinsons method. Through dialog and gesture analysis, this study highlights how deixis is used strategically in the movie Brave to connect the storyline and guide the audience's interpretation. The findings are compared with previous research on deixis in song lyrics, newspapers and other movies, illustrating similarities and unique aspects in the context of Brave. This research emphasizes the role of deixis in enhancing narrative coherence and audience engagement, positioning it as an important tool in film analysis and storytelling. The research categorizes 60 instances of deixis into five types-person, time, place, discourse, and social deixis-with personal deixis identified as the most common among them.

Abstract

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has gained significant global attention, with notable Hollywood celebrities expressing their support or disapproval via social media, particularly on Instagram. Despite Hollywood celebrities' evident influence on Instagram, their role in voicing their opinions concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has not been extensively studied. This qualitative research examines how Hollywood celebrities employ Instagram posts to voice their opinions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. To achieve this aim, we employ the value judgments theory that Macagno propounded to reveal the value judgments in Hollywood celebrities' Instagram posts concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The value judgment theory identifies three strategies: habit, mentioning previous actions, and metaphor and comparison. Our research establishes that the value judgments expressed in Hollywood celebrities' Instagram posts mainly fall under the second strategy, which emphasizes the causal relationship between the historical underpinnings of the conflict and its current state. Nevertheless, the value judgments theory by Macagno is limited in revealing the exact meaning of profile pictures on Instagram. Thus, this study proposes using technoself theory as a guide to explore a new research area concerning the significance of profile pictures.

Abstract

The research aimed to enhance vocabulary instruction at the upper secondary level in Bangladesh by integrating Communicative Language Teaching with vocabulary activities. This study examined the common vocabulary tasks associated with Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) for grades 11-12, current vocabulary learning techniques and tasks, the challenges that impede the effective application of these methods, and the potential strategies for enhancing vocabulary acquisition, focusing on key factors that could improve students' English vocabulary. A mixed-methods approach was used for data collecting and analysis. The research included surveys from 100 students, interviews with 10 instructors, and classroom observations to gather data. The cluster random sampling approach was used to select samples for this research, focusing on a group of current (Higher Secondary Certificate) HSC-level students and instructors. The objective data acquired via questionnaires were statistically evaluated using descriptive statistics expressed as percentages, whereas the interview and classroom observation data were presented in narrative form via comments. The study's results suggested that the alignment of CLT and vocabulary activities significantly influenced the development of students' vocabulary. Research indicated that both vocabulary activities and the principles of CLT are extensively used by students and educators to enhance vocabulary acquisition. The research identified common issues in vocabulary acquisition and proposed many solutions to facilitate comprehensive vocabulary learning.

Abstract

This study explores the concept of deconstruction within the short story Burung Kecil dan Hujan by Yanusa Nugroho, applying poststructuralist theory to uncover how binary oppositions, decentering, and differance are utilized to challenge established meanings and hierarchies. Deconstruction, a method pioneered by Derrida, questions fixed values, revealing the fluidity and instability of meaning within texts. By identifying binary oppositions and analyzing how they are dismantled, this research examines the displacement of traditional centers of power in the narrative. Through the concept of differance, the analysis highlights how meanings in the text remain open to multiple interpretations, destabilizing conventional understandings. This qualitative study aims to deepen the appreciation of poststructuralist methods in literature, demonstrating how Burung Kecil dan Hujan resists fixed interpretations and presents a space for new readings of cultural narratives.
