Abstract

Principally this research attempts to find out 1) the types of courage by Mulan's character in Mulan (2020) movie. 2) how Mulan character™s courage showed in the movie. 3) factors that encouraged Mulan™s courage in the Movie. The research is done by descriptive qualitative research with the data source is the movie text script and scenes of Mulan (2020) movie. The instrument of collecting data is documentary sheet and images. The research results show that 1) There were 26 courages in the category types of courage. There are six courage categories, namely physical courage (15.39%), emotional courage (26.93%), intelectual courage (11.54%), social courage (15.39%), moral courage (23.08%), and spiritual courage (7.7%). 2) There are four the ways how the courage showed by Mulan character namely determination, self confidence, consistency, and optimism. 3) There are three factors that encouraged Mulan's character's namely altruism, self confident and situational demands, emotional and cognitive resources.

Abstract

This study is about discusses semiotic meaning of the characterizations in SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run (2020) using Roland Barthes' theory. The data was taken from screenshots of the characters that contained semiotic meaning. The researcher found 64 pictures that have been analyzed there were 10 data from SpongeBob, 9 data from Patrick, 8 data from Mr.Krabs, 8 data from Squidward, 6 data from Plankton, 6 data from Sandy, 4 data from Gary, 7 data from King Poseidon, 4 data from Sage and 2 data from Otto. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The results of this study state that the type of semiotics by Barthes can be used to explain the characters meaning of semiotics contained in it. The type of Barthes Semiotics in this film also has different meanings in describing something according to the action or behavior contained in the film scene.

Abstract

The goal of this study is to identify the types and purposes of sarcasm obtained from the characters in the Mel Gibson film Hacksaw Ridge. specifically found twelve characters whose words often contain sarcastic remarks in the film. This study uses qualitative research to explain linguistic information on the use and varieties of sarcastic language in the Mel Gibson film Hacksaw Ridge. The dialogue in the movie Hacksaw Ridge served as the study data source. By using the theories of Keraf (1999) to examine the function of sarcasm and Elizabeth Camp (2011) to examine the form of sarcasm, the equivalent technique was applied to the examined data. According to the results, propositional sarcasm, which has 12 utterances (24%), is the most common type of sarcasm, followed by like prefix sarcasm, which has 16 utterances (32%), illocutianary sarcasm, which has 11 utterances (24%), and lexical sarcasm, which has 11 utterances (20%). From the result it was found the most dominant one is Like Prefix Sarcasm. And finally sarcasm was used in the film becaus it is a war movie, the movie has a high emotional intensity, which leads to some sarcastic or angry statements.

Abstract

This study is concerned with Psychological conflicts experienced by the main character in Sam Levinson's movie series "Euphoria." This study used descriptive qualitative to explore the kinds of psychological conflicts experienced by the main character in Euphoria. This study used Sigmund Freud™s (1923) psychoanalysis theory to examined the data in this study. The results of the data were found that (1) There were three kinds of psychological conflict experienced by the main character, namely Id, Ego, and Superego. (2) There were three factors that caused psychological conflict, namely losing the father, mis understanding, and uncomfortable situations. (3) There were four ways how the main character overcame the psychological conflict such as, sublimation, repression, and denial. In conclusion, the dominant psychological conflict experienced by the main character is the Id aspect.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were 1) to investigate the pattern of stereotype analysis appeared in Passing movie, 2) to describe characters response the stereotypes that is aimed at them in the movie Passing, 3) to explain the reason characters in Passing movie confront stereotypes instead of conforming. The data in this study are taken from sentences in dialog and scripts contained in the film Passing. 1) There were three types of stereotype patterns according to Brand and Reyna's (2011) theory depicted in the movie Passing. The three types are: Internal/controllable/stable (63.20%) followed by, Internal/uncontrollable/stable (25.50%), and External/uncontrollable/stable (11.3%). 2) The types of resistance reflected in the movie Passing based on King's (2010) theory are Acquiescence (35.71%) followed by Violence (35.71%), and Non-Violence (28.57%). 3) There were three reasons why Black individuals accept stereotypes instead of conforming, based on King's (2010) theory. The first reason is the fear of retaliation, which can lead to conflict. The second reason is a lack of educational awareness, which suggests that white individuals tend to have a broader perspective compared to black people. The third reason is the lack of resources in terms of legal support and financial stability.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of taboo and swear words and analyze their realization by the main characters in the Heartbreak High Series. This study utilizes a descriptive qualitative method, extracting data from the series, in the form of utterances, dialogues, and conversations that contain taboo and swear words. The findings revealed that four types of taboo words found in the Heartbreak High series realized by the main characters: lavatory (28%), private parts of the body (11%), religion (9%), sexual activity (43%), with an additional (9%) that does not align with Swan™s theory (1995). Additionally, this study categorizes swear words in the series into two categories. First are strong swear words, and second is weak swear words. Strong swear words consist of exclamations of annoyance (17%), exclamations of surprise (8%), exclamations of unconcern (2%), insults (33%), insulting request to go away (9%), emphasize an emotion (25%), surprise question (5%) and violent refusal/rejection (1%). Weak swear words consist of exclamations of annoyance (18%), exclamations of surprise (46%), and exclamations of emotion (36%). The emotional conditions of the main characters while using the swear words are joy, surprise, sadness, anger, fear, and hatred.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigated the students' difficulties in translating idiomatic expressions in English narrative text and discovered its causes. The descriptive qualitative research design with research instruments in the form of questionnaires and interview guides was employed in this study. The source of data from this study was 33 students from the class XI IPA 1 of SMA Kartika I-2 Medan. This study found that the difficulties that arise when students translate narrative texts with idiom expressions in them are; (1) No equivalents in the TL for idiomatic expressions in the SL, (2) The context of idioms in SL and TL are different, (3) Idioms appear as its literal and idiomatic senses, and (4) The convention differences of using idioms in writing discourse. This difficulty was felt by 29 of the 33 students in the classroom. In addition, during the translation process, it was found that students can felt more than one form of difficulty when translating a narrative text. Then, this study also found that the most frequent reasons for this difficulty factor are students who do not understand what English idioms really are and also the difficulty of distinguishing English idioms from other sentences that are not idiomatic expressions.

Abstract

This research aimed to develop a Word Wall Game Worksheet in reading narrative text for tenth-grade students. The research method used the Research and Development (R&D) design from Borg and Gall (2003) with six steps, namely Gathering Data and Information, Need Analysis, Product Design, Validation to Experts, Revising Products, and Final Products. The research subjects consisted of 34 students in class X-11 and one English Teacher at SMA Negeri 3 Medan. The data collection techniques included interviews and questionnaires. The data analysis techniques included Organizing and preparing data for analysis, investigating the data, Coding, Interpretation, Confirmation, and the Last step to write an inclusive description of the resulting analysis. The result of the study showed that the development of the Word Wall Game Worksheet  was  suitable and  approved  for use by  tenth-grade students  in  reading narrative text provided by the scores validation of the products given by the experts from the lecturer was 91% and the teacher was 90%. The final products were in the form of a Word Wall Game Worksheet integrated with the wordwall.net platform and the learning material was in the form of a handbook.

Abstract

This study deals with feminism in patriarchal society based on the main character in anthology of short story named Sabrina & Corina by Kali Fajardo-Anstine. This research used qualitative descriptive as the method. The data of this study were dialogue and narratives that appeared in the story. The data was analyzed using Hannam™s (2007) theory. It was found that there are three definition of feminism found in the data, they are: 1) Recognition of imbalance power" found 11 data; 2) women's condition is a social construct found 8 data; 3) emphasizes women's autonomy found 5 data. From the data found, it can be seen that recognition of imbalance power is the definition of feminism that is most often found in these short stories. It shows that there is indeed a big difference in power and authority between men and women. The main characters in these stories also try to help, protect, and support other woman as their way to fight the patriarchy that already ingrained in society.

Abstract

This study aims to interpret racial discrimination in Langston Hughes' poems i.e., I Too Sing America, Negro, and Let America Be America Again. Langston Hughes, as a writer, has faced direct discrimination from white people in his literary work. Many of Langston Hughes's works of poetry tell the story of African Americans who lived as black people and faced discrimination throughout history. Some of his poetry depicts the racial, cultural, and educational discrimination that black people face. The data taken from the poem comes from Langston Hughes' poems including I Too Sing America, Negro, and Let America Be America Again. This study applies the descriptive qualitative method as well as the extrinsic approach. Extrinsic approach, aligned with mimetic and pragmatic approaches. I Too Sing America depicts the oppression of black people through slavery, denial of rights, and inequality. Let America Be America Again depicts a focus on the idea of the American dream and how, for many people, achieving freedom, equality, and happiness, which the dream embodies, is nearly impossible. Negro depicts people of African American descent have the status of slaves. The conclusion is that the author accepts a great deal of discrimination as an African American and rejects differences in skin color status.
