Abstract

This paper provides an overview and discussion on the current situation of intercultural communication training and challenges for tertiary English in China. A qualitative meta-analysis was conducted on research articles written both in Chinese language and English during the last two decades (from 2002) to explore reported challenges faced by teachers. Mitigating strategies undertaken were also scrutinized via documents analysis of the assorted papers. The findings showed that instructional efforts to develop intercultural communication competence in tertiary students was previously quite stagnant in its approaches, riddled with various micro and macro level challenges and quite unsuccessful in yielding the desired results. Only within the last decade with the advent of ICT and multimedia technology that concerted efforts could be integrated into producing considerable results. This study puts forth relevant improvement strategies derived from various aspects analyzed. They came in the form of inevitable measures like upgrading the teaching system, improving the quality of teachers, changing the teaching strategies, developing resource hub, developing professional teams and groupings, and optimizing intercultural communication evaluation mechanism. The findings from this study has high transferability and  insights for institutions in countries with similar contexts. It also provides beneficial theoretical reference for the training of intercultural communication competence in a foreign language learning context.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to measure the university student; acceptance of the Content based instruction (CBI) approach for The Integrity and Anti-Corruption (IAC) and their understanding on corruption and integrity issues in Malaysia as a whole. This is important as the battle  against corruption must be carried out via all means. Thus the CBI approach enables lecturers to emphasize IAC within their existing languages and humanities courses. Data was elicited via survey questionnaires and selective interviews  on 90 students who enrolled in the various  courses for February semester. The findings show that majority of the respondents were very receptive to the integration of IAC topics via CBI in the languages and humanities courses and they  have good understanding on the main aspects of integrity and  corruption. However some of the students  perception on a few micro practices relating to corruption shows somewhat worrying results. Suggestions are put forth to improve the content integration in the courses so that the learning outcomes will be better achieved as  the understanding of IAC  reach a better level.

Abstract

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has gained significant global attention, with notable Hollywood celebrities expressing their support or disapproval via social media, particularly on Instagram. Despite Hollywood celebrities' evident influence on Instagram, their role in voicing their opinions concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has not been extensively studied. This qualitative research examines how Hollywood celebrities employ Instagram posts to voice their opinions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. To achieve this aim, we employ the value judgments theory that Macagno propounded to reveal the value judgments in Hollywood celebrities' Instagram posts concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The value judgment theory identifies three strategies: habit, mentioning previous actions, and metaphor and comparison. Our research establishes that the value judgments expressed in Hollywood celebrities' Instagram posts mainly fall under the second strategy, which emphasizes the causal relationship between the historical underpinnings of the conflict and its current state. Nevertheless, the value judgments theory by Macagno is limited in revealing the exact meaning of profile pictures on Instagram. Thus, this study proposes using technoself theory as a guide to explore a new research area concerning the significance of profile pictures.

The research aimed to enhance vocabulary instruction at the upper secondary level in Bangladesh by integrating Communicative Language Teaching with vocabulary activities. This study examined the common vocabulary tasks associated with Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) for grades 11-12, current vocabulary learning techniques and tasks, the challenges that impede the effective application of these methods, and the potential strategies for enhancing vocabulary acquisition, focusing on key factors that could improve students' English vocabulary. A mixed-methods approach was used for data collecting and analysis. The research included surveys from 100 students, interviews with 10 instructors, and classroom observations to gather data. The cluster random sampling approach was used to select samples for this research, focusing on a group of current (Higher Secondary Certificate) HSC-level students and instructors. The objective data acquired via questionnaires were statistically evaluated using descriptive statistics expressed as percentages, whereas the interview and classroom observation data were presented in narrative form via comments. The study's results suggested that the alignment of CLT and vocabulary activities significantly influenced the development of students' vocabulary. Research indicated that both vocabulary activities and the principles of CLT are extensively used by students and educators to enhance vocabulary acquisition. The research identified common issues in vocabulary acquisition and proposed many solutions to facilitate comprehensive vocabulary learning.
