Abstract

This study was aimed at estimating true metabolizable energy (TME) and crude protein (CP) intake of Kerinci Duck reared under scavenging system in Kerinci District, Province of Jambi. Twovillages (Koto Majidin [KM] and Semerap [SP]) were selected for the study where ducks were the most common livestock kept by farmers. Koto Majidin was located deed in the land, whereas Semerap was close to a natural lake. Geographically, these villages had the same climate and constituted paddyproducingareas where at the time of the study, these locations were inharvesting season. Five mature 7 to 9-month old ducks (1 male and 4 females) were selected from each location and killed late afternoon after being scavenged for 9.0 (KM) to 11.5 hours (Semerap) for gizzard sampling. The results showedthat based on proximate analysis of gizzard contents and corrections made on scavenging time, TME intake by ducks in KM was not different from that in SP (618 vs. 996 kcal/kg), but CP intake was less in KM (3.90 vs. 7.28; P ≤ 0.01). Relative weights of gizzards of ducks were comparable in the twolocations. Thus, difference in body weight (1,352 [KM] vs. 1,579 kg [SP]; P ≤ 0.01) was likely in part influenced by different absolute weight of gizzard (55.6 vs. 78.0 g; P ≤ 0.01) and its contents (10.60 vs. 18.03 g; P ≤ 0.01). Scavenged feeds, which were similar in both locations, composed of grits, paddy, snails, and other unidentified ingredients. This study suggested that ducks scavenged feed in KM and SP had not got sufficient energy and protein for optimum production. Under the presencecircumstances, at least additional 20 g of feed composing of energy and protein source is required to meetnutrient requirements of a duck.

Abstract

The experiment was conducted to know the effect of elephan grass substitution with kumpai grass according to dry matter, organic matter digestibility and water consumption of  local young male lamb. Three local young male lamb post weaning with body weight 5 kg, 6,5 kg and 7,5 kg respectively were arrange to latin square design experiment. The treatments were R0 94 % elephan grass, R1 94 % fresh kumpai grass and R2 94 % kumpai grass hay and  6 % of rice bran was also added to each treatment. The result showed that the substitution of elephan grass with fresh kumpai grass did not affect thedigestibility of dry matter or organic matter. Meanwhile the water consumption was significantly higher for third treatment compared to the other treatments. From the result we can conclude that the quality of fresh kumpai grass and elephan grass was approximately equal according to dray matter and organic matter digestibility, but water consumption was affected by the water persentage in ration.

Abstract

The present study was conducted to determine the effect of pearl grass (Hedyotis corymbosa) supplementation into the ration on the broiler performance. The study was carried out in the cages under Laboratory of Poultry and Non Ruminant Nutrition and Laboratory of Feed Science, Department ofAnimal Nutrition and Feed Science, Faculty of Animal Science, University of Jambi for 5 months. The study used 2-day of broiler chicken strain MB 202 which fed basal ration. The basal ration contained yellow maize, rice bran, fish meal, soybean meal, Top mix, mineral mix, coconut meal and calciumdiphosphat. The study was assigned by Completely Randomized Design into 5 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments were level of pearl grass supplementation into the ration, namely: M0 (100% basal ration contained 0% pearl grass, as control), M1 (100% basal ration contained 0,2% pearl grass),M2 (100% basal ration contained 0,4% pearl grass), M3 (100% basal ration contained 0,6% pearl grass) and M4 (100% basal ration contained 0,8% pearl grass). Parameters measured were feed intake, daily weight gain, feed conversion ratio, live weight, carcass weight and carcass percentage. Data wereanalyzed by analysis of variance and the significant effects were analyzed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DRMT). Result of this study showed that there was a significantly (P<0,05) decreased on feed intake by pearl grass supplementations. However, pearl grass supplementation had no significantly (P>0,05) affected daily weight gain and feed conversion ratio. It is concluded that pearl grass supplementation into the broiler ration could be implemented up to 0.8% without any affecting on broilerperformance.

Abstract

This research was conducted at the Laboratory of Livestock Production Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Jambi University in 2008.  The research aimed to find out the muscle type and the effect  of storage of beef quality.  Research was arranged in Randomized Block Design with three replications comprising a factorial combination of two muscle type (Longissimus Dorsi/LD, Bicepps Femoris/BF), and four level of storage duration (P3/3 days, P6/6 day,P9/9 days and P12/12 days). Data of lost weight, the number of droplets (drip,) meat pH and mature lost was taken. The results showed that there was no interaction between the type of muscle with a long storage. Muscle type did not significantly affected (P> 0.05) lost weight, drip, and pH.  Storage duration had significant effect (P <0.01) to lost weight and drip, but had no effect (P> 0.05) to mature weight on meat pH.  Based on Duncan's test, the lost weight of the P12> Q9> P3> P6.  For the amount of drip in treatment P12> Q9 = P3> P6. The conclusion of this study that the type of muscle did not affect the quality of meat, but longer storage affected thequality of the meat on the weight decrease in the number of droplets (drip).  Storage meat for 6 days (P6)had a good meat quality.
