Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to describe analytically the active religious education carried out by Muhammadiyah elements for earthquake survivors in Ahu, West Sulawesi. The research data were obtained through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document review. Design/methods/approach – All data obtained were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s paradigm combined with Von Eckarberg’s hermeneutic phenomenological analysis model. Findings – The findings and discussion of this research conclude as follows; (1)The enlightenment movement in the field of religious education for survivors in Ahu Village is an integral part of the disaster mitigation program by Muhammadiyah. MDMC volunteers implemented the program for early childhood, kindergarten, and primary education, as well as for groups of survivors from among adults. The religious education program is non-formal, and its implementation uses a contextual learning approach. (2) The religious education program for the survivors is significant, not only because of the process of transferring knowledge but also the process of mental and spiritual enlightenment for the survivors. This process enables the survivors to be more assertive and patient and can respond positively to the reality of the disaster that befell them. (3) Conceptually, the enlightenment movement through active religious education carried out by MDMC can be categorized as a disaster risk reduction effort that is non-physical and is part of the concept of disaster mitigation. Research implications/limitations – Thus, this research is expected to have implications for efforts to develop a mitigation model based on religious education for survivors. Practical implications – The entire series of religious education processes carried out by MDMC for survivors, conceptually or in scientific theory, has meaning or is very significant in shaping survivors’ mental attitudes and religiosity.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to discuss the ideological form of contemporary Islamic education in Indonesia. This study investigates the phenomenology of three Yogyakarta school institutions. Design/methods/approach – This is a qualitative study with a phenomenological pedagogical approach. This study focuses on three Islamic educational institutions in the Special Region of Yogyakarta: Madrasah Aliyah Unggulan (MAU) Al-Imdad Bantul Yogyakarta, Madrasah Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah (M3) Yogyakarta, and SMAIT Abu Bakar Yogyakarta. Purposive sampling and snowball techniques were used to select the informants. Findings – This study found that Al-Imdad Superior Madrasah Aliyah was an educational advancement from Nadlotul Ulama. The educational ideology of the Al-Imdad Superior Aliyah Madrasah is conservative-religious. Madrasah Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah is a Muhammadiyah cadre school with a fundamental conservatism ideology. SMAIT Abu Bakar has a fundamentalist-conservative ideology and a formalistic-revivalist religious attitude. Research implications/limitations – This study only looks at the ideological perspectives of Islamic educational institutions. The results of this study can be used to make recommendations to policymakers, particularly the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia, in determining the direction of future development of Islamic educational institutions. However, this study only looks at the aspect of thinking. Further research can concentrate on the managerial aspects of each Islamic educational institution. Practical implications – The results of this study shed light on the various characteristics of Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia. In theory, this research has implications for developing an Islamic thought map regarding existing Islamic educational institutions. This study also provides insight into Indonesia’s ideological diversity of Islamic educational institutions.

The lecturer profession is increasingly competitive, and the difficulty in raising the competence of lecturers who are partly in the Islamic boarding school environment determines whether Islamic tertiary institutions survive. This study examines the influence of Islamic Leadership, organizational culture, and self-efficacy on lecturer performance mediated by Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB). Design/methods/approach – This research was conducted on 202 lecturers at an Islamic religious university in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. This type of correlational research with survey techniques using the SmartPLS 3.3.7 application. Findings – From the results of the study, it was found that there was a significant influence of Islamic Leadership on OCB; there is a significant influence of organizational culture on OCB; there is a significant effect of self-efficacy on OCB; there is no significant effect of Islamic Leadership on performance; there is no significant effect of organizational culture on performance; there is a significant effect of self-efficacy on performance; there is a significant effect of OCB on performance; and there is a significant effect of Islamic Leadership, organizational culture, and self-efficacy on OCB-mediated performance. This study contributes to a new paradigm of lecturer performance: OCB as the dominant variable construct that mediates civic virtue and altruism values. Research implications/limitations – This study emphasizes that improving lecturer performance is not enough with spiritual leadership, organizational culture, and self-efficacy but assisted by organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). Practical implications – This study shows a relationship between Islamic leadership, organizational culture, self-efficacy, and OCB variables on lecturer performance and gives the importance of strengthening OCB to improve lecturer performance.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the practice of integrating education in Islamic boarding schools based on the perspective of prophetic education. Design/methods/approach – This study used a case study design and was conducted in Madrasah Tsanawiyah and Aliyah Modern Boarding School (PM) Al-Islam. Data were collected using interview observations and documentation and then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. Findings – This study’s findings show that the spirit and practice of education in Madrasah Tsanawiyah and Aliyah Al-Islam align with prophetic values by prioritizing transcendent spirituality with critical humanist principles framed in the form of institutional integration and content. Research implications/limitations – This study strengthens and complements previous research findings on integrating Islamic scholarship in Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia. However, it is also important to continue conducting similar research with a broader scope to strengthen related research findings. Practical implications – The findings of this study can be a bridge to close the dichotomous gap and balance the gap in educational orientation to achieve educational goals between religious and pragmatic educational goals.

Abstract

Purpose – The existence of Rohis in schools and madrasas is often imaged as a movement for Islamization and school da’wah. However, globalization and modernization inevitably bring new directions for the next Rohis movement and is evident in its various activism. This study aims to determine the preferences of Rohis activism in schools and madrasas that have experienced a shift from Islamism “right” towards popular culture. Design/methods/approach – This research method is a qualitative case study. The subjects of this research are Rohis activists in MAN 1 Yogyakarta and SMAN 5 Yogyakarta. This study collects data through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. Data analysis uses the Miles and Huberman model with interactive analysis through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. Findings – The results of this study indicate that the Rohis’ activism preferences appear in the spaces they create as a form of negotiation between obedience and modernity, including manifesting in the form of religious events, the theme of the study, and the name of the program/division. Research implications/limitations – The implications of this research in the world of education provide insight and views that modernization and globalization cannot be avoided, especially for Muslim youth who are members of Rohis. Practical implications – This research shows that school policies are more progressive and responsive to changing times.
