Abstract

The thesis was a pre-experimental research in form of one group pre-test post-test design conducted in one of junior high school in west borneo which consisted of 31 students’ and it was examined with cluster random sampling technique. The technique of data collection applied in this research was measurement technique. The data were collected through multiple choice test. The pre-test and post-post-test were conducted in order to collect the data from the students. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic. The research finding showed that GIST strategy was effective on reading comprehension, it was proved by the mean score during pre-test and post-test were 52, 88 and 63, 30 which meant that there were difference before and after treatment. Lastly it was proved by t-test value, sig value was smaller than α (0, 00   0, 05) which meant that Ha was accepted. The effect of the use GIST strategy was moderate effect level based on the Cohen’s effect. It was 0, 56 which meant that moderate effect to increase students’ reading comprehension.Keywords: Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST), Reading Skill, and Pre-Experimental Research.

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate the contribution of Google docs in teaching writing skill. This research reviewed the previous studies on Google docs in teaching writing skill which were published within the past ten years. This research used systematic review as the method. There were five from seventeen journals have been selected by hand searching based on inclusion exclusion criteria and fulfill the criteria from seventeen journals. Five studies were included and reviewed in terms of (i) population, (ii) comparison, (iii) outcomes, (iv) study design, (v) publication years, (vi) language. This research utilized internet searching to search the journals. To analyze the data, this research used thematic analysis as technique of analysis data. The result show that (1) Google docs helped students in writing process. (2) The successful of Google docs provided by students’ scores increased. (3) Google docs encourage students’ motivation, interest, and communication. Further, Google docs were helpful, useful, and enjoyable tool for students to improve their writing skill.    Keywords: systematic review, Google docs, writing skill.

Abstract

This study aims to develop additional teaching material for XI grade students specializing in accommodation at SMKN 5 Pontianak. The instruments used in this study were a needs analysis questionnaire and an expert evaluation questionnaire. The step is to conduct a needs analysis by distributing questionnaires to students. The results of the needs analysis flow into the development of the module. . Developing the first draft of materials, consulting the first draft of materials to the experts, and revising and developing the final draft of materials. The data analysis was quantitatively analyzed using frequency and percentage, and the data obtained from the material evaluation were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Based on expert validation, this product is considered valid for student use. In summary, Front Office learning materials for class XI students majoring in hotel accommodation at SMKN 5 Pontianak have been successfully developed and can be used as complementary materials

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate the contribution of using sparkol videoscribe media in teaching writing skill. This research reviewed the previous studies on sparkol videoscribe in teaching writing skill which were published within the past ten years. This research used systematic review as the method. The population of this research was eighteen studies, then it screened used flow charts based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. There were five studies as the sample. This research used indirect observation as a  technique and document analysis as the tools. To analyze the data, this research used thematic analysis as the technique analysis of data.  Based on the result of the review, the result indicated that (1) The use of sparkol videoscribe media helped the teacher in teaching writing skill. (2) The successful of using sparkol videoscribe media in teaching writing skill based on students’ achievement increased. (3) Sparkol videoscribe media encouraged students’ interest, motivation, activeness, and able to engage students’ attention. From the results above, the sparkol videoscribe media gave the contribution in teaching writing skill.Keywords: Systematic review, sparkol videoscribe, writing skill.

Abstract

This qualitative research was conducted in order to analyze the implementation and the evaluation of character building in English language teaching activities at one of the private Islamic school in Pontianak. The subject of this research were active students at Seventh Grade and an English teacher. The sample was selected using a purposeful sampling technique. The technique of data collection applied were documentation, observation, and interview.  Documentation was used to get data from the lesson plan. Observation was used to get data in the process of teaching and learning activities. Meanwhile, an interview to get more information about character building that was implemented in the school. The results of this research showed from 18 character values based on curriculum, the values of religious, independent, communicative, social concern, discipline, curiosity, hard work, and respect for achievement are taught by teachers through teaching English in this school. Although, there were some character values from the lesson plan that were not implemented in the classroom, but most of the character values that were not in the lesson plan are taught by the teacher.

Abstract

This research aimed to explore the implementation of ARCS Model in English as a Foreign Language that have done by the teacher and students at the eleventh grade of science students of SMA Muhammadiyah Sambas.  The research implemented a descriptive research design in qualitative method. There were 1 English teacher and 15 eleventh grade of science students participated in collecting primary data. The proposed research applied direct and indirect communication technique where utilized such tool as interview and online questionnaire (open-ended) which each consist of 10 questions. The questionnaire items were modified from Mahmudah (2016). This study used technique of analyzing the qualitative data from Ary, et al. (2010: 481). The research finding indicated that from interview, it was found that in implementing the model, in attention teacher using a variety of learning media such song, video, games and others interesting media. Teacher also use humor if it was needed. In showing relevance, teacher tried to show the relevance of the material being studied with students' needs and the benefits of learning English. Next, in improving students' confidence with their ability, teacher gave hope of success, arrange the learning process and give constructive feedback. Last in creating students' satisfied, teacher gave appreciation with verbal or non-verbal praise, provided an opportunity to showing their ability, and an opportunity to the students to help their friends. Furthermore, the research finding from questionnaire indicated that the use of ARCS Model motivational learning like humor, give the real examples, give feedback, and use praise make the students are easier to understand the lesson. It also makes students feel more motivated, comfortable, and compatible in learning. Thus, it allows the students to have full concentration on the lesson which leads to their motivationally of the learning. So students perceived ARCS Model is very useful model in creating and maintaining good interest among students that proved by students’ statement.

Abstract

This research focuses on Shifting to hybrid learning; what do rural English teachers need?, how is the learning system during hybrid learning, to illustrate the difficulties in achieving successful learning practices with limited time in several schools in Kapuas Hulu. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach. The data collection technique is direct communication. The data collection tool is an interview using an interview guide. The schools are SMAN 01, SMPN 02, and MTS Hidayatul Mustaqim Bunut Hulu. The data analysis technique is to make a transcript in the form of text from the interview results. The results of the study are, there is not much that teachers can do in the learning system during the hybrid learning period. From the results of research in 3 schools where teachers have difficulty implementing hybrid learning. Some of the problems experienced by teachers are about the learning media, the learning media used are only books / worksheets, besides that the lack of science and technology knowledge from teachers and attention from schools causes the application of hybrid learning to experience problems, especially during online learning, lack of awareness from students in utilizing hybrid applications. During the pandemic, the role of parents is very important in reminding students. Therefore, what English teachers need in the application of hybrid learning learning is English teacher training regarding learning media and other supporting facilities, collaboration between schools and parents to realize more effective hybrid learning learning, and support from the government to simplify the material. The researcher hopes that it can be a solution for the future, especially during the pandemic. In order to meet the needs of teachers in difficult times, because the needs of teachers also need attention so that practical learning can still be carried out effectively.

Abstract

The objective of this research were to find out whether there was any differences of students reading comprehension achievement before and after the implementation the treatment Index Card Match Strategy and how effective Index Card Match Strategy in reading comprehension to the Eight grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Sanggau in Academic Year of 2018/2019. The method of this research was quantitative research using experimental design. The result of the data showed the SD of pre-test (8.884) was higher than SD of post-test (7.863). It showed that the treatment was well implemented. Lastly it was proved by paired sample t-test value, the value of t-test was higher than t-table 19.165 2.064 which meant that Ha was accepted. The effect of the used Index Card Match Strategy was strong effect level based on the Cohen’s effect. Abstract

This research used pre-experimental research that wanted to know whether Climbing Grammar Mountain Games has effect to teach simple past tense to the ninth grade students of JHS 01 Mempawah Hilir in Academic Year 2019/2020. This research used cluster random sampling, the researcher used multiple choice as the tool of data collection, but before it the researcher did the try out to find out which sentences that could be used as the tool by using validity test. After getting the valid questions for pre-test and post-test, then the mean score of pre-test and post-test would be compared. The result mean score from pre-test was 45.71 and from post-test was 67.32. The calculated of t-test showed that tobtain was higher than ttable, it was 17.491.703, It means that the testing hypothesis was accepted. Also supported by the result of effect size was 3.77, it had strong effect to this research. Therefore, Climbing Grammar Mountain Game is suggested to teach simple past tense. Keywords: simple past tense, climbing grammar mountain game, experimental

Abstract

This Research aims to find out the kinds and sources of speaking anxiety of the Students of English Parit Baru Village, Sungai Raya Regency in the academic year of 2021. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. Ten students from different grades of primary school around Parit Baru village were involved in this research. This research used a semi-structured interview and field note as the tool of collection data. data collection used an observation about students’ behavior during class that direct students to become Anxiety. The result showed that the kinds of speaking anxiety of English Parit Baru Village students were trait anxiety, where several students keep silent when the tutor ask them, students incapable to express their feelings, ideas, and thought; situation-specific anxiety when the tutor ask students to speak they sometimes can do it, in other condition or topics they also incapable to speak; state anxiety, when students ask by their tutor to speak suddenly, they cannot control their nervousness. Furthermore, the sources of speaking anxiety from personal anxiety can be overcome by actively of students during learning; interpersonal anxiety students need any motivation to learn speaking skills; teacher belief about language learning can be manifest by a good impression of teacher during teaching. For classroom procedure, the class needs to be relaxed; language testing derived from fear, shame, and doubt of the students.
