Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of technology in English language learning at SMP Negeri 13 Pontianak from the perspectives of teachers and students. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing observation, semistructured interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. The research instruments included an observation sheet to record the use of technology in the classroom, interview guidelines to explore the perceptions and experiences of teachers and students, and a documentation checklist to gather relevant teaching materials and media. The participants consisted of one English teacher and five eighth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. The data collected were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis, which involves six steps: familiarizing with data, generating initial codes, searching for themes, reviewing themes, defining and naming themes, and producing the final report. The findings revealed that technology such as Kahoot, projectors, and mobile devices effectively enhanced students’ motivation, engagement, and understanding of the learning material. Both the teacher and students expressed positive attitudes toward technology integration in the classroom. However, several challenges were identified, including limited school infrastructure,  unstable internet connectivity, and varying levels of digital literacy among students. This study recommends continuous teacher training and improvements in school facilities to optimize technology-based learning. Abstract

This research aims to explore what teaching strategies used by the teachers and the role of schools to enhance English communication skills at vocational schools. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through semi-structured interview, and documents. The participant of this research are English teachers and headmaster of vocational schools at SMK Negeri 4 Pontianak, SMK Negeri 2 Pontianak, and SMK SMTI Pontianak. The interview was analyzed using thematic analysis and document as supporting the data of interview. The findings of this research indicate that teaching strategies to enhance English communication skills at vocational schools have been implemented, but their implementation has not been consistent. The findings of the study indicate that teaching strategies such as brainstorming, problem-based learning, simulation, large group discussions, role play, and presentations have been used by teachers to improve students' communication skills. However, their implementation has not been consistent across all schools. In addition, the role of schools through policies, programs, and supporting facilities is considered to be less than optimal in meeting students' English communication needs. This study emphasizes the importance of teacher readiness and the role of schools in meeting student needs, which need to be strengthened to encourage more effective and sustainable improvement in English communication skills. Therefore, it is recommended that further research examine teaching strategies that encourage active interaction and contextual communication, as well as evaluate the role of schools in designing consistent policies, programs, and supporting facilities for English communication learning. Abstract

This study aims to explore the perceptions of pre-service English teachers toward the microteaching program, focusing on its influence on their professional learning, its role in preparing them for field teaching practice, and the challenges and supports they experienced. The study employed a qualitative case study design. Eight pre-service teachers undertaking micro teaching program were purposively involved as the research participants. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and reflective journals, and analyzed using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). The findings revealed that microteaching was initially seen not only as a basic academic requirement, but also as a valuable simulation of real teaching practice. The program significantly enhanced their teaching-related skills, pedagogical knowledge, and personal growth, including of confidence, communication, classroom management, and lesson planning. Moreover, microteaching helped participants build professional readiness for their field teaching practice (PLP 2). However, some challenges such as time constraints and limited resources were also reported. To address these, participants relied on self-reflection, peer support, and guidance from supervisors. This study highlights the critical role of microteaching in bridging the gap between theory and practice in teacher education and offers insights into how the program can be improved to better support future educators. Abstract

Listening comprehension involves understanding spoken language in real time, yet it is often underemphasized in classrooms. This study examined the effectiveness of the Dictogloss technique in teaching listening comprehension among 25 tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Selakau in the 2024/2025 academic year. Using a one-group pre-test and post-test design over four sessions, data were collected through listening tests based on dialogue texts. Results showed an improvement in listening for details, with mean scores rising from 50 to 65.6 (a 31.2% increase). However, accuracy of answers declined from 44 to 36 (an 18.18% decrease). Overall, the average score increased from 47 to 50.8. Despite these changes, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test indicated no statistically significant effect (p = 0.153), and the small effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.271) suggested the Dictogloss technique had a limited impact. Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to examine whether there was a difference in students’ narrative text writing performance before and after the implementation of Picture Books as a teaching medium, and to explore the extent of that difference among tenth-grade students of TKJ 3 at SMKN 1 Nanga Pinoh during the 2025/2026 academic year. The research employed a quantitative method using a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design. The results showed that the standard deviation of the pre-test was 5.26, slightly higher than the post-test, which was 5.25. A paired sample t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores (t-obtained = 7.317; p < 0.05). Additionally, the effect size calculated using Cohen’s d was 1.29, indicating a strong magnitude of difference. While the findings suggest a potential association between the use of Picture Books and improved narrative writing performance, they should be interpreted with caution due to the absence of a control group. The results are indicative, not conclusive, regarding instructional effectiveness.   Keyword: Picture Books, Writing Skills, Narrative Text,Pre-Experimental Research

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the relationship between Foreign Language Enjoyment (FLE) and social interaction among Indonesian undergraduate students in English-speaking classes. It also explores whether the duration of learning English affects students’ level of social interaction. The study employs a quantitative descriptive design using a Likert-scale questionnaire adapted from the Foreign Language Enjoyment Scale by Dewaele and MacIntyre (2014). Data were collected from 91 English Education students from various universities in Indonesia. The findings reveal that students generally experience moderate to high levels of FLE, particularly when the classroom environment is supportive and interactive. Pearson correlation analysis shows a positive and significant relationship between FLE and social interaction, indicating that students who enjoy learning English are more likely to participate actively in class. However, regression analysis reveals that the duration of English learning does not significantly influence students’ social interaction. These results suggest that emotional and social classroom factors, such as teacher support, peer collaboration, and classroom engagement, play a more influential role in encouraging interaction than the number of years spent studying English. The study supports the socio-constructivist theory, which emphasizes the importance of meaningful communication and a positive learning environment in foreign language learning.
