Abstract

This classroom-based study investigates how structured multimodal writing tasks can support beginner learners of Chinese. Four tasks—vocabulary matching, image-supported sentence writing, gap-fill completion, and sentence reordering—were designed to gradually increase cognitive load and reduce external support. Ten first-year undergraduates completed these tasks at the end of a semester-long Chinese elective. Data sources included written outputs, Padlet logs, student reflections, and interviews. Tasks that combined visual cues with sentence-level scaffolds led to more confident and accurate writing. In contrast, grammar-heavy tasks with minimal support resulted in lower accuracy and increased cognitive overload. Drawing on cognitive load theory and dual coding theory, the study proposes a three-phase model: perceptual support, linguistic scaffolding, and output assessment. A rubric assessing language accuracy, content coherence, and peer interaction demonstrated strong inter-rater reliability (κ = .82). The findings offer practical insights into how multimodal tools can be used to scaffold sentence-level writing and provide low-tech assessment alternatives for under-resourced classrooms. The model can be adapted across various proficiency levels and teaching contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the types of translation meaning shifts and the forms of meaning shifts that dominate in the film The Captain 中国机长 (2019). Meaning shifts occur due to cultural differences, language conventions, or social contexts between Mandarin and Indonesian. The research method used was qualitative analysis involving data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data was taken from the film's subtitles and analysed using M.D.S. Simatupang's theory of meaning shifts, including generic to specific shifts, specific to generic shifts, and cultural differences. The results of the study show that meaning shifts caused by cultural differences dominate over shifts from generic to specific and specific to generic, with eight data points out of a total of 16 analysed. The researcher hopes that this study can help translators, especially those in translation classes, to gain a deeper understanding of translation theory, types of meaning shifts in different contexts, and expand their vocabulary and knowledge of culture so that they can produce more in-depth analysis.

Abstract

This research on the use of the “HSK EXAM-汉语水平考试” application in the HSK 4 Preparation course aims to understand the usage activities of the “HSK EXAM-汉语水平考试” application within the HSK 4 Preparation Course and students’ response to this application in the HSK 4 Preparation Course of the Mandarin Language Education Program 2022. The descriptive qualitative approach is the type of the research used in this study, utilizing the data analysis framework developed by Miles dan Huberman. The study acknowledges that the application received positive feedback from students. Mandarin language learners find the application very useful as it provides various HSK question sets and vocabulary. The research findings indicate that the application has the potential to be effective supplementary tool for the HSK 4 Preparation Course and offers valuable insights for the future development of technology-based Mandarin language teaching methods.

Abstract

The dynamics of the educational transition from online to offline learning continue to be a topic of discussion to this day. The educational conditions affected by the pandemic were experienced not only by students but also by teachers and schools from both social and emotional perspectives. The purpose of this study is to examine the implementation of hybrid learning during the COVID-19 pandemic and offline learning in the post-pandemic period, as well as to analyze the impact of the transition from online to offline learning after the pandemic. This study employed a qualitative descriptive research method. The data sources consisted of both primary and secondary data. The Miles and Huberman model was used as the data analysis technique in this research on learning transition. The study was conducted in Class XI Social Science 5 at SMAN 6 Malang, particularly in the Mandarin language class. The findings revealed that hybrid learning was carried out by combining online and offline systems simultaneously, emphasizing the use of a web-based Learning Management System (LMS) as a platform for documentation and distribution of educational content in schools. The transition from online to offline learning indicated a balanced level of self-efficacy among students. This outcome is categorized as positive, as students were able to manage their strengths and weaknesses effectively in completing school assignments.
