Abstract

This study delves into the multifaceted nature of language anxiety among Indonesian EFL learners, focusing on the intricate interplay of individual, classroom, and socio-cultural factors. Employing a mixed-method approach, data were gathered through comprehensive surveys and in-depth interviews with students from various educational backgrounds. The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) by Horwitz et al., (1986) was utilized alongside thematic analysis to identify key anxiety-inducing elements. The findings reveal that individual factors, such as self-esteem, fear of negative evaluation, and previous language learning experiences, significantly impact learners’ anxiety levels. The classroom environment, particularly the quality of teacher-student interactions, peer relationships, and teaching methods, also emerged as critical in shaping language anxiety. Furthermore, socio-cultural influences, including societal expectations, language-related stigma, and the perceived status of the English language in Indonesia, were found to intensify anxiety. This study underscores the necessity of fostering supportive and inclusive learning environments to mitigate anxiety and facilitate effective language acquisition. Ethical considerations were rigorously adhered to, ensuring participant anonymity and confidentiality. These insights offer valuable implications for educators and policymakers in crafting targeted interventions to address language anxiety.

Abstract

The present study scrutinises the depictions of feminism in Barbie’s teasers and trailers, which breaks through the perspective of three meta-functions which are representation, interaction, and composition. The grammar of visual design (GVD) of Kress and Van Leeuwen (2021) is employed as the theoretical framework of the study. Secondary data are drawn on the YouTube channel of Warner Bros. Pictures for being applied to inclusion and exclusion criteria to qualify for the feminism features. A total of 43 frames from 7 selected videos are gathered to reveal that feminism is depicted in teasers and trailers of Barbie. Through narrative representation possessed by all the collected frames, women’s empowerment followed by the physique of beauty are the dominant features of feminism in teasers and trailers of Barbie 2023. The three meta-functions that are employed to explore how Barbie teasers and trailers convey the tropes of feminism are discussed. Through discourse intermediation (Fowler & Mountz, 2024), which in this context is the discourse of feminism, the current study constitutes a miniscule endeavor to equip educators and academics by applying language skills and attitudes to facilitate inclusive opportunities.

Abstract

The tourism industry requires every worker to have proficient English skills appropriate to their position. However, until now, tourism industry stakeholders still question the low communicative skills of tourism vocational school graduates in English. The study aims to critically evaluate the English language teaching materials used in tourism vocational high schools to analyze their suitability to student needs and the demands of the tourism industry. Using a retrospective evaluation methodology, data was carefully collected through documentation and interviews. Documentation is carried out to collect teaching materials used by schools, while interviews collect data regarding teachers' perceptions of these teaching materials. Qualitative data analysis was carried out using an interactive data analysis model. This research shows that although the material provided aligns with the national curriculum and focuses on everyday English communicative skills, the material still does not meet the particular needs of students preparing themselves for a career in the tourism sector. Teachers are aware of the significant gap between the general English skills taught and the specific English required of students. This study provides a basis for revising teaching materials to bridge this gap and ensure that they meet both general educational goals and the specific communicative demands of the tourism industry.

Abstract

Media reports on recent attacks by Sumatran tigers in February and March 2024 have framed the man-tiger relationship as being one of conflict. Implicit in this reporting are on the one hand, the threat to the villagers who live proximate to parks and on the other hand, preserving an endangered animal. It has led to officials paradoxically setting traps for tigers in the sanctuary set aside for its preservation. Putu Fajar Arcana (2024), in reference to this conflict examines this relationship from different perspectives. He observes that man’s relationship with the tiger has been shaped by earlier belief systems; one that has venerated the tiger. He observes this tiger-man relationship in literary works which portray man’s tiger-like savagery and moral baseness and the tiger also seeking revenge against humans. To date little research has been undertaken on this man and tiger representation in contemporary Indonesian literature. This research has a compelling context, the Sumatran tigers is a critically endangered animal. The aim of this paper is to examines the representation of the tiger-man relationship in contemporary Indonesian literature over the New Order and post-New Order periods. It draws on the theory of narratology and selects literary works (short stories) from the New Order period and post-New Order periods. It examines the man and tiger relationship from the perspectives of beliefs, economic development and the environment over two political periods: the New Order and post-New Order periods. It finds that in literary works man’s economic activities depict a subjugation of myths and beliefs shaping values of respect and conservation of the tiger and its habitat.

Abstract

This study addresses the critical need for character-based English reading materials tailored to the unique educational context of Integrated Islamic Junior High Schools (SMPIT). SMPIT's distinct curriculum incorporates the 10-Muwashafat character foundation, which aligns with broader national values encapsulated in the Pancasila student profile. Despite the importance of these character values, existing English reading materials often fail to adequately integrate them, posing a challenge for effective character education. This research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining Research and Development (R&D) methodology to develop a model of reading materials that integrates the 10 Muwashafat characters and the Pancasila student profile, aimed at supporting character formation in English language learning at SMPIT. Additionally, an experimental method is utilized to assess the model's effectiveness. Through the mixed-methods design, the study conducted an in-depth analysis of current learning materials to identify gaps in the integration of character values. Data were collected using interviews, observations, tests, and questionnaires, involving teachers, students, and education experts. Based on these findings, a new model of reading materials was designed, integrating both 10 Muwashafat and Pancasila values. The model underwent expert validation and field testing at SMPIT, followed by revisions to enhance its effectiveness based on the results. The results demonstrate that the developed reading materials significantly improve the integration of character education in English learning, aligning with the school's values and supporting students' holistic development. This study contributes to the field of educational material development by providing a framework for incorporating character education into language learning, addressing both religious and national educational goals.

Abstract

The traditional marriage ritual of Nika Ro Neku is one of the cultural heritages of the Bima community that is rich in symbolic, social, and spiritual meaning. In the digital age, this ritual has been documented and disseminated through online media, causing changes in its practice and linguistic structure. Social media, video recordings, and online communication have led to changes in the structure of speech, the roles of participants, and the social meanings contained within. This study aims to analyze the transformation of language and the roles of participants in the ritual using Alessandro Duranti's anthropological linguistic approach, particularly the concepts of indexicality, performance, and participation. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach based on digital ethnography, with data consisting of speech excerpts from YouTube videos and online interviews. The results show that the performative dimension in ritual speech is the most dominant aspect, where speech not only conveys information but also shapes social realities such as blessings, acceptance, and collective identity. Digital transformation has led to the reinterpretation of social indices, a shift in performativity toward visual content, and the expansion of participants' roles from local communities to a global audience. This study demonstrates that digital documentation does not erase cultural meaning but rather reformulates it within a new media context.

Abstract

This study explores English teachers’ conceptions of assessment and the influence of contextual factors operating at the classroom levels within the Indonesian secondary education system. A representative survey was conducted among 236 English teachers from public and private secondary schools across Central Java, Indonesia. The findings reveal that teachers predominantly endorse assessment for purposes of student improvement, student accountability, and school accountability, while comparatively fewer teachers view assessment as irrelevant. Although many respondents express confidence in their assessment knowledge and perceived competence, concerns persist regarding the degree of professional trust they receive particularly in relation to assessment decision-making at both school and policy levels. To further explore underlying patterns, a latent class analysis (LCA) was conducted based on English teachers' responses to the “assessment as irrelevant” dimension. The analysis identified distinct groups of teachers, with those expressing higher levels of assessment irrelevance found across all schools and subject areas. These teachers tended to report lower confidence in assessment preparation, perceived less support from their institutions, and placed reduced value on academic achievement within societal contexts. The results underscore the complexity of teacher belief systems and the interplay of contextual forces shaping conceptions of assessment in Indonesia. Implications are discussed for assessment policy, school leadership, and professional development aimed at strengthening assessment literacy among English language teachers.

Abstract

Coherence is one of the indicators of good writing, especially in high-stakes proficiency tests, like IELTS. Very few studies have been conducted on the thematic progression of IELTS writing, especially to compare the quality of the essays across different bands. This study aims to explore the thematic progressions employed in IELTS Writing band 2 essays, from bands 4 – 9. By doing quantitative and qualitative text analysis on 30 argumentative essays, which responded to the same prompt, the thematic progressions and thematic breaks were analyzed. The study revealed that all types of thematic progressions are employed by the essays from different bands, with different portions, while breaks mostly occur at low-band essays. This confirms the importance of incorporating thematic progressions in writing instructions, so student learn that they need to plan their writing structure to make is more persuasive.

Abstract

This study examines the extent to which journalistic objectivity is maintained or nuanced in Polly Toynbee’s article on teenage pregnancy, published by The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com, accessed July 2025). Employing Martin and White’s (2005) Appraisal Framework, the analysis focuses on two key subsystems: Judgment (evaluations of people’s behavior, ethics, and capacity) and Engagement (how other perspectives are acknowledged or suppressed). The study adopts a qualitative content analysis approach with manual coding of appraisal instances, supported by frequency counts to quantify evaluative patterns. The findings revealed that the discourse surrounding teenage pregnancy is far from neutral. A total of 29 Judgement Attitude instances were identified. Of these findings, 64.29% (18 instances) were negative propriety judgments, often directed at the Conservative Party, portraying them as morally neglectful, indifferent, or even hostile to the needs of socially disadvantaged communities. On the other hand, positive judgment (17%) was associated with the New Labour government, and acknowledging the eagerness of a head of social unit. These are linguistically framed as responsible, evidence-based, and socially just, reinforcing a moral contrast between political ideologies. In terms of Engagement, 99 instances were noted. A significant 62.62% (62 instances) were monoglossic or contractive, indicating that Toynbee frequently limits alternative perspectives. The remaining 37.37% (37 instances) of dialogic expansion appear mainly in rhetorical constructions or hypothetical examples, such as imagining how disadvantaged girls perceive their futures. This heavy reliance on negative judgment and contracted engagement suggests that Toynbee uses journalistic discourse not merely to report on teenage pregnancy, but to frame it as a socio-political issue rooted in inequality, institutional failure, and class-based neglect. Overall, the findings show that Toynbee’s discourse, while seemingly objective, is deeply infused with evaluative meaning. This reveals how journalistic texts, particularly those addressing complex social issues like teenage pregnancy, function as sites of ideological negotiation, shaping public attitudes through both explicit judgment and subtle engagement.
