Abstract

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) theory emphasizes the mutually integrated and symbiotic relations between language and disciplinary knowledge. Based on this perspective, this study analyses the Double Focus teaching mode implementation that combined business knowledge with English language skills. This is implemented in a Business English course at higher vocational college to enable talent cultivation focus to shift to the internalization of business knowledge while continuing to improve English proficiency. The Double Focus teaching strategy adapted authentic business tasks simulation and practice from actual Foreign Reception Training Course like airport pick-up task via a plan, do, check, action (PDCA) approach. This study found that the integrative element promoted better association between language and business knowledge, raise awareness of using English in situational contexts and foster effective internalization of content knowledge among students. The successful implementation of such integrated CLIL can serve as a reference for the cultivation of language as well as business skills among undergraduates of English at higher vocational colleges

Abstract

This qualitative study investigated the language learning strategies adopted by students whom developed higher order thinking skills (HOTS) via Cooperative Problem- based learning (CPBL) activities in the writing class. The objective of the study is to investigate how language learning strategies in writing lessons adopted by the students develop their higher order thinking skills in the CPBL ESL writing classroom. This study further explored the language learning strategies that students adopted in order to complete writing tasks which require them to exercise their higher order thinking skills. The study was conducted on 13 secondary level form 4 students from an urban school where the collection of data was via structured reflective journal and teacher interviews. The study revealed that the language learning strategies in writing that developed higher order thinking skills within the students were cognitive and compensation strategies while the indirect strategies are cognitive and social strategies. These language learning strategies in writing developed the higher order thinking skills of analysing, evaluating and creating. This study also provided insights on the strategies that English teachers should focus on in the writing classroom via implementation of problem based cooperative learning activities to develop students higher order thinking skills among their students.

Abstract

Learning portfolio records the dynamic learning process of individual learners as a form of formative assessment.  Portfolio evaluation system has attracted great interest from language educators as  it could train learners  and improve their  language proficiency. This paper set out to explore the potential benefits that could be gained in language learning via the implementation of learning portfolio assessment. This paper uses a case study of the teaching and learning of a course in the major of business English in a vocational college to show the significance of portfolio evaluation system in increasing students interest and their learning autonomy. The students showed positive response via survey questionnaires that registered a mean of 3.90 with all items being recorded above 3.50 and via the structured interviews where the students expressed strong receptiveness to the range of benefits that they could gradually gain via such a dynamic teaching, learning and assessing process. Recorded observations by the author also showed positive signs of development in key areas like learners autonomy, self-confidence, critical thinking and self- reflection abilities. This study has positive implications for the teaching and learning in vocational college and will be useful for educators to take up as a dynamic teaching and learning approach.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic led to the closure of higher education institutions and the forced implementation of online learning in an attempt to reduce the spread of Covid-19. The lockdown and movement restrictions have changed students’ daily lives substantially and forced them to adjust to new norms in studying which increased concerns towards their stress levels. This research attempts to identify the perceived learning stress levels among first and second year students during the pandemic. Based on the convenience sampling approach, an online questionnaire adapted from the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and renamed as Perceived Learning Stress Scale (PLSS) was used to collect data from 113first and second year technical engineering students tto analyze their learning stress levels primarily from the impact of the online learning shift. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used to analyze the learning stress scores and its relevance. The findings reveal that the majority of students experienced moderate to high level of learning stress and the presence of significant association between the semester of study and number of credit hours taken with the level of stress they experienced. Despite the study indicating that the students experienced stressful emotions due to learning platform shift, they also developed positive emotions such as confidence and ability to handle and control the learning problems and stress as they have adapted to the prolonged online learning conditions.

This research proposes to explain and describe the sexist language types of the main characters found in Mrs. Dalloway novel based on theory of Sara Mills. The research used a qualitative method by applying a critical discourse analysis. The words, phrases, and sentences from monologues and dialogues reflecting sexism in the novel become the data of the research. Data collection techniques used library techniques, namely documents. The data analysis technique used data reduction, data display, and verification techniques. The results of this research show that Sara Mills sexism theory categorizes sexist language into overt and covert sexism. In Mrs. Dalloway novel, there are four types that are consisted of overt sexism: naming, dictionaries, generic pronouns and nouns, and non-parallel terms. For the covert sexism, there are two types in the novel: presuppositions and metaphor.

Abstract

This study examined the intonation pattern errors occurring in pre-service English teachers talks and investigated the causes of the errors. This research used three instruments to gain the data: documentation, observation and interview. Then, the collected data were analyzed using Roach, Wells Haycraft  theories and PRAAT software analysis. The participants of this study were 8th semester students in English Language Education Study Program at one of the private universities in Yogyakarta. Three recordings of pre-service English teachers talks were transcribed by unitizing schemes, sampling plans, recording/coding, reducing data, abductively inferring contextual phenomena, and narrating the result information of the data collected. The results showed that two kinds of intonation patterns occurred in pre-service English teachers, falling and rising. The dominant error of speaker was final rising in WH-question sentence type. The errors were caused by the physical impediment, inability in manipulating the pitch voice, and inability to keep the level tone stable. In addition, it was also due to the pre-service English teachers L1 mother tongue. This study gave information of pre-service English teacher ability, obstacle, and the causes of errors in producing intonation tone. It can be a reference for pre-service English teachers to look for pre-service teacher ability in mastering pronunciation especially intonation.

Abstract

At higher education institutions, hybrid learning that incorporates digital classroom and online teaching and learning activities are becoming increasingly popular norms. Throughout the academia, the usage of online discussion forums is progressively making its way into language classroom as studies have shown that it contributes to a good learning environment if efficiently used by both learners and educators. This qualitative study investigated strategies used by undergraduates as purposive samples in planning and executing ideas for a project via online discussion mode. This simple case study involved 15 second semester undergraduates taking “Professional English 1” course in Bachelor in Engineering Technology program. A focus group interview and follow-up individual interviews were used to elicit information from the undergraduates. All these were also triangulated with document analysis of their reflective notes and drafts of writing works. Several questions were asked to the undergraduates during both interviews to determine their strategies when discussing online. The findings indicate that participants have tremendously benefited from online discussions and have employed three main strategies namely 1) asking for clarification, 2) going over previous responses and 3) using free online services and websites. This study provides useful insight and increases awareness among lecturers on the online discussion strategies used by students, allowing for more successful and meaningful planning of tasks involving online discussion.
